23.01.2022 So says Tom Peters in his book In Search of Excellence. I was reminded of this amid Master Chef's George Colambaris saga involving the massive underpayment of staff across his celebrated food venues. Breaches of this nature are civil rather than criminal crimes, but irrespective of law, wage theft is about as crass as it gets and offensive to standards of decency between employer and employees. 19.01.2022 I don’t like laws that 'criminalise' the doing of something lawful. For this reason, I remain ambivalent to North Sydney’s decision to ban smoking within the CBD. According to the mayor, it is not a law that they intend to enforce - so why have it? She maintains that it is more about doing something positive for non-smokers. Well, I am a non-smoker and I don’t see anything positive about this banishment at all. To continue reading my latest blog, click the image below... 15.01.2022 Recently I was discussing the topic of ageism in the workplace with a group of older Australians. It is well known that ageism is a big factor in restricting work opportunities for this group. Over one-third of Australian employers 'admit' that age limitation for job applicants is in place, despite the practice being illegal. The real level of ageism at work in the employment arenas of Australia is likely to be much higher than 30 per cent. However, I was reminded that ageism does work in the other direction as well. 12.01.2022 "I can resist everything except temptation" said Oscar Wilde. Sage words as yet another political donation issue is making headlines. The NSW Labor party has taken a sizeable cash donation from a Chinese billionaire property developer. It is illegal for political parties to receive donations from property developers in NSW? 12.01.2022 Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt. If Shakespeare, were he alive, was looking for a moment to prove his words through deeds, then it unfolded on Sunday, the 4th day of the Ashes test at the Headingly Cricket Ground in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. 11.01.2022 New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the number of people aged 65 or over in the jobs market has swelled by 25 per cent in the past two years. By contrast, among those aged between 15 and 64, the number had increased by 4.5 per cent. To continue reading my latest blog, click the image below... 09.01.2022 For the first time in a long time, we’re setting up a generation to be worse off than the one before it! These are the words of Danielle Wood and Kate Fraser of the Grattan Institute. In their report, Generation Gap: ensuring a fair go for younger Australians, the authors reveal that Australia's younger generations are not making the same economic gains as their predecessors. 09.01.2022 I know readers of this column are interested in child-raising topics especially those that compare the contemporary way to those of our (Baby Boomer) upbringing. Novelist John Marsden, a Baby Boomer has a view that today’s children are so over-protected, so regulated, so focused on test results rather than knowledge, so censored and spied on by adults that on reaching adulthood they are 20 going on six and find the world a difficult place to be. Many of you will agree, many will not, but like me, I suspect most of you will think that most of what Marsden is saying has merit. To continue reading my latest blog, click the image below... 09.01.2022 Although this cartoon is not coming to you on Father’s Day, I am hopeful the memories of the day are still fresh in your mind. If my father were still alive, he would have loved this cartoon. He would have laughed very hard. He was a great storyteller except for one problem... 09.01.2022 Last month I wrote an opinion piece on the Israel Folau saga (refer to blog; The SBW Conundrum). I had a view that the Christian Lobby had jumped on the religious Folau freedom bandwagon far too soon. I thought their move was opportunistic and unmeasured. So, it was with a great deal of interest that I followed church leaders responses to the sacking of Israel Folau's cousin, Josiah Folau from a Catholic school for comparing Catholicism and the Church as a synagogue of Satan and masked devil worship. 08.01.2022 Today's comic by Scott Hilburn, is one I sourced a few years ago. At that time, I was, along with the population of Christchurch, dealing with the devastating damage caused by the earthquakes in that city. Earthquakes are especially unfortunate disaster events because of aftershocks. You never quite know when they are finished. For example, Christchurch had over 40,000 aftershocks, and each time there was one of 4.5 magnitudes, this would re-set the three months stand-down pe...riod for claims. As frustrating it was at the time, I guess it was understandable given the fact that more damage could occur each time; damage upon damage was happening as the shocks were continually eroding already weakened structures. 04.01.2022 I was impressed by an ABC documentary this week which featured actor Sam Neill. He exudes decency and seems a genuine and lovely bloke with a considerable measure of modesty for one so successful. The documentary traced his childhood in NZ and allowed viewers to learn of his boy-hood and early adult experiences. Viewers also got insight into his beautiful family home in Dunedin, before heading off to Christchurch, where he attended college and university. Many things he was r...eminding himself about would be familiar to those who were born after the end of WW2. However, there were two observations Neill made that were particularly topical. These were the demise of the 'free' university education in NZ and Australia, and the 'contradictory' role that religion and fundamentalism have had on humanity. I will leave Neill's religious observations for another day. To continue reading my latest blog, click the image below... 03.01.2022 Thomas Szasz, the author of the book The Manufacture of Madness, claimed that the greatest analgesic, stimulant, tranquilliser, narcotic, and to some extent even antibiotic (in short), the closest thing to a genuine panacea - known to medical science is to work. I one hundred per cent agree with him and if governments were to fully commit to creating a society that normalised the working-age out way beyond the entitlement age, then aged care costs, rich nations greatest funding challenge, would be slashed...
