19.01.2022 COVID-19 Update . Western Australians will enjoy the easing of COVID-19 restrictions for social gathering and leisure activities from Monday, 18 May. You can h...elp keep all Western Australians safe while we continue our fight against this virus by staying at least about 1.5m to 2m apart while socialising. In an emergency, our paramedics will ask you to stay 2 metres from the doorway while they ask a few questions to assess what personal protective equipment if any is required. Please do not approach our crews and be truthful about your symptoms. Thank you for helping keep our staff and volunteers safe. 19.01.2022 Happy St Johns Day! Today we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist, born on 24 June over 2,000 years ago. It is after him our worldwide Order is named ...and in whose name we serve. Did you know many countries celebrate this day in a number of ways, including: In Norway as elsewhere in Scandinavian countries, St Johns Day is celebrated with a communal bonfire. The event is also known as Jonsok, meaning "wake of Saint John". In Puerto Rico a night-long celebration, called "La Noche de San Juan" is held. After sunset, people travel to a beach or any accessible body of water (e.g. river, lake or even bathtub) and, at midnight, fall backwards into it three, seven or twelve times. This is done to cleanse the body from bad luck and give good luck for the following year. In Sweden a Saint Johns Eve custom involves people visiting holy springs as "a reminder of how John the Baptist baptised Christ in the River Jordan." It is the biggest holiday of the year in Sweden, feasting the whole day and night is common. In Portugal there are St Johns street parties in many cities, towns and villages, mainly between the evening on the 23rd and the actual St.Johns Day on the 24th of June. St Johns night in the city of Porto is considered by several guides as one of the best parties in the world! The Brazilian celebration is called Festas de So Joo. Since Northeastern Brazil is largely arid or semi-arid, these festivals not only coincide with the end of the rainy seasons of most states in the northeast, but they also provide people with an opportunity to give thanks to Saint John for the rain. They also celebrate rural life and feature typical clothing, food, and dance. When Christianity came to Lithuania, it brought with it the celebration of Saint Johns Day. While Christians celebrate Jonins (St. Johns) in the local language, Lithuanians with the names Jonas, Jon, Janina receive many greetings from their family, relatives and friends.

18.01.2022 When our mascot Kura the Bear said her American cousin knows CPR, we were stunned! Turns out this grizzly bear thinks CPR applies to inanimate objects too... on... the plus side her depth, rate and release are pretty good! When performing CPR on a patient, ensure you complete 30 chest compressions to 2 breaths. You can practice on a bin if you like, but wed much prefer you come and practice on one of our CPR mannequins instead (way more hygienic too!). Video owned by: Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Centre, Montana.

13.01.2022 There is no denying that there are some great people that come from our Great Southern region! Cristen Peacock has been a volunteer down in St John WA - Jerramu...ngup for the past 13 years and has seen a lot since she started volunteeting at age 24. Her most memorable experience was having to help her very own daughter after she suffered from a snakebite. "...Its not something I wish on any parent knowing you are two hours away from anti-venom and your child has been bitten by a deadly snake..." The horse was going nuts next to her, so I think he sensed the snake and that something was wrong. He was nudging her, Cristen said. Her daughter has since made a full recovery. Being a volunteer isnt an easy job but it is incredibly rewarding. Cristen told us she loves helping people and being there in their time of need. She also enjoys teaching first aid and equipping students to help others too. So whats next for Cristen? She looks forward to continuing on her volunteering journey, helping as many people as she can. St John WA - Great Southern

13.01.2022 At times like this we need you, the community, to know we are here for you. When calling for an Ambulance, you will be asked by the Triple 000 call taker if you... have flu-like symptoms. When our crews arrive, they will ask you the same questions. Please dont be scared to answer truthfully, even if you think you just have a mild cold. We will still turn up, and we will still treat you! We have strict hygiene measures in place to keep you and our crews safe. As part of our standard procedure during COVID-19, and to ensure our patients receive the best and most appropriate pre-hospital care, our crews will be asking all patients if they have any flu like symptoms. This is to protect our amazing Paramedics, Volunteers and our Great Southern region against the spread of any potentially infectious illness including COVID-19. Our goal is to help our community stay safe and stop the spread - but we cant do that without you, our resilient and fantastic communities, behind us. Stay safe The SJA Great Southern Team

06.01.2022 Most of us are familiar with the Rescue Anne CPR mannequins used in our first aid courses, but do you know the lady youve been placing your lips on? LInconnue... de la Seine (the unknown woman of the Seine), has an interesting story that has been shrouded in mystery for around 150 years. The legend depicts a young woman who mysteriously washed up one day in the Seine. After being discovered, she was transported to the Paris morgue and put on public display, for the purpose of identification. No one was able to identify her, but the public was surprised by her gentle smile, even in death. An attendant at the morgue was apparently so transfixed by her beauty, he created a cast of her face, so he may capture it forever. This inspired a series of masks to populate around Europe in appreciation of her Mona Lisa smile. Many years later, toy manufacturer, Asmund Laerdal was approached to help develop a doll to demonstrate CPR. He drew inspiration from LInconnue de la Seine, as he remembered her serene face hanging in the form of a mask at his in-laws house. The CPR mannequins we use today has the same face that belonged to this unknown individual. Many versions of the story have surfaced over the years, but this one seems to paint the most detailed picture. LInconnue de la Seine is now known as the Most Kissed Girl in History.
