24.01.2022 WISHING TREE APPEAL Whilst it may be a fun and festive season for some, sadly there are other animals that aren't so lucky so this year SGAH is helping support Country Companion Animal Rescue (CCAR). Simply donate an item from their Wishlist below (or one of each if you're feeling extra generous!) and we'll make sure it gets to Country Companion Animal Rescue to make a homeless pet a whole lot happier this Christmas. . Country Companion Animal Rescue is a not for profit, r...egistered charity which has been operating for more than 5 years now. In this time they have found homes for over 300 animals, including dogs, cats, mini horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, chooks & ducks. They also help rehabilitate native animals, birds & reptiles having WIRES members as volunteers. The animals are collected from country pounds, where the chance of being adopted are slim. They are picked up and taken to their rescue just south of Sydney, until a new home can be found. Some stay for only a few weeks, others can be there for months or even years. All the animals are microchipped, vaccinated, desexed, flea & worm treated as well as life time registered. CCAR prefer to travel to country areas where the chance of a new life is difficult & bring them to where their chance of adoption is much higher. So many dogs who were born in the country areas that have been suffering the drought, are now enjoying wonderful lives on the beach & swimming in rivers & lagoons, including Dr Shelton's new rescue dog, Luna! . CCAR WISHLIST Premium quality dog, cat, rabbit and bird food/seed. Quality Flea, Worming, Tick and Heartworm prevention products. Toys. Treats. Pet Shampoo. Monetary donations - always helpful to cover veterinary bills and travel expenses to bring the animals back to CCAR. . Donations can be dropped off to St George Animal Hospital or Princes Highway Veterinary Hospital. https://www.facebook.com/Ccarpetrehoming/ See more
23.01.2022 CHRISTMAS TREE SAFETY With Christmas Trees going up early this year, here are a few safety tips to remember. Securely anchor your tree so pets cannot knock it over... Sweep up pine needles to avoid them being eaten Keep breakable or edible ornaments up high Keep pets from drinking the tree water as it may have toxic preservatives in it Keep puppies and kittens away from tree lights no chewing! Avoid using tinsel, string or ribbons - they can cause severe damage if ingested Place only safe presents under the tree just in case your pet takes an interest. If the present is from somebody else, please remember to ask them if it is safe to be under your tree. See more

13.01.2022 Canine Leptospirosis - An Ongoing Problem Clusters of confirmed cases of canine leptospirosis in Sydney were reported in 2018 and 2019, and in recent weeks, further cases have been reported. Based on an increased risk to dogs, the University of Sydney strongly recommends vaccination against leptospirosis for dogs who have known contact with rats (hunting/eating) and recommends discouraging your dog from drinking from stagnant water (e.g. puddles/ponds). The early warning sign...s of leptospirosis are pretty subtle, here are a few of the symptoms to watch out for: Lethargy or exhaustion Disinterest and quietness Haemorrhaging under the skin (bruising) Blood in the urine Vomiting and diarrhoea If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to get your dog to the vet. To check your dogs vaccination status or to book in for a Leptospirosis vaccination, please contact us on 02 9587 3599

01.01.2022 MEET THE BAD GUYS! It’s peak paralysis tick season in Australia, and here’s why us pet owners need to be aware of paralysis ticks and protect our furry friends: The paralysis tick is the single most dangerous tick for dogs and cats in Australia A single female paralysis tick can lay up to 3,000 eggs at a time... A tick is a small blood-sucking parasite that is related to spiders After attaching and feeding, a paralysis tick starts producing a potent toxin that affects the animals’ central nervous system and causes progressive paralysis and possible death Without a doubt, prevention is better than cure! Here are three things we recommend to help reduce your pets’ risk of suffering from tick paralysis: 1. Preventative treatment Tick paralysis can be prevented with long-lasting treatments available to protect your pet 2. Daily inspections use your finger tips to feel your pet’s coat from head to foot every day 3. Watch from symptoms Be vigilant and keep an eye out for weakness, paralysis, agitation and unusual breathing patterns Contact us at the clinic today to discuss the best treatment option and learn how you can protect your pet from the nasty critters.
