25.01.2022 There are 57 prisoners officially buried on St Helena Island. All were given a Christian burial and lie under a Christian cross, despite several not being of the Christian faith. Crosses are marked only by the prisoners administration number.

19.01.2022 Grave of John Hayes (otherwise known as Prisoner 1545). Convicted of Manslaughter, John Hayes arrived on St Helena Island on 2 July 1879 to serve 10 years hard labour. He was found drowned in a water tank on 18 October 1881.



19.01.2022 Shot Drill - A punishment given to prisoners for such misdemeaners as disorderly conduct. An 11kg cannon ball was carried the length of the lumber yard, dropped, picked up again and carried back down the length of the lumber yard. This was repeated for up to an hour and quarter a day for a maximum of 14 days.

14.01.2022 Silk in a Prison? In an attempt to produce raw silk, 7 acres of Mulberry Trees were planted on St Helena Island in 1875. However, the attempt was unsuccessful, and most of the trees were removed.

12.01.2022 Did you know that St Helena Island became Queenslands first Historical National Park? An official declaration ceremony was held on St Helena Island on Sunday 7 October 1979. The day ended on a dramatic note with over 200 people having to be rescued from the island due to strong winds.
