17.01.2022 St George FC are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Frank Arok, former legendary coach of the Saints and Australia. Frank was without doubt the dominant coach in the 64 year history of the club, taking control of the Saints in three separate stints, firstly for two years in 1969 and 1970, leading the team to two Grand Finals, before returning in 1972 where he swept all before him with arguably the greatest St George team of all time. That year saw the Saints claim th...e Ampol Cup, Premiership and Grand Final. With St George struggling in the National Soccer League in 1980, and being relegated to the State League for 1981, Frank returned to the Saints for a third time, for his longest and most productive stint of eleven consecutive seasons. After winning the State League Grand Final and gaining immediate promotion back to the NSL, Frank held the reins as coach until the end of 1990/91 when St George were omitted from a restructured NSL. During his combined fourteen years as coach with St George, Frank won four Grand Finals (including two Top 4 NSL championships), two Premierships, finished second five times, and third on another two occasions. A record of success and consistency unlikely to be broken. Notably, he took his beloved St George to our only national title in 1983, a year he also coached the Socceroos for the first time, in a three-game series against England. Initially assuming the role as caretaker, with national coach Les Scheinflug on Under 20 World Cup duty, Frank eventually gained the role full time, leading Australia for two World Cup campaigns, with a well-remembered play off against Scotland in 1985, and an even more memorable 1-1 draw against Israel in 1989 at the newly opened Sydney Football Stadium. Who can forget Frank remonstrating with the Italian referee about the lack of injury time at the conclusion of that game? Frank also took Australia to the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where the Socceroos reached the quarterfinals. Remarkably, Frank was able to coach the Saints and Australia concurrently, being successful at both, his desire and love for the game and his teams unmatched. Frank went on to coach Marconi, South Melbourne and Gippsland Falcons following the Saints’ NSL omission, but it will always be while with St George and Australia that Frank Arok will best be remembered and revered.
