25.01.2022 St John WA has now changed how we treat patients suffering from potential spinal injuries. Semi-rigid collars were traditionally applied if the patient was b...elieved to have been suffering from a cervical spinal injury, regardless of the severity level. This is no longer considered best practice and have since implemented a new assessment criteria. We encourage everyone to familiarise yourself with this update. Please share this amongst your friends and families. Thank you for helping us spread this message.

24.01.2022 We love this ad from St John Ambulance in the UK, teaching parents how to help your child if they are choking. Choking is one of the leading causes of injury an...d death in children aged four and under, and is a hazard that can strike any child at any time. Make sure you know how to clear your child's airway, it could save their life. 23.01.2022 We have joined forces with the Road Safety Commission and Paramedic Josh Lyons to remind everyone to stay safe on the roads this long weekend. Should you see us... coming this weekend, just make sure to give way to us and follow the SLOMO method - slow down, move over. Let's put safety first and avoid driving when tired or after consuming alcohol, only overtake when it is absolutely safe to do so and please stick to the speed limit. We want everyone to enjoy the weekend and arrive at their destination without an incident. Lets all take some time and plan our journeys out and stick to good driving behaviours so we have a fatality free weekend.

23.01.2022 We need your help to stay safe!

23.01.2022 Every year, approximately 34,000 Australians and New Zealanders suffer from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, with 80% occurring within our homes. This Restar...t A Heart Week, we're helping raise awareness about the importance of early CPR and defibrillation and you can help! Remember to CALL, PUSH and SHOCK - it could help save a life. - @Council of Ambulance Authorities - Australasia

21.01.2022 Four off-duty police officers leapt into action after a 27-year-old man collapsed at a sporting centre in Leeming. The officers were playing indoor cricket on T...hursday 18 June 2020, when another player collapsed in the net next door. Hearing calls for help Sgt Simon Bowen immediately called 000, directing centre staff to bring the defibrillator. Sgt Brad Hasson and Det Sgts Nathan Carbone and Dan Whitney commenced CPR while Sgt Bowen connected the defibrillator. In the short time it took for St John Ambulance to arrive three shocks were delivered. The man, Dane, was treated at a nearby hospital where it was determined he had suffered a cardiac arrest. He has since made a full recovery. Dane said the incident highlights the importance of effective first aid training and defibrillators. If those police officers had not been there that night, as well as a functioning defibrillator, I can safely say I might not be here today, he said. I cannot express my thanks enough.

20.01.2022 A big thanks to the St. John Sub Centre in Tambellup for providing local police with a new defibrillator. With any luck well never need to use it, however its... good to know there will always be one in our police vehicle should it be required. #fb This update came from the Tambellup Police on Twitter

20.01.2022 The long weekend is here! Let your hair down and enjoy some time with your families. We know we say this a lot but please remember not to text or drink and d...rive. We all have places and go and people to see, so let’s get to our destinations as safely as possible. Have a great weekend everyone!

19.01.2022 For half the attendees, a Skills speed dating session SJA style - a 4 station, 20 minute taste of what's to come in training etc. this year. For the other half of the group - an Emergency Management tabletop exercise

19.01.2022 In a split second, you know something has gone horribly wrong. You stop abruptly as you struggle to breathe. Sharp, intense pain spreads through your chest and ...panic sets in. For some, this sounds very familiar. Choking is a terrifying experience and having someone with you who knows first aid could be the difference between life and death. More than 80 people die from choking each year in Australia. It's the second largest cause of death in aged care and the leading cause of injury or death in children aged four and under. The Heimlich manoeuvre is not the recommended method anymore for helping someone who is choking. Instead, deliver 5 sharp back blows in between the patient's shoulder blades. If this is unsuccessful, deliver up to 5 chest thrusts. Continue to alternate between the two techniques and always ensure you have called Triple Zero (000) for help. If the casualty becomes unresponsive, commence CPR and make sure the ambulance is on its way. The signs and symptoms for choking are: Clutching the throat. Coughing, wheezing or gagging. Having difficulties breathing, speaking or swallowing. Trying to cry but making strange or no sounds at all. Making whistling or crowing sounds. Face, neck, lips, ears or fingernails turning blue. Becoming unresponsive. Download your free choking guide here: https://bit.ly/2B3Iqr7

19.01.2022 Would you know what to do if a family member suddenly collapsed for no obvious reason or cause? What if it was your own father? 18.01.2022 COVID-19 has forced us all to reflect on how we can do things safer from a hygiene point of view. This even includes looking into Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation ...(CPR). We've actually had a lot of people ask us if it's still safe to perform CPR during this COVID-19 and the answer is - YES! If you have access to a face shield (for administering breaths), please use them. Otherwise provide chest compressions and withhold the breaths unless performing on a family member or instructed to do so by our Triple Zero (000) calltaker. Ensure that if you are administering CPR on an unconscious patient, that you have called Triple Zero (000) for emergency assistance. In WA, we're incredibly lucky to not have had any community transmissions in the last few months, but it doesn't hurt to remain cautious.

18.01.2022 We couldn't help but notice that Perth roads are getting busier again. Don't even get us started on trying to merge onto Shelley Bridge... We all have place...s to go, but sometimes we need some help from the WA community. It's important to give way to emergency service vehicles when our lights and sirens are on. Here are three easy ways you can help us get to where we need to go. See more

18.01.2022 Way before we adopted CPR as we know it today, did you know that hundreds of years ago, patients were whipped in an attempt to restore blood flow? It's certainl...y not a method used these days (for obvious reasons) but it does make you appreciate how far we have come when talking about the science behind resuscitation. We found some of the zaniest methods of resuscitation from history and we wanted to show just how far we have come. 1500's - The Bellows Method involved using the bellows from the fireplace to blow hot air into the lungs through the mouth (eww...) 1700's - The Fumigation Method was popular amongst the Northern American Indians and American colonists. It involved blowing tobacco smoke into an animal bladder and then into the rectum of the body being resuscitated (yes, you read that right). This practice lasted until 1811. 1800's - The Russian Method saw patients covered in ice and snow to slow their metabolism. This method hoped that freezing parts of the body would assist in circulation. And our favourite bizarre technique from history... In 1812, European lifeguards would lift the patient onto the back of a horse and trot it up and down the beach. The bouncing was believed to have been the best method for providing compression and relaxation of the chest. The process was actually discontinued due to a large amount of horse manure accumulating on the beach. There you have it! We now know of course that 30 compressions to 2 quick breaths (over 2 seconds max.) is one of the best possible methods. Compressions that are a accompanied by good speed, fully released and have good depth are best. Its pretty incredible how many lives have we think have been saved thanks to CPR. Its estimated that 5 million lives have been saved since the 1950's. All you need is a pair of hands and you can make a difference.

17.01.2022 Weve all seen this guy before hanging around our roller doors and mailboxes. Red-Back spider bites can actually be dangerous for children and the elderly, so i...ts important to know how to treat this type of bite. As Australians, were pretty well equipped to handle spider bites, but in case you need a refresher, heres how you can treat a bite: Follow the DRSABCD action plan Lay the patient down, rest and reassure. Ensure you monitor their condition for any changes. Apply a cold pack or cold compression to lessen the pain for no longer than 20 minutes Seek medical aid if the person bitten is a young child or elderly, has collapsed or is suffering from severe pain. If youve been bitten, you may experience some unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, swelling and profuse sweating. Try to remain calm and seek medical attention. You shouldnt necessarily need an ambulance for a spider bite, but in severe life-threatening cases always call Triple Zero (000).

17.01.2022 Trigger Warning : The aim of this post is to help educate the WA community about what to do when experiencing or witnessing a Mental Health emergency. If any ...of the content expressed in this post upsets you, please discontinue reading and reach out for support. A couple of days ago, we posted about when you should call for an ambulance. We received a lot of feedback about the inclusion of when to call for help in a mental health emergency. We wanted to help answer those questions and have pulled together some useful information that will hopefully help in the event of a mental health emergency. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How do I know if I need to call for help? This is a tricky question to answer. In most situations, it's not so black and white and sharing a checklist of potential symptoms may not be the right way to answer this question. We believe that when in doubt, always call Triple Zero (000). It's always better to seek assistance than do nothing at all. We're here to help and will do our best to assist you in your time of need. Our Communications Officer will do their best to offer assistance over the phone and get the right help to you as soon as possible. Always remember that you are important and deserve help when you need it most. If you need urgent help but do not want an ambulance, please reach out to the resources listed at the bottom of this post. Most importantly, if you or someone you know is at immediate risk of harm it is imperative you call for help. Not all responses to Mental Health emergencies will result in admission to hospital. All cases are managed individually and are subject to the needs of the patient at that time. Always follow DRSABCD and ensure first of all that you are safe from any danger. 15.01.2022 Asthma Various triggers can cause the onset or worsening of asthma symptoms, such as exercise, respiratory infections, chemical and strong smells, or some foods... and food preservatives. Changes in temperature and cold air can also be a trigger. Asthma symptoms can include a persistant cough, wheezing, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath and tightness in chest. Symptoms can vary in severity from person to person. It is common and best practice for asthma sufferers to carry a spacer with their bronchodilator, many people choose not to, as spacers can be bulky and inconvenient. Collapsible cardboard spacers are very easy to carry with your puffer, and are available to purchase from St John. If you are prone to attacks, please remember to keep your asthma puffer on hand. If you don't have your medication nearby or it isnt relieving your symptoms, call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance.

13.01.2022 National Volunteer Week starts today. So if you see a volunteer around the community please make sure you say Thank you If it wasnt for these amazing volunteers we could not help people in our communities in their time of need!

12.01.2022 You may see some of these yellow posters on fences or gates or the front of houses in your community. If you do, please RESPECT those inside and their decision ...or need to isolate at the moment. You might feel healthy, but what if you bring coronavirus into those who are at risk - our sick people and our old people? Every one of us has an important role to protect our community. This is serious stuff and people can get proper sick. STAY AT HOME unless you absolutely have to, no parties or sharing drinks/cigarettes/grog, and practice best health like it shows us on the posters

10.01.2022 In the movies, you often see the patient jump out of their skin when a defib is applied to their chest. This is a total dramatisation! It's not how defibs work, so we've put together this handy tutorial to show you how easy (and safe) it is to use a defibrillator.

10.01.2022 One in four of us will have a stroke in our lifetime (yes you read that right). That means it's even more important for us to be able to recognise the signs of ...a stroke, as it could help save a life. Just remember to check for these four signs and always call Triple 000 in the event of an emergency: Face: is the patient's face drooping? Arms: can the patient lift both arms? Speech: is the patient's speech slurred or comprehensible? Can they understand you? Time: every second counts, call Triple 000 immediately if you suspect a patient is suffering from a stroke. Learn more this National Stroke Week by visiting Stroke Foundation.

09.01.2022 You might not know about this feature on your smart device, but it sure would come in handy in a medical emergency! Most smart devices now have a 'Medical ID' f...eature where you can store your critical medical information. Just by tapping on 'emergency call', first responders can then find this crucial information quickly. This could make a huge difference when first treating the patient, especially if you are allergic to specific medications and are unable to communicate with us. Before setting up your Medical ID on your device, it is important to consider that should your phone ever be stolen or lost, that information may be accessible by another individual. St John WA recommends that users only share information they are comfortable with when using this feature. For a tutorial on how to set it up for your device, you can find this here: https://bit.ly/35xqBhp
