23.01.2022 Craft 3 - Scrapping with photos One can have so much fun with photos. Paper tole as described in a previous post can also be done with multiple copies of the same print, where the people in the picture can be brought to the foreground with the scenery in the background. My favourite is making mosaics with photos, like the 'Dubbo' sample or the Araluan jigsaw picture. It looks complicated but is way easier than it seems with the many stencils and shapes available, as well as ...books with ideas. Some simpler examples are the forest, sunset and boat harbour examples The larger mosaic consists of various photos on the same subject and of the same colouring, all cut up into 2cm squares and meticulously numbered at the back. They are then arranged into a large piece of cardboard (again with a matching colour) overlapping here and there, by leaving out some of the 2cm squares. There you are, your whole holiday in one picture ready to be framed! Another interesting one is weaving. I have used 2 identical size pictures, one in colour and one in black and white. The one is cut into horizontal strips of equal size and the other is cut into vertical strips. They are then woven together just like you learned to do when you were a kid. The strips can be as narrow or as wide as you like. My samples are of my home town, the house where I was born and one of Vancouver city looking from North Vancouver towards the city. On this last one you can see from the incomplete top row how it is done. See more

22.01.2022 Craft 2 - Paper Tole This is an extremely enjoyable, satisfying paper craft that can be as simple or as complicated as you would like to make it. You need multiple copies of a picture of your choice. The 'bottom' picture stays as is. The next layer is put exactly on top but has sections cut away or out of it. The next layer on top has even more sections cut away, and slowly, after multiple layers, a 3-D effect or depth is created in the picture. The number of layers depends on the size or complexity of your picture. A small picture can have 3 to 4 layers while a large picture can have as many as 11 layers.

21.01.2022 Embroidery 1: Hardanger Counted thread embroidery originating in the Hardanger district of Norway, done in pearl thread on an even weave fabric. I call it the art of cutting holes and filling them up again! Beautiful decorative embroidery ideal for doilies, table runners and cloths as well as cushion covers. This is one of my favorites!

21.01.2022 Embroidery 2 - Blackwork Traditionally blackwork was done, as the name suggests, in black thread on an evenweave fabric, linen or aida, but various colours can be used. Blackwork refers to the technique rather than the colour. The fascinating thing about blackwork is that a symetrical design is used repetitively and, as in the case of the swan, the simplicity or the complexity of this design creates the lighter and darker shades.

21.01.2022 Embroidery 4 - Freestyle The name says it all! In freestyle embroidery there are no rules as to which stitches, fabric or cottons can be used. You fancy a running stitch or bullion, a herringbone stitch or a colonial knot, whatever tickles your fancy you can do. This type of embroidery is a great one to start off with as you can practice many different stitches and find out which ones are your favourite. Pick a design, transfer it onto fabric, choose your colours and choose y...our preferred stitch from a great variety and use your completed project as a wall hanging, a cushion, a needle case, a clock, as an embellishment on many household items or to decorate clothing, Freestyle is also a great type of embroidery to introduce children to embroidery, from the very simple running and back stitch to the pretty chain stitch, they will enjoy seeing their picture take shape and come to life. 13.01.2022 Craft 1 - Temari The Japanese craft of Temari uses a process that transforms a plain ball (I use polystyrene) into a decorative ornament or Christmas tree decoration. This is achieved by covering the ball completely with sewing thread to form the base. Then pins are placed in strategic position after which embroidery thread is wound around the pins. Hugely satisfying to do and surprising and beautiful results every time.

03.01.2022 Embroidery 3 - Cross Stitch We were taught embroidery at school and for me, this was cross-stitch. It has remained one of my favourites until this day. It is extremely versatile as it can be used for pictures on the wall, a tablecloth or cushion, or even as an embellishment on clothing. Simple cross-stiched items can even be used in greeting cards. I have made many birth announcements for friends and family as this type of embroidery lends itself very well to writing letters and numbers in a variety of sizes and shapes, even cursive. The project is worked from a pattern which has symbols representing a cross-stitch in a specific colour. This is transferred onto a variety of fabrics, but as it is 'counted' the fabric has to be an evenweave or aida. I have even done a cross-stiched picture on hessian!
