21.01.2022 On Wednesday last week Year 10, as part of their science practical work, were taken onto the oval and shown the different ways that the Tasmanian Indigenous peoples hunted using hand crafted tools such as spears, waddys and digging sticks. Each student had a chance to use each tool and experience the methods that were used. We then had a go at hitting a target to see if we could achieve accuracy as well as distance. We learnt that adult men would use spears 5 meters long and ...children would practice with 3 meter spears. As soon as boys could walk they were learning to throw spears. We were also taught about different seasonal hunting methods and tactics that the Indigenous Austrtalians used in order to gain the advantage on their game. We learnt that wallabies are not hunted whilst the wattles are in flower as it is likely that the females have a joey in the pouch. So possums would be hunted instead. This knowledge will assist us with our investigation to test the optimal length for spear throwers for distance and accuracy. By Year 10 students See more

12.01.2022 Uniform Policy This week will see a blitz on school uniform. It is imperative that parents support the school in advocating a positive image for our school. Parents and Caregivers will need to ensure that ALL students are supplied with the correct school uniform and actively take a role in ensuring that their children are wearing uniform when they leave the house. Wearing a uniform is about developing positive habits for the students, as when they leave school most occupation...s will require people to wear some form of uniform for their job. As a school we are committed in preparing our students for life beyond school and monitoring uniform is a great way for the school and the community of parents to work together to ensure our children are doing the right thing. Many students play in weekend sporting teams and it is the expectation of their sporting clubs that the children wear the appropriate attire when playing that sport. Thats exactly what we expect also. Please support the school in creating a positive school image to the broader Huon Valley Community. We are proud of our school and want the students to feel proud of what they achieve here too. We will be reminding student if they are not in the correct uniform and notes home will commence from Wednesday. A note from you is required if you child is attending school and is not wearing the correct uniform.

08.01.2022 Year 9 Excursion to Dru Point On Wednesday the Year 9 students spent some time on country at Dru Point with Trish and Mitchem from NITA Education to learn about Indigenous foods, hunting techniques and medicines. We would like to thank Trish and Mitchem for sharing their knowledge with us. Two of the most memorable things we learnt were: to catch possums Aboriginal women easily climbed a 50 meter gum tree with only a rope around them. The women at the bottom of the tree would... light a smoke fire to get the possums to come out. The woman at the top would catch the possum by the tail, swing it around to disorientate it and hit it on the head with a waddy. We also learnt that Native Hopps was used as a local anesthetic and was sometimes mixed with Native Cherry to stop bleeding. The Year 9 students will use this Indigenous medicinal knowledge to develop an Extended Experimental Investigation comparing the antibacterial properties of different tree oils on non-pathogenic bacteria.
