10.01.2022 SCAM ALERT St George Police have received reports of new scams involving Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree transactions. There are a range of security measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of being scammed Some safety tips to keep in mind when buying and selling online especially when buying/selling items of high value (Mobile phones, jewelry etc,)... ...... Always look for reputable sites and dealers with a proven sales history. ...... Meet in a public place. If you’re meeting a buyer or seller, meet in a public place. Ensure that place is populated, and during daylight hours. ...... Try the product out first. If you are trying to buy an electronic item or something that could be broken or fraudulent, ask for a demonstration. If the seller hesitates, this probably isn't the deal for you. ...... Bring backup. Never meet someone you don't know by yourself. Bring a friend or family member with you. This lessens the likelihood of issues arising. ...... Only bring enough cash for the purchase. If meeting in person, only bring enough cash for the purchase. If it’s a high-priced transaction, make it through a bank. ...... Try to get a detailed receipt. While most sales are final, if something goes wrong with the product, a proof of purchase might help you get it fixed or swapped for a new product. ...... Don't give out your information. Consider using a messaging app or creating an email address for the sale/purchase. ...... If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Dating and romance is arguably the most deceptive as the imposter usually forms a close bond with their victim, playing their emotions and gaining their trust, before taking their money and leaving them heartbroken. NEVER transfer money to someone you havent met, no matter how genuine they appear. #ScamsWeek2020

01.01.2022 HOLIDAY SEASON With Christmas Holidays fast approaching, St George Police would like to share some Holiday Crime Prevention tips:... Be careful of Holiday scams. Do not give out any personal information such as your credit card details and do not open emails or click links from people you do not know Consider using a messaging app or creating an email address for the sale/purchase. Always look for reputable sites and dealers with proven sales history Consider picking up your parcels from the post office; safety deposit boxes; or click and collect facilities; if that is not convenient than have parcels delivered to where someone is at home or waiting When parcels are delivered to unit complexes, not to have them left in public foyers or externally. Obtain tracking number of the parcel or sign in to receive notification when the parcel is due to be delivered. Ensure the parcel is collected in person by either yourself or a trusted person on your behalf. If you are meeting a buyer or seller, meet them in public. Ensure that place is populated and during daylight hours. Never meet someone you don’t know by yourself. Bring a friend or family member with you. When out shopping or running errands, be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse under your arm. Keep a wallet in an inside jacket pocket, not a back trouser pocket. Do not leave purses or handbags unattended in a shopping trolley. Do not display your Christmas gifts near window so that they are easily visible from outside of the house. Take a walk around outside to see if valuables are visible through windows Avoid sharing too much information on social media about your movements or what you got from Santa After Christmas Day, do not pile up bulky gift boxes in your recycling bin for a passer-by to see. Break the boxes down or cut them up to better conceal the items
