25.01.2022 How to properly wear a surgical mask...I'm sure we've all done it. Which way is the right way? Blue side showing or white side showing? Our friends CPR Kids have provided the following information on mask safety: ****NOTE: when we say smooth side in the picture as a no-no, perhaps a better word to describe it is softer side. This is the absorbent side, and should be on the inside. The water repellent side should be on the outside... The coloured side faces outwards. If both sides are coloured, it is the darker side that faces out. If your mask is the same on both sides, feel it (with clean hands) - the softer side goes on your face (this is the only time you can touch the front of your mask - the front of your mask is a NO TOUCH ZONE!) The metal strip goes over your nose and helps to make the mask fit snuggly. Press the metal strip to conform to the shape of your nose. Pull the bottom of your mask (by the edge) under your chin so it fits snuggly around your face. Change your surgical mask if it becomes moist or dirty Be thoughtful when you dispose of it, drop it straight into the bin! The sequence to put a mask on: 1. sanitise your hands. 2. put on mask holding by the loops. 3. ensure snug fit (metal strip across nose and bottom of mask under your chin). 4. sanitise hands. The sequence to take a mask off: 1. sanitise your hands. 2. remove mask by touching loops only, NEVER the front of your mask. 3. drop straight into the bin. 4. sanitise hands.

21.01.2022 Sleep Awareness Week 2020 Everyone's experienced the fatigue, restlessness and lack of focus that often follow a poor night's sleep. A good nights sleep is vital for good health as it allows our bodies to repair themselves and our brains to consolidate our memories and process information. Top Tip - Wind down before you go to bed... The act of relaxing and winding down before going to sleep is an important step in the process of going to bed. Not only can certain actions be incorporated into your routine to tell your body its time to sleep, such as stretching or gentle yoga routines, but the activities themselves can help you to chill out. Organising your thoughts and putting them down on a to-do list or weekly planner can help you clear your mind of worries or concerns, or even just setting an alarm on your phone with a label to remind you to do something urgent. Reading a book, listing to calming music or a podcast can also lull you to sleep by taking your mind off of things and get your brain going as you fall into a deep sleep. It could even stop you worrying about whether youre going to get to sleep! #ramsayhealth #sleepbetter #sleepinCOVID19 #sleepawarenessweek #sleepandmentalhealth #SAW2020 #SleepAwarenessWeek

17.01.2022 OLYMPIC STAR INSPIRES RAMSAY STAFF ON R U OK? DAY Olympic swimming champion Brooke Hanson OAM has praised the amazing work of Ramsay Health Care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of an inspiring webinar to mark R U OK? Day. The national day of action encourages Australians to ask friends, family and colleagues R U OK? if someone in their world is struggling with lifes ups and downs.... Ms Hanson told the hundreds of Ramsay staff who joined the webinar, it was important people take time out for themselves and celebrate their small achievements, not only the big ones. You have all gone above and beyond during this COVID-19 pandemic and youve done so much for our country, Ms Hanson said. You wont always get credit but know that you are loved and supported by so many Australians and we wouldnt have gotten through this without you. So many times youve done fantastic things at work but you may not take time out with colleagues to pat yourselves on the back and say well done. You really need to reach out to each other and celebrate - it can just be as simple as saying hey, well done. Ms Hanson, an Olympic gold and silver medallist, world champion and former world record holder, delivered an inspirational hour-long presentation, where she spoke of the immense challenges she has faced - not only in pursuing her sporting dream but also in her private life, with the loss of her second child Jack at just nine months old. There have been times where I havent been ok, the 42 year old said. I held my son Jack for his last breath and it showed me how precious and short life can be. Id give all my Olympic achievements, all those medals, away if I could have just one more cuddle with my little man. We had to say goodbye to him and that was the saddest day of my life, Ms Hanson said. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well. Were all going to struggle with mental health at some point and we all have to conquer and support each other. Its why R U OK? Day is so important. Ms Hanson spoke of the importance of self-love and self-care - which included a healthy diet, exercise and getting plenty of sleep. Its one of those magical things, exercise, healthy living and eating can make a big difference, she said. The link to Ms Hansons powerful webinar will be available to the Ramsay workforce on the intranet to watch at a time convenient for them. She has also written a book, When Silver is Gold, with all profits from the sale of each copy donated to Lifes Little Treasures Foundation in memory of her son Jack.

16.01.2022 A to Z of Pregnancy I is for.....INDUCTION. Hands up if your labour was induced? If so, you’re sure to know the process!... Whilst in many cases, labour will start naturally, there are some instances where it doesn’t and as such, the process is artificially commenced. It might involve inserting hormones near your cervix to induce your labour and / or breaking your waters and giving you hormones to start contractions. In Australia, about 1 in 3 women have an induced labour* You and your Obstetrician can discuss together, whether an induction of labour is indicated based on our individual pregnancy. It’s generally only offered where there is a specific reason for it. That might include: 1. Being overdue 2. If there are any concerns with the placenta not working as it should. 3. If your baby has limited movement or if there are changes to baby’s heart rate. 4. If you have a health condition like high blood pressure or diabetes. 5. If your waters have broken but contractions have not commenced. (*info sourced from pregnancybirthbaby)

15.01.2022 #WBW2020 As Mums, we are all adapting to major changes in our environments and in our daily lives, as the covid-19 pandemic continues. There are many different demands on busy mothers, meaning that women who may want to breastfeed their babies havent always got the support to continue this. ... Busy working schedules, alongside the many other challenges that modern women face, can mean that women dont always feel that breastfeeding their child is something that is an accessible option to them. Breastfeeding week aims to raise awareness of the health and wellbeing outcomes of breastfeeding and the importance of supporting mothers to breastfeed for as long as they wish. #worldbreastfeedingweek2020 #RamsayMaternity

12.01.2022 RAMSAY CARES: LAUNCHES A NEW SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY Ramsay Health Care has demonstrated through COVID-19 that we are committed to being a sustainable and responsible health care provider. This last year has been filled with example after example of our hospitals, doctors and staff stepping up to care for patients, volunteering to work in aged care facilities, and assisting small businesses in our communities. We are therefore launching a new sustainability strategy called ...Ramsay Cares. Earlier this year Ramsay staff from a variety of roles around the country were involved in a global project to review Ramsay’s sustainability strategy. The process involved seeking feedback from across the organisation on what they would like to see in Ramsay Health Care’s global sustainability strategy. Ramsay Cares is our global sustainability strategy made up of 3 parts: The Ramsay Way of ‘people caring for people’ means our people and patients are our priority. We are focused on: - Fostering a safe, caring and inclusive culture - Engaging and developing our people - Delivering high-quality patient outcomes and experience - Being a trusted partner for our doctors and clinicians - Mental health and wellness Ramsay Health Care recognises that conserving and protecting the environment for future generations is a critical issue. We are focused on the key challenges of: - Climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, - Reducing energy and water use, - Reducing resource use such as single-use plastics where it safe to do so - Increasing recycling and reducing waste - Promoting more sustainable buildings and developments - Working with our suppliers on more sustainable product choices Ramsay Health Care recognises that we have an important role to play in the local communities we serve and society at large. We are focused on: - Advancing health outcomes through medical research, clinical teaching and training - A global approach towards health care prevention - Supporting local communities Ramsay Cares is a key global initiative to which we in Australia are absolutely committed, as evidenced by the commencement of our plastics initiative to reduce single-use plastic items. We will keep you updated over the coming months. Carmel Monaghan Chief Executive Officer Please visit the NEW Ramsay Cares section on our Australian website, which we have launched this week. https://rmsyhc.com/2JFeuWo

12.01.2022 ASK - Because a conversation could change a life Got a feeling that someone you know or care about it isn't behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they're just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it. By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you've noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not OK, you can follow our conversation steps to sh...ow them they're supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are OK, that person will know you're someone who cares enough to ask. https://youtu.be/ALcTGgr8z3k

11.01.2022 Encourage Action Ask: "What have you done in the past to manage similar situations?" Ask: "How would you like me to support you?"... Ask: "What's something you can do for yourself right now? Something that's enjoyable or relaxing?" You could say: "When I was going through a difficult time, I tried this... You might find it useful too." If they've been feeling really down for more than 2 weeks, encourage them to see a health professional. You could say, "It might be useful to link in with someone who can support you. I'm happy to assist you to find the right person to talk to." Be positive about the role of professionals in getting through tough times.

10.01.2022 Are you pregnant and planning to breastfeed? The NSW Government have a great Breastfeeding Booklet that covers a lot of common questions around breastfeeding. Download your copy today by clicking the link below:... https://www.health.nsw.gov.au//breastfeeding-your-baby.pdf

09.01.2022 Listen with an open mind If you are concerned about someone, trust your gut and ask, Are you OK?. Listen with an open mind to what they have to say and ask them what you can do to help. In the current circumstances, there might be limits on what you can do but you can definitely be a listening ear and a (virtual) shoulder to lean on. Take what they say seriously and don't interrupt or rush the conversation.... Don't judge their experiences or reactions but acknowledge that things seem tough for them. If they need time to think, sit patiently with the silence. Encourage them to explain: "How are you feeling about that?" or "How long have you felt that way?" Show that you've listened by repeating back what you've heard (in your own words) and ask if you have understood them properly. https://rmsyhc.com/2GyhHFO

09.01.2022 HOW TO AVOID BACK PAIN WHILE WORKING FROM HOME As we continue to adjust to new and flexible working environments, what is the best way to avoid back pain and injury? Posture Plus ... Poor posture puts stress on your back and can cause upper and middle back pain. - Try to stand or sit tall, keeping your back as straight as possible and balance your weight evenly on both feet. - Don't slump or slouch and keep your shoulders rolled back. - If you spend a lot of time at a computer, at home and at work, make sure the screen is at eye level, never below and not too far away so that you have to reach to it. Be Active No matter your exercise levels, it's generally good advice to stay as active as possible to promote back health and reduce the risk of developing problems. - If you're sat at a desk all day, get up and walk around or just shift your sitting posture as often as possible. - Take the stairs where possible. - Gardening, cleaning, and other household activities can help to increase your exercise levels while still being productive De-Stress Stress can make your pain feel worse. Learning ways to reduce your stress may result in reduced pain. You could try deep breathing and relaxation exercises or meditation.

08.01.2022 Over the next 26 weeks, we're going to take you through the A to Z of pregnancy! For each letter of the alphabet, we'll discuss a topic around pregnancy and babies! A is for......? What's your guess. We'll let you know next week.

07.01.2022 CHECK-IN The coronavirus pandemic comes as many Australians are still feeling the impact of recent bushfires, floods and drought. Its very normal to not feel OK in challenging times such as these. Watching and listening to media and social media coverage and commentary can be confronting and confusing. However, at a time when were being asked to physically distance ourselves from one another, we can make use of freed up diary time and our digital devices to stay connected.... Pop a reminder in your diary to call them in a couple of weeks. If they're really struggling, follow up with them sooner. You could say: "I've been thinking of you and wanted to know how you've been going since we last chatted." Ask if they've found a better way to manage the situation. If they haven't done anything, don't judge them. They might just need someone to listen to them for the moment. Stay in touch and be there for them. Genuine care and concern can make a real difference.

05.01.2022 A TO Z OF PREGNANCY The letter J... J is for JAUNDICE.... Some of you may have heard the term but don’t know or understand exactly what it means so today we outline this in a little more detail. Simply, Jaundice causes the skin and white part of the eyes to go a yellow colour. It’s caused by excess of the pigment bilirubin. It’s generally broken down by the liver but in a baby, they can’t break it down quick enough, giving them that yellow appearance. Whilst it’s usually harmless, it is important that you tell your Doctor so it can be monitored! It’s a common condition in newborns.
