24.01.2022 We're busting a myth today . If someone is experiencing hypothermia, please don't give them alcohol. Many people will tell you they feel warmer after having... a glass or two of their favourite tipple and theyre not lying. Alcohol does make you feel warmer however, alcohol has the effect of actually dropping your core temperature which can be very dangerous for someone suffering from hypothermia. Hypothermia can set in when body temperature falls below 35.0C and common symptoms include severe shivering, slurred speech and a slowed heart rate. People experiencing or at risk of hypothermia should remove any wet or damp clothes if possible, wrap themselves in a blanket and cover their heads with a beanie. A warm drink will also help, just make sure to steer clear of beer and spirits. Maybe a hot choccy milk might suit better?

24.01.2022 Snake bite season is upon us again, please take care and be on the look out for snakes as they move about in the natural habitat. Do you know snake bite first aid? Do you have a first aid kit? With a snake bite compression bandage? If you answered no, why not pop down to our local sub center on a Tuesday or Thursday for a chat, we can help you out with a purchase of a first aid kit and snake bite bandage, or book in for a first aid course, all proceeds go back into our sub center to benefit our local community. https://www.msn.com//snike-bites-on-the-rise-ac/ar-AAH57Vp

22.01.2022 Today is R U OK day. It only takes a few minutes to have a chat with someone who you love and ask them if they are OK. Mental health is something we can work through together, so I ask you, ARE YOU OK?

22.01.2022 Interesting to watch

19.01.2022 Triple zero heroes. See what Perth's ambos see, as they respond to unprecedented demand.

18.01.2022 Weve all seen this guy before hanging around our roller doors and mailboxes. Red-Back spider bites can actually be dangerous for children and the elderly, so i...ts important to know how to treat this type of bite. As Australians, were pretty well equipped to handle spider bites, but in case you need a refresher, heres how you can treat a bite: Follow the DRSABCD action plan Lay the patient down, rest and reassure. Ensure you monitor their condition for any changes. Apply a cold pack or cold compression to lessen the pain for no longer than 20 minutes Seek medical aid if the person bitten is a young child or elderly, has collapsed or is suffering from severe pain. If youve been bitten, you may experience some unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, swelling and profuse sweating. Try to remain calm and seek medical attention. You shouldnt necessarily need an ambulance for a spider bite, but in severe life-threatening cases always call Triple Zero (000).

18.01.2022 Call Triple Zero (000) using the First Responder app to pinpoint your location.

18.01.2022 Anzac Day is one of the most solemn days on Australia's calendar, with tens of thousands traditionally attending dawn services or marches. Due to coronavirus restrictions, Australia's Anzac Day services have all been called off this year. RSLs around the country encouraging people to head outside and "Light up the Dawn" with mini-services in their driveways, at their front gates or on their verandahs.... St John Ambulance Boyup Brook members support this great initiative this year and you will see some of our volunteers in uniform at the end of their driveway's too. Not to mention if you need us we are still a phone call away. More information about tomorrow is in this article by the ABC.

08.01.2022 69% of Australian adults are unaware of how to help someone suffering from anaphylaxis*. Life-threatening allergic reactions can be pretty scary so it's impor...tant you know what to do, as you could help save a loved one or even a complete stranger. Remember to follow the St John Action Plan: DRSABCD and check to see if the patient has an epi-pen on them. Also remember the golden rule for epi-pen usage: blue to sky orange to thigh. We have seen a few needles through thumbs before, so always make sure to take a breath, focus and read the instructions carefully before administering the adrenaline. If you need a re-cap on how to use an epi-pen, you can view our guide here: https://bit.ly/37dZLb5. Alternatively, you could book in for a refresher course here: https://bit.ly/38dddxk Schools can also book a free 10 minute presentation. 05.01.2022 How some choose to wind down

03.01.2022 "The Kiss of Life" (1967) depicts a real life situation where a utility worker gave his colleague mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, after he fell unconscious follow...ing contact with a low voltage line. Unable to give CPR due to their positioning and attachment to the harness, he continued breathing into his lungs until he felt a pulse. Once a pulse was identified, he was taken down and received CPR from his heroic colleague and another worker. He survived. Knowing the basics could potentially save a life. Whether it be your mate's life or even someone you don't know, you have the power to help. When an incident occurs, it is very normal to freeze up, but we encourage anyone who witnesses a potentially life threatening incident, to follow DRSABCD - Danger, response, send for help, airway, breathing, CPR and defibrillation. You too could help save a life.

03.01.2022 Everyone knows that you should always call for an ambulance in a medical emergency, but there is often a bit of confusion around what constitutes a medical emer...gency. Please call Triple Zero (000) and request an ambulance in the following situations. Note: If you are unsure about whether a person requires an ambulance, it is better to call Triple Zero (000). chest pain or chest tightness sudden onset of weakness, numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg breathing difficulties unconsciousness uncontrollable bleeding a sudden collapse or unexplained fall unexplained fitting in adults injury from a major car accident a fall from a great height serious assault, including stabbing or shooting severe burns, particularly in young children infants who are fitting or have an ongoing fever. In a medical emergency, it is important that you do not drive yourself or another person to hospital as you may endanger your life, the patient's life or members of the public. Not only are you unable to concentrate on driving but moving some patients can make the situation worse. In a medical emergency, Communication Officers can provide medical advice and paramedics can commence essential life-saving treatment at the scene, as well as en route to hospital, rather than beginning treatment at the hospital. Please be mindful that just because you have called an ambulance, does not mean you will be seen sooner once you've arrived at the hospital. For when it's urgent, but not an emergency, you can always visit one of our Urgent Care centres. For more information, click here: stjohnhealth.com.au/walk-in-urgent-care/ We'd appreciate it if this message was shared, thank you.

01.01.2022 Are you heading to the Care and Ageing Expo this weekend? We hope to see you there! Our stand will feature our incredible community transport service, volunteering information and we have some prizes to be won too! See you at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre!

01.01.2022 Please be mindful when driving, of all emergency vehicles and stay safe on the roads
