12.01.2022 Barry Telfer RIP, Sad news from UTS Club President It is with incredible sadness and immense heartbreak, that I write to inform the Club of the passing of Barry... Gordon Telfer. Its just on 12 months since Barry’s shock cancer diagnosis. He fought bravely throughout 2017, initially making encouraging progress before succumbing to the disease on the morning of January 29, 2018. He was just 46 years old. Bazza joined UTS Hockey Club in 1992, to be part of the first men’s team we entered in the Sydney Hockey Association competition. He also represented UTS that year in the first-ever ‘multi-sport’ Intervarsity, the Winter Games held in Melbourne. Bazza then travelled to Brisbane as the Men’s team manager, for the inaugural Australian University Games in 1993. He Graduated from UTS in April 1993 with a Bachelor of Science (Computer Science). Bazza’s contribution to UTS Hockey Club has been immense over the past 25 years. He played every season outdoor, indoor and then Masters, doubled-up to help teams whenever asked, held multiple roles on the Committee, coached teams, umpired, acted as a Team Manager, filled-in as Ball-Boy, helped with social events, cooked the BBQ, sourced and delivered items for the Club House, and basically volunteered to help the Club in any way possible. He was enthusiastic, reliable, funny, and an instant friend to all who met him. Over the last decade Barry and wife Fiona have focused their energies on building our Junior Club, which in 2017 grew to over 100 participants for the first time. Despite his illness he continued to assist with the Junior Programme, and took great delight supporting son Joel in our successful under 13 and under 15 teams last season. As a player, Barry had the reputation as a skilful - and often freakish - defender. We could always rely on him to make the last-ditched tackle that everyone else had missed. His amazing fitness and abilities saw him selected to represent NSW in the over 35s and over 40s teams at the National Masters Championships. In recognition of his contribution over 25 years, Barry became a Life Member of UTS Hockey Club in December 2017. A Committal Service to celebrate Barry’s life will be held next Wednesday: Wednesday 7th February, 2018 Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium (Corner of Plassey Road and Delhi Road, NORTH RYDE) Camellia Chapel Commencing at 2:30 pm Fiona and Joel have requested that anyone wishing to leave condolences, or post photos and happy memories of Baz, to please do so at the following link: https://www.heavenaddress.com//Barry-Gordon-Telfer/1799808/ Paul Economides Club President
