23.01.2022 REFLECTION This is a favourite parable of Matthew, continuing and concluding his theme that forgiveness is the life’s-blood of any Christian community. Matthew gathers together into one chapter the special teachings about the community of the disciples, and half of it concerns quarrels, offences and disagreements. We cannot live together without upsetting one another, unwittingly, or even deliberately. So forgiveness is the vital step, and real forgiveness cements a relations...hip, leaving it stronger than it was before the offence. Don’t forgive and forget, but remember the forgiveness! The parable expands and stresses the petition in the Lord’s Prayer, ‘ Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive others. ‘ The importance of this petition was already underlined by Matthew; it is the only petition of the Lord’s Prayer to which he adds at the end a confirmatory saying of Jesus. Like so many of Matthew’s parables, this one revolves round contrasting characters, the ‘ goodie’ and the ‘baddie’ (wedding-guests and guest without a wedding-garment; the two who use their talents and the one who hides it; the girls with and without oil for their lamps; the sheep and the goats). The contrast between the two sums of money is deliberately fantastic: the first slave owes millions of dollars, a sum no private person could ever repay, let alone a slave; it is more than a year’s tax for a whole Roman province. The second owes a couple of month’s wages of a casual labourer. http://universalis.com/ See more

18.01.2022 In today’s Gospel,we reflect upon the Parable of the Talents where we are reminded of why we need to use our God-given gifts and talents well. That is why we Ch...ristians are appalled by a wasted life: by a child killed in the womb, an infant who starves or an adolescent who dies from a drug overdose. We are horrified, not out of some sort of judgmentalism, but because in every human being we see an individual of the highest dignity and greatest promise, the image of God. That is the challenge of our Gospel passage, as each of us writes his or her unique life-story with the talents we have received on trust, not to bury our talents, but to invest them well. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Mass attendance is still limited to 100 people in most of our parishes this weekend, with 300 permitted at each Mass at St Mary's Cathedral. If you're unable to attend Mass in person, I invite you to join me at 1030am for a livestreamed Mass from St Mary's Cathedral via this link: https://bit.ly/32K0YYr My ongoing prayers are with you all.

17.01.2022 ARCHANGELS: MICHAEL, GABRIEL, AND RAPHAEL Feast Day: September 29 Angels are messengers from God. Three of the special messengers mentioned in the Bible are the archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. The names of each of these archangels tell us about the work God gave them to do.... Michael’s name means who is like God. God gave Michael the responsibility of protecting us as God protects us. Gabriel’s name means hero of God. Gabriel is God’s hero because he communicates God’s message to people. We remember Gabriel best for being the angel who announced to Mary that she would be the mother of God’s only Son. Raphael’s name means God has healed. In the Bible, Raphael heals a blind man and is said to have stirred the water in a pool where Jesus healed a paralyzed man. On the feast day of the archangels, we remember that God’s messengers guide us in our journey to everlasting life with our Father. We can pray to Michael when we face temptation. We can ask to Gabriel to help us say yes to God as Mary did so many years ago. We can pray to Raphael when we are ill or know someone who is in need of healing. We honor the archangels as saints. They remind us that God is always with us and that God loves so much about us that he gives us special helpers to light and guide us to him.
