01.01.2022 ST STEPHEN’S PARISH BULLETIN MT. TYSON / PITTSWORTH/SOUTHBROOK Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time/A FATHER THOMAS 25 YEARS IN AUSTRALIA... On 16th June 1995, Father Thomas Areekuzhy arrived to begin his mission in Australia. His first appointment was on 4th September to St. Theresa’s Parish Toowoomba where he remained until he took up the position of Associate Pastor at St. Patricks Cathedral on 1st February 1997 and was Relief Chaplin at the Toowoomba Hospital. Two years later, 2nd February 1999, Fr. Thomas was appointed as Priest Director and visiting Priest for Sacred Heart Parish Cambooya and St. Joseph’s Parish Greenmount. On 12th February 2000 Sts’ James and John Clifton and St. Matthew’s Leyburn were added to his list of parishes and he them moved into the Catholic Presbytery in Clifton. In 2010 Priest Director St. Patricks Parish Allora was also added to his duty list. On 30th April 2011, Father Thomas was appointed Parish Priest to St. Monica’s, Oakey including Our Lady of the Annunciation, Peranga and Priest Director to: St. Stephen’s Parish Pittsworth, St. Brigid’s Southbrook, Mary Immaculate, Mt. Tyson, St. Francis De Sales, Millmerran and Our Lady of Lourdes, Cecil Plains. Father Thomas took up residence at St. Stephen’s Presbytery Pittsworth after some time living in Oakey as he found it to be more central for travelling across such a wide area and covering so many kilometres in short periods of time. He currently Ministers to three parishes, seven churches, three schools and three nursing homes as well as an extensive Indian community. Father tries to travel back to India at least annually to visit his family. These reunions are generally celebrations of baptism, weddings and family and friends gathering. A highlight of Father’s career was in 2019 he was given the opportunity to con-celebrated Mass with Holy Father - Pope Francis when he was visiting Abu Dhabi on 5th February. After the Mass, the Pope met all the priests who con-celebrated with him and gave a papal blessing. The Holy Mass celebrated by Pope Francis on Tuesday 5th February 2019 was very special. Pope Francis set a number of benchmarks simultaneously by holding the large Mass in Sheikh Zayed Stadium in the capital city of the Emirates. For the first time ever, a Catholic Church leader celebrated Holy Mass in the heartland of Islam, only a few hundred kilometres from Mecca. And it was not just any Mass, but the largest service ever to be celebrated on the Arab Peninsula. More than 160 000 Christians gathered in and around the stadium on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi. In a country where Islam is the official state religion, Christians may celebrate divine services within the confines of a church. Church bells and crosses that are visible from the outside are not permitted. However, the celebration of Holy Mass in a state-owned building, broadcast on television, attended by members of the government most significant. A gigantic cross hung resplendent over the altar. The crowd applauded when Bishop Paul Hinder, Bishop of Abu Dhabi, thanked the crown prince of the Emirates for the opportunity to celebrate Mass in a public setting. Thousands of Muslims were present when Pope Francis delivered a homily about the Sermon on the Mount as a roadmap for Christian life. A most memorable time in Father Thomas’ career. Parishioners in Pittsworth, Millmerran and Oakey congratulate and thank Father Thomas for his ministry over 25 years and wish him good health and many more years in God’s service.
