25.01.2022 As the weather starts to warm up again in Queensland, it's an ideal time to learn or refresh your CPR skills. 25.01.2022 Did you know that it's Queensland Mental Health Week? Life can be tough and it's often our mental health that suffers as a result, but would you know the signs if someone you know was suffering? There are often very subtle indicators, and often no indicators at all. At St John Qld, we offer a First Aid for the Mind course, a one day course provides participants with information on common mental illnesses, including depression and anxiety, as well as post-traumatic stress, su...icidal thoughts and psychosis. For more information, please follow the link, or contact the Training Team at St John Qld on 1300 785 646. https://www.stjohnqld.com.au//Menta/First-aid-for-the-mind

24.01.2022 Today is the UN International Day of Tolerance. Tolerance is something that is taught from a very young age, and having tolerance for those around us, and respecting their views and opinions is an essential part of living in a peaceful society. We are extremely fortunate in Australia to have, in the most part, a tolerant society, but there is still much that can be done. At St John, we aim to live by our values of Integrity, Respect, Care, Dedication and Compassion - all ch...aracteristics that encourage a more tolerant and respectful world. What can you do today to be more tolerant?

21.01.2022 Have you ever considered volunteering some of your time to your community? This has been a tough year for our volunteers at St John as we adapted to a new model of volunteering throughout COVID-19. While the world seemed chaotic at the peak, our dedicated volunteers were doing all they can to keep supporting our communities in Queensland. Sometimes, our volunteers are the only connection that clients have outside of their home, and this connection is everything. The contrib...utions that our volunteers make is significant. But don't just take our word for it. Brodie, a Community Visitors Scheme Volunteer said, "We would chat and laugh together, tell stories and jokes, tell each other our plans for the week. It’s a very rewarding experience". If you'd like to get involved, reach out to our team at 1300 ST JOHN (785 646).

With the greatest respect to our First Nations people, and with gratitude for the rich culture that they continue to share.

12.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day, and although it may look a little different due to COVID-19, we are still called to acknowledge the significance of the day. RSL Queensland asks us "to commit to pausing for just one minute to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country, those who returned home injured or ill, and those who bravely serve our country today". At 11am on the 11/11, and always...... We Remember.

It’s a time to promote togetherness around the world, awareness of the problems children face in every corner of the globe, and improve the welfare for all children. At St John Qld we offer our free First Aid in Schools program to primary schools, empowering children with the skills to be ab...le to administer vital first aid in an emergency. https://www.stjohnqld.com.au/communit/first-aid-in-schools/

10.01.2022 We've all heard the saying, "You are what you eat" but do you believe it to be true? Science says YES! There is significant research which shows that what you eat can play a big role on your physical and mental wellness. We can all relate to those times when you're feeling stressed and pick up a bar of chocolate, or enjoy a glass of wine... no judgement here!, but studies show that a diet high in vegetables and fruit would be a better choice! We'd love to know, what do you do to support your mental wellness?

10.01.2022 Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW) begins tomorrow (October 10) with Mental Health Day. This year, the theme for QMHW is 'Take Time', and encourages us to tak...e the time to think about our mental health and wellbeing. With COVID, the lines between work and home life have become a bit blurred for many, and this is a good opportunity to really look at little changes you may be able to make to take the time you need to stay well, physically and mentally. Over the next week at St John Qld, we will be focusing our social media on ways that you can #taketime and how we can help. Make sure you follow us on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/stjohnambulanceqld) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/StJohnQld) to keep updated. 09.01.2022 With the new school year well and truly underway, our First Aid in Schools (FAiS) team are busily planning for the year ahead. So, you may ask, what is First Aid in Schools? FAis is one of our charitable programs that we offer to the community. ... Children are frequently the first at the scene of an incident, and are often required to act when no adult is available to assist. With research showing that primary school aged children are able to perform first aid and place an emergency call, it seems logical that our children are trained in basic first aid. And the best bit is... the children love it! It gives them a sense of pride and confidence to know that they are able to help. First Aid in Schools is currently offered in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and the Gold Coast. If you would like for your school to become involved, please contact our FAiS team at [email protected] to register.

08.01.2022 Without a doubt, our emergency services and emergency response organisations are the backbone of a community in times of disaster. Here in Queensland, fires, floods and cyclones are a common part of the summer season, and this can take a toll on those who keep us safe. At St John Ambulance Queensland, we are proud to offer a FREE ONE DAY SEMINAR, BETTER MENTAL HEALTH - DISASTER AND RECOVERY, that works towards building resilience among community members, and to help them ide...ntify and provide support to those who may be suffering common mental health problems which may result from the trauma associated with natural disasters. This course can be offered face to face, or over webinar, and is perfect for teams, such as SES, city councils, first responders and any other community groups who deal with disaster planning. We have been running this course for some time and the feedback has been so positive. The course was great, it dealt with relevant issues and I feel well prepared to help anyone in crisis. If you would like to know more, or would like speak with our team about booking in a course, call 1300 ST JOHN (785 646) or email [email protected].

07.01.2022 Last week, our Training team were invited to attend the @buddyupaustralia event for Queensland Mental Health Week. Buddy Up Australia offers a way for people who have served their country, either domestically or overseas, to connect with like-minded people and feel that sense of purpose again (Buddy Up website). They are an asset to the community and we were very proud to be at the event. David and Trish took the opportunity to meet people from other community organisations... who are also doing great work, especially in a very difficult COVID-19 environment. It's always a good thing to do some networking, but more importantly on this occasion, to share how St John Ambulance Qld can help. 02.01.2022 A community where all people feel included and valued is something that we strive for at St John Ambulance Qld. In this Social Inclusion Week, we look to our clients who empower us to do more and be better in our service delivery, in order to make our services more inclusive for all. Our Community Volunteers Scheme (CVS) takes enthusiastic volunteers and matches them with clients in the community, just to spend time together, completing a puzzle, reading a book, or even cat...ching up on gossip! This connection is everything to the volunteer and the client, and builds community where isolation is often prevalent. Social Inclusion Week aims to connect local communities, in order to build and strengthen relationships and address isolation and exclusion of those who may be marginalised. What are you doing this week to make others in your community feel more connected? 02.01.2022 GONG XI FA CA! Wishing our Chinese friends, colleagues and clients a very Happy Chinese New Year! On this day celebrating the beginning of the Year of the Ox, we thought we'd share some fun facts about Chinese New Year with you. Chinese New Year is actually celebrated by over 20% of the population of the world.... Chinese New Year is not celebrated on a particular day every year, but rather aligns with the Lunar calendar which dictates which date it will be. Children receive money in red envelopes. This money is supposed to help transfer fortune from the elders to the children. They can also be given between bosses and employees, co-workers, and friends. Everything is decorated in red which is the colour of good fortune. And one of these fantastic traditions that we can get behind, dumplings are supposed to be eaten with each meal! Nice! Wherever in the world you are, and whatever nationality you are, it's wonderful to have the opportunity to celebrate a new culture. How lucky are we?
