24.01.2022 Rural road fatalities contributed to two thirds of last year's national road toll. According to the Australian Road Safety Foundation, speed is the number one d...riving issue on WA regional roads, with distraction and fatigue not far behind. 835 drivers tragically lost their lives last year, on regional roads across Australia. While it may be tempting to drive at high speeds, check your phone or operate your vehicle when fatigued, it is not worth your life. Please be mindful on our roads, and remember to enjoy the ride, safely.

20.01.2022 The message for R U OK? Day 2020 is: 'THERE'S MORE TO SAY AFTER R U OK?' 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life.

15.01.2022 You might not know about this feature on your smart device, but it sure would come in handy in a medical emergency! Most smart devices now have a 'Medical ID' f...eature where you can store your critical medical information. Just by tapping on 'emergency call', first responders can then find this crucial information quickly. This could make a huge difference when first treating the patient, especially if you are allergic to specific medications and are unable to communicate with us. Before setting up your Medical ID on your device, it is important to consider that should your phone ever be stolen or lost, that information may be accessible by another individual. St John WA recommends that users only share information they are comfortable with when using this feature. For a tutorial on how to set it up for your device, you can find this here: https://bit.ly/35xqBhp

13.01.2022 Please check Main Roads website for road closures before travelling south via IOD.

12.01.2022 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO AVOID BURNOUT Would you give up five hours of your free time each month to drive an ambulance or help maintain life-saving equipment? S...t John Ambulance says it needs more volunteers in the Wheatbelt region's 63 ambulance depots. Regional Manager Craig Spencer says finding enough volunteers to evenly spread the workload is an ongoing challenge. "One thing I'm worried about is burnout," he said. "The nature of many of the volunteers is they're so passionate about serving their community that they'll often sacrifice a lot in their own life. "So I think the way to make the volunteering sustainable is to make sure we've got enough people so that we don't unduly burden those few." The Kellerberrin sub centre has just eight active volunteers - but Community Paramedic Simon Menz says up to 20 people are needed to operate the service. He says people can help on the frontline as ambulance drivers, or work behind the scenes to maintain vehicles and equipment. "Country Western Australia relies really, really heavily on volunteers to be able to operate an ambulance service," he said. "And just because you're volunteering doesn't mean you have to volunteer all your time - we'll appreciate anybody that can give any amount of time to help out." : Simon Menz

11.01.2022 When our mascot Kura the Bear said her American cousin knows CPR, we were stunned! Turns out this grizzly bear thinks CPR applies to inanimate objects too... on... the plus side her depth, rate and release are pretty good! When performing CPR on a patient, ensure you complete 30 chest compressions to 2 breaths. You can practice on a bin if you like, but we'd much prefer you come and practice on one of our CPR mannequins instead (way more hygienic too!). 01.01.2022 If someone you know has asthma, you may want to read this. It's really important that you use a spacer with a puffer if someone is suffering from an asthma atta...ck. Using a spacer means the patient receives a more effective dose of Ventolin. It could really make a difference if they're having a severe attack. If a spacer is not available to the patient, you can improvise by using a plastic bottle. All you need to do is cut a hole at the bottom and poke the puffer through the space. Always call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency situation, especially if the patient is not breathing normally. For more information on Asthma management, please visit Asthma Australia's website: https://asthma.org.au/
