I revolve still Among persons, give them names, join, bury them. One comes into the world Like a violet, so soft The unseeing eyes. I brush Them with water, the Church's Sublime dew. He grows tall, Absent, but will return Soon with his bride, asking The favour of the candles And music. Always They go, and always The hole in the ground waits. The stone pages go on With their story. God, I Tell them, will read this. Together We mend the edges of Our amens. The planes roar In the sky. Science repeats Its promises. Against times That infect I offer my Priceless inoculation. Vocation, R S Thomas (Uncollected Poems) Peace, Peter+

19.01.2022 Hi, Enough. These few words are enough. If not these words, this breath. If not this breath, this sitting here. This opening to the life... we have refused again and again until now. 15.01.2022 Does the spirit move in our lives?

15.01.2022 Hi, In the current cycle for the Season of Creation today is designated River Sunday. Our worship has been shaped by imagery rich in water symbolism. Moses quenches the peoples thirst with water from the rock I the wilderness. Richard Fay likened the self-emptying (kenosis) that God undergoes in Christ to the gathering flow as a stream descends towards the ocean and becomes a broad river in the process. He also used the image of Eschers perpetual waterfall (pictured in the... attachment) to remind us that a deepening spirituality sees us descending rather than soaring. Laurence Freeman reminds us of the same movement in many of the refelctions we listen to on a Tuesday night. Through meditation we descend into a deeper sense of self-knowledge and in the process deepen our apprcaition of God. We will once again be meeting in person in the Cathedral for our meditation group, 6.45pm to 7.30pm. It is still possible to join the group using Zoom. Please enter via the (North West) door the door with ramp access that enters the Cathedral from the northern (larger) carpark) A Covid-safe meal of soup and bread will also be available from 5.30pm. This will also be offered in the Cathedral. Pre-registration for both the meal and the meditation session is advisable to ensure that we can accommodate you. Please email Julia if you intend to be present in person for the meal and/or the meditation session. The Engaging the Gospel study has now concluded. The next Tuesday evening be the Women in The Bible: The Old Testament study led by The Revd Kate Ross which will commence on 20th October. Details can be found on the Cathedral website and FaceBook page. 07.01.2022 Hi, Jesus’s teaching on the question of finding oneself doesn’t put it just in terms of finding oneself but in following him. This puts a different spin on it. To follow him means what? Say you are driving in two cars somewhere and the first car knows where he is going, you don’t. So they’ll say ‘Just follow me.’ What does that mean? It means there’s trust, trust that they know where they are going. It also means you have to be very careful that you don’t lose the other pers...on, you have to make sure that another car doesn’t come in between you and the car you are following. It’s a small example of what it might mean to follow: to pay attention, to be faithful, to stay connected, to keep going in the spirit of trust or faith. And it means to take the attention off ourselves: ‘Whoever wants to follow me must deny himself’. It sounds very negative, but we can see it in a better light if we see it in the light of meditation taking the attention off ourselves. That is what it means to leave self behind. Laurence Freeman, Loosing Oneself We will once again be meeting ‘in person’ in the Cathedral for our meditation group, 6.45pm to 7.30pm. It is still possible to join the group using Zoom. Please enter via the (North West) door the door with ramp access that enters the Cathedral from the northern (larger) carpark. A Covid-safe meal of soup and bread will also be available from 5.30pm. 05.01.2022 Hi, Moments of great calm, Kneeling before an altar Of wood in a stone church... In summer, waiting for the God To speak; the air a staircase For silence; the sun’s light Ringing me, as though I acted A great rôle. And the audiences Still; all that close throng Of spirits waiting, as I, For the message. Prompt me, God; But not yet. When I speak, Though it be you who speak Through me, something is lost. The meaning is in the waiting. Waiting, R S Thomas On Sunday we entered the Season of Advent. It is the Season with which the Church Year commences. It is a countercultural season in that it asks us to begin this new year by waiting and paying attention, rather than acting. Waiting is something that tends to draw out of us the feeling of impatience: the doctor is running ten minutes late, the delivery is delayed, the must-have item is out-of-stock, the traffic light has turned red. With ‘pay later’ lending we don’t need to wait for that next treasured purchase. Our culture leads us to think that meaning is to be found in the getting, the achieving, and the possessing. R S Thomas suggests that the meaning is in the waiting. It is an Advent idea. Meaning is found in and through being, and ‘to be’ we have to practice being present, to attending, to noticing, and to watching. Many of the readings we use in the early days of Advent invite us to ‘wake up’. In our days it invites us to escape the trance that busyness induces. Peace, Peter+

01.01.2022 What are we feeling today?

01.01.2022 As I see it, a helpful piece of synchronicity sees International Day of Peace (IDP) (21st September) fall within the Season of Creation (September 1 to October 4) . One of the themes The Season of Creation invites us to reflect on is our interrelationship with all that is; that we are part of nature, and not separate from it as our culture tends to suggest. Being part of nature means that we live within and are knitted into the web of life. When one string in the web is pulle...Continue reading
