24.01.2022 Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction and in some cases, it can rapidly become life threatening. If a patient is suffering from Anaphylaxis, it must be trea...ted as a medical emergency and you must call Triple Zero (000). If you know someone who suffers from severe allergies, it's important to be aware of how you can help them in an emergency. Always follow DRSABCD and if available, administer an Adrenaline Auto-Injector (Epi-Pen). To administer an Adrenaline Auto-Injector (Epi-Pen): Form a firm first around the auto-injector, and pull off the BLUE safety release. Place the ORANGE end against the outer mid-thigh at a 90 degree angle (it can be injected through clothing). Push the top button down hard until a click is heard or felt, and hold in place for three seconds. Remove the auto-injector and dispose of it safely being careful not to touch the needle. Commence CPR if the patient becomes unconscious and is not breathing normally. Remember the golden rule: Orange to thigh, blue to sky!

22.01.2022 Kalbarri Volunteer Fire & Rescue Service, Kalbarri SES, St John WA - Kalbarri and National Park Rangers all pitched in to rescue an injured hiker on the challen...ging Kalbarri National Park Loop Walk last week. It took 6 hours to carefully manoeuvre the patient 3.5km over and around the remarkable rock formations, safely reaching the car park after dark and in the rain. Thank you and well done to all involved in this tricky operation! 13.01.2022 Today is 'R U OK? Day' and we're reminding everyone that any day is a good day to ask, "Are you okay?" and support those who may be struggling. A conversation c...an change a life and asking someone if they are alright is a great place to start. Four ways you can open up a good conversation is to: Ask, listen, encourage action and then check in. You can read more about 'R U OK? Day' here: https://www.ruok.org.au/

12.01.2022 One in four of us will have a stroke in our lifetime (yes you read that right). That means it's even more important for us to be able to recognise the signs of ...a stroke, as it could help save a life. Just remember to check for these four signs and always call Triple 000 in the event of an emergency: Face: is the patient's face drooping? Arms: can the patient lift both arms? Speech: is the patient's speech slurred or comprehensible? Can they understand you? Time: every second counts, call Triple 000 immediately if you suspect a patient is suffering from a stroke. Learn more this National Stroke Week by visiting Stroke Foundation.

09.01.2022 THIRD DEFIBRILLATOR FOR KALBARRI NATIONAL PARK A defibrillator is now located at Kalbarri's new Skywalk, outside of the Cafe. This AED was donated by St John Ambulance Kalbarri Sub Centre. Many thanks to the Calm Rangers for mounting it.... AED's are also located at the Z Bend car park and Natures Window car park.

09.01.2022 Rural road fatalities contributed to two thirds of last year's national road toll. According to the Australian Road Safety Foundation, speed is the number one d...riving issue on WA regional roads, with distraction and fatigue not far behind. 835 drivers tragically lost their lives last year, on regional roads across Australia. While it may be tempting to drive at high speeds, check your phone or operate your vehicle when fatigued, it is not worth your life. Please be mindful on our roads, and remember to enjoy the ride, safely.

06.01.2022 Sunday training at Jakes Beach gave the crew a good opportunity to fine tune their skills outside of the classroom! Training involved practising the retrieval of an injured surfer from the point and learning the access points and options available should the need arise.

06.01.2022 No matter where you are, we're here for you... but it helps if we know exactly where you are first. If you call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance, the first qu...estion you are asked is "What is the address of the emergency?" In order for us to get help to you as quickly as possible, please ensure you are providing us with the correct address. Describing nearby landmarks with identifying features will help too. In the event that you don't know where you are, you can always use the First Responder app. Our app can geo-locate you and identify your latitude and longitude coordinates. You can even call Triple Zero through the app as well. Please note you will need access to 3G/4G to use this feature. Learn more about the First Responder app here: stjohnwa.com.au/online-resources/st-john-first-responder-app

06.01.2022 After completing first aid training, most individuals feel confident in being able to perform CPR, if required in a medical emergency. What we have identified, ...is that not many know how to recognise the signs of a sudden cardiac arrest and when to start pushing on a patient's chest. Resuscitation Improvement Coordinator, Dan Rose has offered his expertise and shown us how we can recognise the signs of sudden cardiac arrest, more efficiently.

06.01.2022 FIRST AID TRAINING TO RECOMMENCE We are pleased to advise that first aid courses will be re commencing at the Kalbarri Sub Centre. If you would like more information or to enrol in a course, please contact the Kalbarri Sub Centre on 9937 2159 or email [email protected].

05.01.2022 In the movies, you often see the patient jump out of their skin when a defib is applied to their chest. This is a total dramatisation! It's not how defibs work, so we've put together this handy tutorial to show you how easy (and safe) it is to use a defibrillator.

03.01.2022 A very big thank you to the Ralph family of Kalbarri Rock Lobster Tours and Charters for bringing in fresh fish for our ambulance volunteers which was kindly donated by Chris and Cirien. The crew are looking forward to having this for dinner on Thursday night after training!

02.01.2022 Upcoming first aid courses at the Kalbarri Sub Centre. Courses are FREE for Kalbarri residents. For more information or to enrol please contact us on 9937 2159 or email: [email protected]
