25.01.2022 The love our Lord Jesus has for us is on full display in Isaiah 53. Here's one of the many amazing verses from that chapter which we looked at on Sunday.

25.01.2022 Here's an article to help us think wisely how we should engage with sport.

22.01.2022 The kitchen and meeting room are 99% finished. We’re still waiting on a few things for the kitchen. But the builders have moved out, and we’re planning on having morning tea and supper, served from the kitchen, on Sunday 27 September. Here are some photos.

13.01.2022 I used NAIDOC Week as an opportunity to confess our sins, past and present, against God and the first people of our country. Here is our prayer Alistair... _______ Gracious Loving Father. You have created all men and women to be equal in your sight. The Psalmist David tells us that you are the one who knit us together in our mother’s womb. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. We are wonderful in your eyes. All of us. The creation story tells us you made the world in all its beauty and grandeur with all the animals and plants, and you declared it all to be good. Then you made humankind. And you declared creation to be very good. And then after we trashed your plan for us and after we destroyed our relationship with you by shunning you and abandoning you your commitment to us endured and you sent your son the Lord Jesus to win us back to you. And he came not just to save an isolated nation. Or a people. Or a tribe. Or a race. He came to save all whom he had created. In him there is no white or black or rich or poor. His grace is indiscriminate. Lord as we have observed NAIDOC week here in Australia, we who belong to the Christian church have had to face the reality that our ancestors have not treated aboriginal people here in Australia with the love and respect that you have for those same Aboriginal people. The Muwinina people who inhabited the land we meet on today were not considered wonderful by the first settlers. Blood was shed. Lives were lost. And an ancient culture was all but wiped out. And those who professed to be followers of Christ were among those who perpetrated these atrocities. Father we cannot undo the past. But we can today be better at loving the descendants of those original inhabitants. Many of us today carry around, even unconsciously, the racism of our own ancestors. Forgive us. And teach us how to love everyone, regardless of their race or skin color or background. Help us at St John’s to be truly welcoming to all people. Not just at the door of our church building. But at the door of our homes. We have been reconciled to Christ. Please fill us by your Spirit so that we might be reconciling all people to him through the preached gospel even as we work hard at reconciling with one another. We pray these big prayers ... these world changing prayers ... for your Son’s glory, and for the good of all people. Amen

12.01.2022 A picture perfect day here in Hobart. This is one of the ornamental pear trees planted in our laneway a few years ago. It’s in full bloom. But for many who are near and dear to us, the fog of mental illness shrouds their day in darkness. We want to be a church who provides these dear people with a place of safety, love, community, and understanding. ... Please remember to ask the God of comfort and strength to draw especially near to them, to protect them, sustain them, and heal them. And ask God to give you the wisdom to know how best to love them.

08.01.2022 Part 2 of article on sport. "Priscilla Ruddle once described to me how she sought to stand firm and grow as a Christian when she was playing competitive sport: ‘By having a good church base, including involvement in weekly Bible study, attending a prayer meeting at the Australian Institute of Sport, having close Christian friends who were willing to keep me accountable, and access to chaplains.’ One of the priorities for the Christian sportsperson should be commitment to a local church."

05.01.2022 The vision we have for our building, which we gave to our architects 5 years ago, is as relevant today as it was then. It’s this: Our building is to be an inviting space in which all people from all generations and nationalities can openly gather together to pray, learn, eat, and connect. We want children to feel welcome and safe; and we want to communicate to the citizens of Hobart that we do not simply exist for ourselves we are followers of Jesus who value our heritage..., embrace our contemporary place in the city, and seek to serve the people of Hobart. This is why we’re spending money on our facilities. We want to be blessing to the people of Hobart and beyond as we hold onto, and hold out the word of life. Al
