22.01.2022 The annual St George and Sutherland Hospitals Medical Research Symposium was held on Thursday 29th October. This year due to COVID-19 restrictions the Symposium was held virtually incorporating a live event and dedicated event App to display all presentations and posters. Although the format for this year’s event had changed this did not discourage student’s submitting their projects with over 55 abstracts submitted for Best Clinical Research and Basic Science Oral Presentat...ions, Best Poster Presentations and Best Presentation by an Undergraduate Student. We take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated and submitted their work and congratulate this year’s award winners. Dr Marianne Gale, Director of SESLHD’s Population and Community Health Directorate, will present a review of the District’s public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 13.01.2022 SSMRF is proud to administer the 2020 Dr George C. Wilson AM Prize, helping to ensure Dr George Charles Wilson AM’s passion for the training of young doctors lives on. Dr George Charles Wilson AM was a prominent medical practitioner in the Kogarah region from 1951 to 2004. Following his passing in May 2011, the family of Dr Wilson made a generous donation to the St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation (SSMRF) to establish the Dr George C. Wilson AM Prize, honouring... Dr Wilson’s passion for education and training of young doctors. The Dr George C. Wilson AM Prize now in its 8th year is awarded to a St George Hospital junior doctor who is deemed to have conducted the best Grand Rounds presentation in the year of the award. This year’s Dr George C. Wilson AM Prize was awarded to Dr Antonia Clarke for her presentation entitled: Twas Two Nights Before Christmas We take this opportunity to congratulate the winner and thank Dr George Wilson’s family.
12.01.2022 SSMRF's much-loved fundraising event the Beachside Dash fun run has gone virtual this year! Although the format of the Dash may be different, the cause is still the same - raising vital funds for medical research in St George and Sutherland Hospitals. This year to raise funds for our hospitals, on Saturday 28th November Team SSMRF will be completing a 21.5km loop starting in Kogarah at St George Hospital, heading to The Sutherland Hospital and then back to St George Hospital.... 09.01.2022 Today, Sunday 22 November the St George District Cricket Club Sydney will conduct its Annual Charity Walk to help raise awareness and much needed funds for SSMRF. This is the 7th year the Club has chosen SSMRF as their Charity Partner and Club President and Georges River Mayor, Kevin Greene and his wife Frances will again lead the Walk. The walk will cover 20 kms through Hurstville, Allawah, Carlton, Sth Hurstville, Oatley, Mortdale, Peakhurst, Riverwood and Penshurst before ...returning to Hurstville Oval in time for the 1st grade game at 2.30pm. 04.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT: 2020 SSMRF Research Grant Recipients Earlier this year, we announced the 2020 SSMRF Grant Rounds open for Expression of Interest applications. The SSMRF Research Committee has now completed the difficult review and selection process and we are excited to announce the 2020 SSMRF Medical Research Grant Recipients. Three researchers from the St George Hospital and the Sutherland Hospital have been awarded a SSMRF research grant. Dr Kevin (Jie) Ni, $46,000... A novel liquid biopsy assay of blood exosomal microRNA profiles to improve prostate cancer. Professor Georgina Hold, $50,000 Facilitating Translational Research Studies in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Dr Bill Giannakopoulos, $50,000 Quantification of redox forms of plasma ApoJ, ApoH and PDI to identify at risk patients for Alzheimer’s disease. Research projects such as these which are focussed on improving care for medical conditions and diseases that impact many in our community, are made possible through the support and donations from our SSMRF community and we take this opportunity to thank you once again for your generosity.
