15.01.2022 Had to share Gill Booysen’s @trustbru_images beautifully written feature on Friends of St John's Cemetery, Parramatta General Committee member BRIAN WICKHAM. Thank you so much Gill for capturing Brian’s passion for this heritage site and all that the cemetery has to offer visitors! ... #Repost via @trustbru_images on Instagram PARRAMATTA WANDERING 08.04.2019 The history and the hidden personal stories behind beautifully handscripted, handhewn tombstones within historic cemeteries have always held a fascination for me. Long-ago enough for my heart so there's no direct relation to Dan, green-grassed St John's sits between flats and businesses, a beautiful, aged red-baked brick wall being the only divide between the quick and the long-dead. The oldest surviving formal European cemetery in Australia, it was just awesome to connect with Parramatta-born Brian Wickham who helps maintain the space and had been there all day. We chatted to sundown; so grateful for the informal history lessons of past-Parramatta he conveyed; he showed me the rectangular, lichen-patterned headstone for Henry Dodd, 'First Fleeter' and convict superintendent who established the first successful wheat crop. Dodd died in January, 1791, apparently following pneumonia caught while chasing errant convicts, and his was the first marked burial place. Brian remembers the sale yards in the middle of Parramatta where 'chooks, hordes of chooks, cattle and horses were bought and sold'. His great, great, great grandmother was the first Postmistress of Parramatta following the death of her husband, the Postmaster - how's that for women's advancement! #history #parramatta #stjohnscemetery #hugegratitude #lovedmeetingbrian #mademyday #thequickandthedead #oldparramatta #grave_affair #cemetery #cemeteryphotography #cemetery_shots #cemeterylovers #taphophiles_only #darktourism #tourism #discovernsw #discoverparramatta #cemetery_nation @tessdodd8089 @discoverparramatta @oldparramatta @stjohnscemeteryproject SUPPORT THE WORK OF THE Friends of St John's Cemetery, Parramatta BY BECOMING A MEMBER AND/OR MAKING A DONATION TODAY. 10.01.2022 It's the Friends of St John's Cemetery, Parramatta's first General Meeting for 2019 today at 2pm-4pm. Check out the full event details below.

09.01.2022 MONTHLY WORKING BEES On the fourth Saturday of each month, the Friends of St John's Cemetery, Parramatta are hosting regular working bees. The idea is that you can come along for as long as you like, help tidy up a particular grave or pick up some litter, all while meeting other members of the organisation. General Committee member Brian Wickham [pictured middle left] will be there from around 9am on the working bee days (this Saturday morning is one of them!). So come along,... say hello, do some weeding etc, make some friends within "the Friends" and help look after this very important heritage site. No matter what time of year, it can get very warm at the cemetery in the full sun, so always bring a hat, a bottle of water, and wear closed in shoes.
