Since His Grace Bishop Emilianos ...became the Chancellor of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia in 2019, the leadership of the Choir has been taken over by Mr Ioan Ancuta, who diligently and humbly teaches the members of the Choir the Byzantine language of chanting and prepares them for all upcoming liturgies of the Monastery as well as ecclesiastical events of the Archdiocese in Perth. The Choir is accepting new students. For more information, please contact the current Abbot of St John Monastery, Fr Prodromos at [email protected]

21.01.2022 In our season one finale of Season One of Truth Seekers, Sara once again joins His Grace Bishop Emilianos of Meloa to discuss the question ‘What do Christians b...elieve happens after death?’ Here’s what they cover in this conversation: Preparing for life after death. What do the saints have to say about the next life? Experiencing Heaven while on earth. God takes us at the perfect time. These questions were anonymously sent in by young Orthodox Christians. 20.01.2022 Memorial Service for the Great Benefactors of Castellorizo: Loukas and Anastasia Santrape On Sunday 18 October at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helene i...n Perth a Memorial Service was organised by the Castellorizian Association of Western Australia for the repose of the souls of Loukas and Anastasia Santrape, the Great Benefactors of Castellorizo. His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyaneon, representing His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, presided at the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy and the Memorial Service assisted by the Parish Priest, Fr Terry Gerovasilis, together with Deacon Athanasios Athanasiadis. Such was the multitude of theIr philanthropic works on the Island of Castellorizo that it is specified in the constitutions of many Castellorizian Associations throughout the world, that Louka and Anastasia Santrape are remembered in prayers annually, on the Feast day of the Apostle Luke on the 18th of October. Loukas Santrape (1852- 1944) was a wealthy Castellorizian who resided for most of his life, with his wife, Anastasia, in Cairo, Egypt. The philanthropic couple used their good fortune in business to assist many but, never forgetting the inhabitants of their beloved Castellorizo, providing specifically for their compatriots’ religious and educational needs. The Santrape benefactors provided the necessary funds for the building of a new school, the Santrapeia Astiki Scholi(referred to as to Skolio tou Santrape) on the site of an earlier edifice. Initially, this was a male institution located near the Cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helene on Castellorizo, in the area known as Horafia. It was built in a neo-classical style, resembling the University of Athens. At it’s opening in late 1903, it catered for 308 boys and 8 teachers, complementing the nearby Parthenagogion (Girls’ school) which was the work of the then Mayor of Castellorizo, Theodosis Penglis. Santrape also provided the necessary funds for the building in 1906 of the nearby church of St GeorgeAgios Georgios tou Horafiou (also known as Agios Georgios tou Louka), on the foundations of an earlier church of St George, originally consecrated in 1637. The new church was designed by the Samian architect, Panos Diakostamatis, in a late Byzantine style, but was never completed due to worsening economic conditions after 1908. It is pleasing to learn of the current endeavours of the Greek Government to restore church buildings of yesteryear with the provision of funds. The restoration of St George at Horafia has already commenced, following the completion of works at St George of the Well on the waterfront. In the church, St George tou Louka / Horafiou, noteworthy is the church’s magnificent marble temblo (iconostasion) and the bishop’s throne, also made of marble. Outside the church lies a fenced memorial to Loukas and Anastasia Santrape. At the end of the service, His Grace conveyed to all the faithful the blessings and paternal love of our spiritual father, Archbishop Makarios, and informed all of His Eminence’s return to Australia after being in Constantinople.

17.01.2022 Former Pentecostals Embrace Orthodoxy in WA The Parish of Saint Nektarios in Perth recently witnessed the entry into the Orthodox Faith of Panayiotis (Babith) a...nd Anna (Abi). This married couple, coming from a Pentecostal background, were catechised by Father John Athanasiou, and after undergoing rigourous preparation were found to be ready to be baptised into the Orthodox Church. The Sacrament of Baptism was presided over by His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyaneon who on behalf of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, welcomed the couple into the church. The mystery of baptism was carefully explained by His Grace to the edification of all. At the conclusion of the ceremony all present were treated to excellent examples of Indian cuisine which allowed the newly illuminated couple to celebrate the cooking from their homeland. Panayiotis and Anna have two young children, who were recently baptised into the Orthodox Church and were given the names of Vasilios and Ioanna. The day after their baptism, the couple were then married at the Church of Saint Nektarios. After the service all were treated to a Greek smorgasbord at the home of the Matron of Honour (Koumbara). May God continue to bless the journey of this family into the Orthodox Faith.

16.01.2022 A GREAT AND JOYOUS DAY At the Parish of Evangelismos in Perth Western Australia, 5 adults were recently baptised into the Orthodox Faith. His Grace Bishop Elpi...dios of Kyaneon presided over the baptism services and was assisted by the Parish Priest, Fr Emmanuel Stamatiou. Following their Baptism & Chrismation and having participated in the Sacrament of Confession all the newly enlightened received the Sacrament of Holy Communion. All the newly enlightened underwent a thorough two year catechism course with Fr Emmanuel. The newly baptised received the names Stefanos, Irini, Agapitos, Mihaela and Kassiani. Following the sacrament of Baptism the families, friends and parishioners along with the Clergy enjoyed a lunch in the Church Hall in a blessed, holy and joyous atmosphere. This was then followed with the Sacrament of Marriage for the two couples Stefanos & Irini and Agapitos & Mihaela. During the service, His Grace stated, today marks a special moment since all five have officially entered the Orthodox Church through the Sacrament of Baptism and all are experiencing a personal Pentecost through the Sacrament of Chrismation since each have received the Holy Spirit. Finally His Grace conveyed to all the blessings and paternal love of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios. There is a great interest in the Orthodox Faith and if we are ready to receive those knocking on our door they will renew the fervour of faith with those baptised in the Church as infants bringing new life and energy to the whole Body of the Church by the Grace of God.

16.01.2022 Gradution Doxology Service for St Andrew’s Grammar Year 12 Students On Thursday the 22nd of October, His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyaneon, conducted a Doxolog...y Service to mark the graduation of the Year 12 Class from St Andrew’s Grammar. The doxology took place at the Church of Sts Constantine and Helene in Northbridge in the presence of the Year 12 cohort, their families, other students and the school staff. His Grace was assisted in the Doxology Service by the Parish Priest of the Church of Saints Constantine and Helene, Fr Terry Gerovasilis, and the Chaplain of the school Fr Milorad Soaktar. His Grace conveyed to all the Year 12 school leavers the paternal blessing and best wishes of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia. His Grace passed on to the students the paternal words of advice given by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios in His message for all graduating Yr 12 students in 2020: Be strong and courageous. Do not fear for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. I want to convey these words from the Old Testament to you along with my blessing and best wishes for your final exams that you will be starting very shortly. This has been a very disruptive year with the restrictions imposed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, be mindful that it is our Lord, Jesus Christ, who is the One governing our lives as long as we turn to Him and ask for His help. So, do not be afraid. There is no room for fear for the people of God. We have a loving Father and a caring Mother the Panagia (mother of God). Pray to them and ask them to be with you.Do your best; aim high and study hard. But as your Archbishop and Spiritual Father, I want to remind you that the most important measure of success is how close we are to God.Without Him, all the worldly accomplishments mean nothing. Only what lasts for eternity has substance and can make a difference and can transform our everyday lives and that of those around us. Keep God in the equation of your life and in your relationships. Be courageous and confident in the challenge that is set before you. I, (Archbishop Makarios) wholeheartedly extend my support and my own prayers for your success; success for your exams; but, also, success in the choices that you make regarding your personal relationship with God. . May God strengthen and bless all of you. His Grace also provided his own words of advice for the students, saying, I am sure many of you will be in a leading position in the future; and if you remember to treat everyone with dignity then you can never go wrong. For every human being is a creation of God and we are expected to show respect, understanding and love to all human beings who are the pinnacle of God’s creation. Once we learn to do this then we leave no room for exploitation, subordination and discrimination. In particular, His Grace passed on his congratulations and best wishes to the Principal of the school, Mr Craig Monaghan, who will be finishing up in his role with the school at the end of the year. St Andrew’s Grammar was founded in 1991 by the Hellenic Community of WA and is the only Greek Orthodox Day School in Western Australia.

12.01.2022 ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS MESSAGE FOR THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF OXI DAY. The heroic NO of October 28, 1940, is flanked with pride, gratitude and responsibility. These... three words which echo through our ears only to travel to our thoughts, overwhelm our very existence today. We stand with pride because 80 years ago the small and poor nation of Greece stood up to the mighty war weapons of fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, only to become an example of heroism and self-sacrifice for all the peoples of the world. Reflecting on this spirit of self-sacrifice and strength with which our ancestors fought for our Faith and Homeland, we bow with respect to their memory and express our deepest gratitude. Without their struggle, none of what we enjoy today would be possible. At the same time, we give praise and show gratitude to the Blessed Theotokos for the protection and comfort she gave to the struggle of the Greeks during the epic of 1940. Today's anniversary, which coincides with the feast of Her Holy Protection is another reminder to all that in the critical moments of history, the Blessed Theotokos with Her grace fortified and sheltered the Nation of Greece. As we can appreciate, we have a sacred obligation and responsibility to pass this legacy which was given to us by our ancestors, to the generations that will follow. It is not just dates, names, and "bare" information that our young people need to memorise. Above all, it is the ideals and values of our Nation and Faith, which prompted our ancestors with solidarity to resist heroically and willingly, sacrificing even their lives. It would be an omission if we forgot that the Epic of 1940 and World War II as a whole, were a historical circumstance in which the bonds of friendship between Greeks and Australians were further strengthened after they fought together on the same side of history. With these thoughts, on behalf of their Graces our Assistant Bishops, together with the holy clergy, the monastics and honest people of our Holy Archdiocese, I wish all Greek women and men everywhere around the world, many blessed years sheltered by the Holy Spirit!

11.01.2022 Throughout your whole life, you cannot find better help than the Jesus Prayer, because this prayer calls and uses the name of Jesus Christ, who gives you His energy. So, when you mention Jesus’ name, you use Jesus as your own instrument. Elder Aimilianos of Simonopetra

10.01.2022 Details about the upcoming feast day of Archangels Michael and Gabriel in Geraldton - Sat 7 / Sun 8 Nov.

09.01.2022 Elder Ephraim of Arizona: Blessed children of the All-Holy God, My greetings and wishes for your good health,... I am sorry I am bothering you again with my illiteracy, myself the unworthy. I only wanted to plead with you, out of paternal love, to beg or entreat God by calling Him to help you. Because our Heavenly Father really looks forward to this begging or entreating, as He is always ready to visit us and to give us His golden heart or to unite it with our own sinful heart. Because of this, I beg you, ask Him, ask Him to gift you His sweet Name, which fills our dead heart with Heavenly Life and Peace."

09.01.2022 The sinners are in the Church also. The sinners too? Of course, the sinners too. God never shuts them out. He keeps them within His body until the very last moment, tied to Him, so that they don’t ever despair at all, and the despair doesn’t overwhelm them, and they don’t lose their crown. You too, who are a sinner, says Christ, are my child, part of my body. Have courage then, my child, in your struggle and you will triumph! If you want, I’ll give you even more grace and... in the end we will find ourselves in heaven together. . . . The Church is the Body of Christ. This means that all of us, since we all belong to the body of the Church, are no longer independent bodies, but are members of hers. I am one hand, you the other. You are an eye, he the other. Each of us is one member (1 Cor 12:14-18). Therefore we must not look at another with indifference and coldly, but with tender-hearted love. My hand hurts? I will suffer. That is, we are to see the other people as our hand. We are to love them. Elder Aimilianos of Simonopetra, may his memory be eternal

09.01.2022 Announcement from the Archdiocesan Council of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia The Archdiocesan Council of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia met yesterday, 29...th September 2020, in Sydney, under the Presidency of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia and dealt with the issues on the agenda. After extensive deliberations, the members of the Archdiocesan Council unanimously resolved upon and hereby announce the following: 1. Firstly, we praise the Triune God and express our gratitude and our deepest respect to His All-Holiness our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Mother Church for the election of our new Archbishop of Australia, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios. Moreover, we were moved to learn that His Eminence has been invited to be a member of the Holy and Sacred Synod, a first in the history of our local Church. 2. It is a fact that within a year, our new Shepherd, despite the adversities of the devastating fires and the COVID-19 pandemic, has proven to be a dynamic presence throughout the entire continent. We are aligned with, and fully embrace, the vision of our new Archbishop, which is based on unity and love, so that, together, we may make the Archdiocese of Australia a more formidable force in Australian society. Within this spirit of unity and reconciliation, we thank our Ecumenical Patriarchate for the restoration of His Grace Bishop Paul of Christianoupolis and the priests, Fr George Athanasiadis and Fr Christodoulos Vassilaris, who are now members of the clergy of the Archdiocese of Australia. 3. We also express our deep gratitude to our Ecumenical Patriarch and our Archbishop for the election of our new and worthy Bishop Emilianos of Meloa, Bishop Elpidios of Kyaneon and Bishop Silouan of Sinope, who have already assumed executive positions within the Holy Archdiocese, and we consider the creation by His Eminence of separate Archdiocesan Districts in Perth, Northcote and Canberra to be beneficial in effectively dealing with the administrative and spiritual issues in those areas. 4. We gladly accept our Archbishop’s proposal for the regular convening of the Archdiocesan Council, as defined by the Special Regulations of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia. It should be noted that today’s convening of the Archdiocesan Council was set during the meeting of the Bishops of our Archdiocese on 7th August of this year; the previous sittings of the Archdiocesan Council had met were in 2015 and in 2012. 5. The Clergy-Laity Conference of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia was due to take place next January. However, due to the restrictions of the pandemic, the local authorities have advised us to postpone its convocation. We therefore decided to reschedule the commencement of the event to 30th May 2021, as long as we are free from the restrictions of the pandemic. The theme of the Clergy-Laity Conference will be For Faith and Nation. Also, the National Youth Conference will begin on 24th September 2021. For these two major events, the Archdiocesan Council will convene again soon and relevant details will be announced in due course. 6. In a spirit of unity, a National Committee was established by His Eminence to celebrate the Bicentenary of the beginning of the Greek Revolution (1821-2021). The National Committee is working with great fervour and a rich program of events for the whole country will soon be announced. The Archdiocesan Council approved the proposal of the Committee and that of the Archbishop for the minting of a commemorative coin and the printing of an anniversary stamp. 7. With deep pain, we experienced the consequences of the pandemic in Victoria and especially at our St Basil’s Aged Care facility in Melbourne. We all share in the pain of the relatives of the victims. We are praying for the repose of their souls, while proceeding with a restructuring of the organisation. At the same time, we wish the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of St Basil’s in Melbourne, the Very Reverend Archimandrite Father Evmenios Vasilopoulos, every success, as well as to the new CEO of St Basil’s in NSW and the ACT, Mr Spiro Stavis. 8. The Archdiocesan Council accepted responsibility for not providing an official residence for the incumbent Archbishop, as there is for each Hierarch all over the world. The small lodgings adjoining the Archbishop’s office are completely unsuitable as a permanent residence of any person, let alone for the leader of our Church in Australia. The purchase of an apartment by the Consolidated Trust, with all due process, provides an asset of the Archdiocese, and not His Eminence. To this day, the Archbishop continues to reside in the Archdiocese. It is our respectful decision and our request that the Archbishop should occupy the apartment until the completion of the renovations of the Archdiocese, in which a residence for the serving Archbishop will be incorporated. 9. Finally, with great disappointment we note the continuing hostile conduct of Mr Nicholas Kalliouris and Mrs Vasso Morali, former journalist, and both residents of Greece, as well as other non-institutional and para-ecclesiastical elements against the Archdiocese, St Basil’s Aged Care and our Archbishop personally. We agree with the position of His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Sevasteia that their publications are blasphemous lies. With abhorrence, we condemn what they have written and inform the faithful that they have all been referred to the justice system. We assure everyone that His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, as well as the Archdiocese with its benevolent institutions, will not be blackmailed or influenced in their decisions by their malicious conduct and their defamatory publications.

07.01.2022 Saint James Liturgy - a wonderful experience as we traveled back to the First Century The Divine Liturgy of Saint James, which was written by Saint James the b...rother of our Lord and the first bishop of Jerusalem, was celebrated for the very first time in Perth at the Church of Saint Nektarios. His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyaneon presided over the liturgy assisted by the clergy of Western Australia. The Archdiocese Choir of Perth chanted at the three and a half hour service and a large number of the faithful attended from all over Perth. During the sermon, His Grace outlined the characteristics of the Liturgy of Saint James and reminded all that the basic core essence of all Liturgies is the changing of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ and the communing of the faithful. The Liturgy of Saint James is celebrated twice a year: on the 23rd of October, which is the feast day of the saint, as well as on the first Sunday after Christmas. The Liturgy of Saint James gave us the opportunity to see how the faithful in the early church worshipped God and how the present Divine Liturgies of Saint John Chrysostom and Saint Basil the Great evolved.

07.01.2022 In our eleventh episode of Truth Seekers, Tas once again joins His Grace Bishop Emilianos of Meloa to discuss the question ‘How do you find a way to spread the ...Word of God to those who don’t want to hear it and how do you find the right setting? For example, in a workplace it might be inappropriate or you may not have enough time to even get into religion with colleagues.’ Here’s what they cover in this conversation: Setting an example through our actions and attitude. The art of ‘you do you, I’ll do me.’ What to do if your workmates or boss doesn’t respect your faith. Striving for martyrdom in the modern workplace. 02.01.2022 The Archdiocesan District of Perth Organises a Fun Day for Children On Monday 5 October, with the blessing of His Grace Bishop Elpidios of Kyaneon, a Children’s... School Holiday event was hosted at the Parish of Saint Nektarios in Perth, WA. The event was organised by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia Archdiocesan District of Perth, and brought together children of all ages from all of the parishes and monastery of Perth. The event was well attended by over 60 children with many more parents and grandparents also in attendance. The day began with an English Divine Liturgy conducted by the Parish Priest of the Church of Saint Nektarios, Fr John Athansiou, together with Fr Terry Gerovasilis, Parish Priest of the Church of Saints Constantine and Helene. Fr Terry spoke in his sermon to the children about the need to fulfil Christ’s commandment to love one another as we love ourselves by sharing our blessings and belongings with all those around us. The children also learned how to make koliva (memorial wheat) and the importance of praying for our loved ones who have fallen asleep. With the koliva that the children helped prepare, His Grace Bishop Elpidios then conducted a Trisagion Service inside the church and explained to all the meaning of this very special service. In the afternoon, His Grace, assisted by Father Terry, spoke to the children about the vestments and other church articles used by the priests and bishops in the church. Father John spoke to the children about the life of Saint Nektarios. The children were also given the opportunity to prepare their own pizza while enjoying each other’s company. Finally, the day concluded with prayer by all the children in the church after which they all received an icon and blessing from His Grace. Prior to leaving for the day all children received a special treat which included ice cream. Overall, the event was a fantastic success with all the children enjoying physical activities such as soccer, sharing fellowship with one another and learning more about the Church and our orthodox faith.
