25.01.2022 It is with sadness and delight we announce that lay clerk Jonty Coy will be leaving Perth to study a Masters in Early Music (Flute) at the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague at the end of August. This news is life changing for Jonty who has been a loyal and talented member of the Cathedral music department since 2015 and will be sorely missed. We will farewell and sent Jonty off with our blessings at this weeks 10am Choral Eucharist. ... Congratulations!

22.01.2022 The Organ Voluntary this evening will be Adagio from Suite Modale Op.43 by Flor Peeters (1903-1986) played by Dr Joseph Nolan. Flor Peeters was a Belgian composer, organist and academic. Peeters was organist of Mechelen Cathedral where he wrote the Suite Modale as a more modern answer to the ever popular Suite Gothique by Lon Bollmann. The Adagio is a melancholy affair, with a plangent, bel-canto melody being heard on a singing reed stop in the RH. Peeters develops a mo...re urgent and scalic B section (piu mosso-more movement) with pressing quavers being heard in the left hand. These quavers are often set against the RH melody, two against three, which creates an anxious and unsettled atmosphere. Being set in Ternary form (ABA) Peeters brings back the original calm of section A and this beautiful piece ends serenely, but ambiguously as Peeters keeps the modality intact on the final chord (no major or minor third). The form of Peeters Adagio does indeed mirror the more famous Priere a Notre Dame by Bollmann, but is really much more austere in terms of character. See more
