18.01.2022 Spring clean your first aid kit Spring brings the return of warm days, outdoor activities, and renovation. It’s a good moment to Review, Replenish, Replace & Refresh your Safety Assets. Among the most important things to review are your First Aid Kits. This is a priority since accessibility, cleanliness and can make a difference in response time when an emergency happens. To clean and organise First Aid Kits, start by assessing the current conditions of your existing kits f...ollowing these five simple steps: 1. Re-assess risks and what you need your kits for. Consider changing the size or type of the first aid kit if the activities and associated risks have changed 2. Re-assess the number of people this kit should be serving and update if necessary 3. Check the expiry dates of products or every module, if you have a Modular First Aid Kit, and replace any which have expired 4. Check the medical instruments (scissors, tweezers, etc) making sure they function and are clean and sanitised 5. Re-evaluate the location of your First Aid Kits. Is it in a cool, dry place out of the reach of children but also accessible and close to running water? 6. Check the status of the outer container for your First Aid Kits. It is in good condition or does it need to be replaced? It is clean? Containers for First Aid Kits should be dust-proof and water-resistant to maintain in good condition their contents. Then, proceed to the cleaning process: 1. Take out all the components of the kit 2. Check the all components match the required inventory list 3. Clean and disinfect the outer container of the kit 4. Clean ad disinfect the medical instruments 5. Replace opened, used, expired or damaged products 6. Replenish missing products 7. Write down the cleaning date and schedule the next cleaning Finally, it is normally recommended to have First Aid Kits ready in several places, and serving different purposes, for example in your home, car, or on travel. At work, you will want to consider them in various areas, such as the office, lunchroom, warehouse etc.

16.01.2022 Hi all, Due to recent advice from St John senior management it has been decided not to meet for training for the next two weeks from concerns of the coronavirus. Whilst we understand alot of us use this time for social interaction and networking with colleagues and friends it is with the utmost concern for member welfare that we take into consideration all safety aspects for the division. In the coming days online training links and passwords will be posted it is with hope th...at you can use the next two Wednesday nights to complete the online training modules. Alot of our duties are cancelled or postponed for the time being however updated duty sheets will still be provided for the events still going ahead. We would really appreciate any time you can give to these still active duties. We also ask that although the risk of cornonavirus transmission is low if you see someone in need whilst off duty that you still use your skills to help members of the public with any first aid issues they need assistance with. Remember "be alert... not alarmed" The division management team will still be available for contact should any concerns arise over the next few weeks. See you all soon, Scotty.

11.01.2022 On a quiet Saturday afternoon, St John volunteer Claire was driving down a winding country road heading out for a picnic with friends, when she noticed a passing motorcyclist waving her down. As she rounded the bend, five cars were stopped in the middle of the road with a pedestrian walking through them looking for someone, anyone, to help. As she got out of her car and approached the scene Claire realised a rider had been thrown from his motorbike and was lying unmoving on ...the road. Standing next to him, was the riders dad - a beautiful Saturday afternoon ride had ended abruptly. Claire started a full assessment, gradually the rider started to regain consciousness and was able to tell her, his name was Sam. Claire continued to assess Sam for other injuries, immobilised his head and tried to determine the cause of his pain while securing Sam so he wouldn’t sit up or roll over. Sam was struggling to breath and becoming agitated, Claire continued to talk to him while she bandaged the laceration on his leg, then held his head and tried to keep him calm while they waited. Finally, they heard the first ambulance arrive, then another. Claire gave a handover to the team while they assessed Sam and helped them move him onto the spinal board. Sam was given blood, sedated and intubated. Claire stepped back to comfort Joshua, Sam’s father, as he was incredibly distressed after witnessing the whole ordeal. Claire’s care for others didn’t stop there, she could see Joshua was too devastated to ride his motorbike, so she drove him to the hospital and made sure that he connected with his wife. Claire kept in contact with Sam and Joshua and caught up with them once Sam returned home. Thankfully Sam survived the accident, the emergency surgery, ruptured spleen, fractured skull, ribs, collarbone An incredible story, thank you for sharing it with us Claire but more importantly thank you for being an inspiration to us all and showing us yet again how important our skills are to the whole community. Everyone please drive safely and have a fabulous week. Thanks,

07.01.2022 BEEN RAINING? LOOK OUT FOR FUNNEL WEB SPIDERS Funnel web spiders are a big black spider which like to burrow under rocks, around rotting logs and are often liv...ing hidden away in gardens. Heavy rain often washes FWS out of their hiding places so always be on the alert especially when gardening or digging. The funnel web spider in this photo was found recently in my backyard in Sydney! FWS have a very poisonous and fast-acting venom and quick action can be life-saving. If anyone is bitten by a big black spider always call 000 immediately. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to the affected limb and stay still until the ambulance arrives. Call the Poisons Centre on 131126 for further advice or information. #poisonsinfo #funnelwebspiders #bigblackspiders See more

03.01.2022 In the wake of supermarket shelves being cleared of toilet paper and other sanitation items, remember to only ever flush the Three P’s pee, poo and (toilet) paper Other products such as paper towel, tissues and wet wipes do not break down properly and can contribute to large blockages in our wastewater system.

Rural Road Safety Month is a reminder that whether you’re a local or a visitor, you need to take extra care on country roads. #RuralRoadSafetyMonth #ChooseRoadSafety #StaySafe #DoingOurPart
