25.01.2022 A Work A Day Exhibitions: 'Love Sick' 2010 & 'Ever Fresh' 2016 curated by Josephine Skinner.... Image: Adham Faramawy Vichy Shower (detail), HD Video, 2014 chosen by Stephen Zagala - Senior Curator, Monash Gallery of Art "More than a dealership, Stills fostered conversations and research that set it apart from other commercial galleries. For me, this was particularly evident in curated exhibitions like 'Love Sick' (2010) and 'Ever Fresh' (2016) that offered new perspectives on photography and contemporary culture more generally." #stills_gallery #curtaincall #aworkaday Adham Faramawy Kristin Cammeyer Photography Kawita Vatanajyankur Artist Emily Parsons-Lord Tully Arnot Marilyn Schneider Josephine Skinner

22.01.2022 A Work A Day Image: Brenda L Croft ‘Brilliant clever scholar ward’ 2016 from from 'subalter/N/ative dreams'... Pigment print 110 x 88cm chosen by Joanna Mendelssohn Honorary Associate Professor UNSW | Art & Design | UNSW AUSTRALIA It is so hard to choose which artist and which work from the many exhibitions I’ve enjoyed at Stills. There’s Sandy Edwards’ Brewarrina series, which I think was the first exhibition I saw. Then exhibitions by William Yang, Polixeni Papapetrou, Merilyn Fairskye, Anne Ferran, Ricky Maynard so many brilliant photographers. My mother admired Robyn Stacey’s ‘Surrender (Pink)’ just before she had a heart attack. I bought a print, which stayed with her for the last years of her life, and now belongs to my granddaughter. Brenda L Croft’s ‘subalter/N/ative dreams’ is a tough rigorous self-analysis by one of Australia’s finest photographers. She takes an unsentimental look at the landscape of Gurindji country, a place damaged by the legacy of invasion. ‘Shut/mouth/scream’ shows both a fragment of an archival image of her grandmother, and a detail of a self-portrait. The most moving photographs are the self-portraits close ups examining her face in uncompromising detail. The images are manipulated, and labelled with the names white administrators carelessly threw at Aboriginal people "Fullblood, dark/blood light/blood Native Abo., Half-caste, Quadroon. "Brilliant clever scholar ward on one photograph are words used to describe her father, who was stolen and raised in an ‘orphanage’. The Gurindji story is most commonly presented in the media as a one of triumph. These are the people who walked off Wave Hill, who were shown as being given their land rights in Merv Bishop’s famous 1975 photograph. Croft shows both their legacy of endurance and the human cost of survival. #curtaincall #aworkaday #stills_gallery #brendacroft #gurindji Brenda L Croft Joanna Mendelssohn

11.01.2022 A Work A Day Image: Marketa Luskacova 'Children and lovers at the seaside, Whitley Bay', 1978 Silver gelatin photograph... Chosen by Lisa Sharkey Stills Gallery lead installer 1997-2010 I installed 13 years of Stills Gallery exhibitions, starting soon after we moved to Gosbell St. With the greater space and the advancement of digital printing, we began installing photographs that spanned the length of the wall (Robyn Stacey’s ‘Hot House’) or filling the height of the wall (Peter Solness’ ‘Tree Stories’) or filling the walls with grids ceiling to floor (William Yang’s ‘Miscellaneous Obsessions’) or beach objet (Narelle Autio’s ‘Summer of Us’) or foam letters (Ella Dreyfus’ ‘Scumbag’). The photographer whose work and being stands out, and whose work haunts and inspires me, is Marketa Luskacova. Her series ‘Spitalfields’ and ‘Unknown Remembered’ are the most memorable to me. She gifted me a print, which proudly hangs on my wall to this day. Marketa’s ability to observe sensitive and difficult situations without inserting herself into the scene allows us to attend these events as the observer. Marketa’s personal insights were also inspiring. It was one of Marketa’s works, exhibited on the walls of Stills, in a location that was hit by afternoon sunlight that evoked tears in Trent Parke one Saturday afternoon. He introduced himself and showed me his work. The rest is history. #curtaincall #stills_gallery #aworkaday #lisasharkey #marketaluskacova

03.01.2022 A Work A Day Image: Michael Riley 'Untitled' (Split wing), 2000 from the 'cloud' series... Pigment Print 106 x 150 cm chosen by Ravinder Singh OAM courtesy of The Michael Riley Foundation & The Commercial The work I have selected is 'Untitled' (Split wing) from the series 'cloud' by the great Michael Riley. This image is important to me for two reasons: firstly it is the first photographic work I ever purchased; and secondly this acquisition was the start of my long and very fruitful relationship with Stills. Stills is by far the best gallery I have dealt with - and the most patient I might add! I knew nothing of Michael Riley or his practice before setting eyes on this image when Stills had his show in 2005. All I knew is how I felt about the image - it is incredibly simple and yet it is packed with meaning and substance. The image is ethereal, surreal and it has an overwhelming sense of loss - like a snippet of a memory, of Michael's memory. I bought this work on a feeling and I am eternally grateful that I did because I lose myself in this image every time I look at it. Thank you Stills & I will miss you! #aworkaday #curtaincall #stills_gallery #michaelriley #cloud #thecommercial

02.01.2022 ***************************************************************************** Last few days folks!!! Our final exhibition 'Curtain Call' closes this Saturday July 8 at 5pm. ******************************************************************************... A Work A Day Image: Michael Light, from the project FULL MOON, 1999 The Moon Seen From 1000 Miles, Showing Farside Highlands; Photographed by Kenneth Mattingly, Apollo 16, April 16-27, 1972 Direct-digital b/w c-print; 39.5"x39.5"; edition 50 Negative NASA; digital image 1999 Michael Light Chosen by Chi Eun Song Stills casual gallery assistant The first time I helped carry this artwork our from the storeroom I was struck by the experience - there is something powerfully human, about wanting to capture something impossibly large, and to hold it right here in your hands. The work is also beautifully quiet. Through the hustle and bustle of everyday life at the gallery, the presence of the image facing me opposite my desk is strangely reassuring." #curtaincall #stills_gallery #aworkaday #michaellight #fullmoonproject #fullmoon
