24.01.2022 A wonderful cool climate Victorian Shiraz from Knight's Granite Hills - Macedon Ranges - 2013 vintage. The vineyard and winery are perched at an impressive 550 metres above sea level, on the original 'Bourke and Wills Track' at Baynton - Macedon Ranges. I stumbled upon a "Greek lamb chop thing" by John Lethlean on Instagram. For my first attempt - I was very happy with the results. The wine worked really well with this fabulous 'easy cook' meal. Thanks John!... 2013 was a warm vintage - so there is less of the cool climate peppery note for which the wine is well known. Lovely medium bodied wine - with a softness from bottle age. Enough natural acidity and soft tannins to compliment the meal magnificently. This dish was so delicious - it be on my high rotation list. The wine - not so much - as it was my last bottle! 22.01.2022 It was wonderful to drop in for a visit to say g'day to my friends at Warramunda Estate last week. I was really looking forward to tasting the new addition to the range - Liv Zak Malbec. Delicious wine - with that wonderful medium bodied refreshment found in the better examples of Malbec from Mendoza - Argentina. Bright, red fruit driven, with a hint of tobacco and coffee on the back palate. What a fantastic wine for the warmer weather. ... The generous family at Warramunda often break out the Manchego cheese - always a treat - especially with the Liv Zak Malbec! 18.01.2022 We enjoyed an inspired dinner last Saturday evening at 'The Stables' - Yarra Valley. Considered one of the oldest buildings in Victoria - The magnificently refurbed Stables gives you a feeling of a big step back in time. Having booked the evening for a July 'significant birthday' - we were delighted that we could finally use our package of a night at the Farm House and dinner at The Stables. The Spring Dinner Tasting Menu comprised 9 diverse and delicious tasting samples. ...Some of the elements among the beautifully presented dishes included smoked pumpkin, asparagus, Chevre, sardines, ham hock, pork belly and miso. What wine could we order to accompany such a vast range of tastes and textures? I am pleased to let you know that the wonderful Gembrook Hills 2017 Pinot Noir was a fitting foil for the disparate elements included in the dinner. The house style of the very cool climate Gembrook Hills is always understated and elegant. I selected the 2019 vintage - as it was printed on the wine list. 15.01.2022 In celebration of International Pinot Noir Day yesterday - I opened a 375 ml bottle of Kooyong Estate Pinot 2016. What a lovely wine. A delicious background of cherry and gentle black pepper notes.Medium bodied and seamless on the palate.Soft tannins with well integrated acidity keeping it nice and fresh. It slowly unfolds on the back palate. No oaky protrusions. Unlike most heavier reds - this wine worked beautifully with my 'home alone' left over roast chicken and veggies. ... 06.01.2022 Oakridge 'Local Vineyards Series' Lusatia Park - Yarra Yalley Chardonnay - 2015. Located on red volcanic soils in Worri Yallock, Lustasia Park is recognized as one of the great vineyard sites in the Upper Yarra Valley for Chardonnay. Sadly, this is one of the last vintages of this gorgeous wine by Oakridge - as the vineyards have been recently purchased by De Bortoli Wines. Vibrant, freshly picked nectarine with a backdrop of quality French oak - there are complex yeasty / le...esy notes from natural fermentation and time on the yeast lees. As with all wines made by David Bicknell, there is ample natural acidity - cutting through any oiliness or fattiness in the food. It also happily helps the wine age for many a long year. We enjoyed this wine with terriaki chicken ribs and fresh local asparagus as entree. It also matched admirably with roast pork & vegetables As an alternative to apple sauce - we went with pears poached in red wine and star anice. 06.01.2022 Great to be able to visit PDT friends again in the Yarra Valley - now that the 25km travel restriction has been lifted. I was delighted to visit the picturesque Greenstone Vineyards in Yarra Glen - to finalize a Perfect Day Tour for a group of 10 celebrating 2 birthdays next Saturday. I am really looking forward to it - as due to the restrictions - it our first tour since June! I was fortunate to taste the Greenstone Sangiovese - 2016.... With fruit sourced from the Greenstone Heathcote Vineyards, the nose shows varietal earthy, dusty and violet notes. The palate boasts a ripe burst of cherry and raspberry. Older oak barrels allow the fruit to be expressive. Fine tannins and fresh acidity to finish. Mmmm. 02.01.2022 For the first time in many months - we were able to visit some of the wineries / cellar doors in the Yarra Valley. On a whim - I suggested to my wife to visit Helen's Hill for a tasting and a bite to eat. We were delighted that they offered a range of fantastic food to match the wines. Tasty Gluten Free and Vegan options are also offered. We were more than happy with our G.F - dukkah spiced smoked chicken & mozzarella pizza. Crispy and pliable base. I need the recipe! Hele...n's Hill are fortunate to have a large outdoor deck - which serves them well in such troubled times. This photo is of the Ingram Road single vineyard pinot noir - 2019. Now it is true that I haven't been out and about for a while - but I found this wine to be amazing value for around $22 per bottle! I am looking forward to taking my friends and family, as well as my happy costumers to visit Helen's Hill in the beautiful Yarra Valley. Covid 19 Safety Protocols - 10 out of 10! Every staff member was wearing a mask appropriately - not on their chin! Hand sanitation was in ample supply. We were also required to log our details upon being seated for our tasting/ meal. This is the Quealy flagship - with only 17 precious rows across 3 acres on the Quealy Estate being used for this wine. Very pretty musk stick aromas, with violets and raspberry. Elegant and poised. Very complimentary with the Chinese style duck and mushroom dish in the photo. ...
