24.01.2022 Schools back tomorrow so please slow down and watch out for all our precious small people.

22.01.2022 Everyone must practise good hygiene to protect against infection and prevent the coronavirus spreading. Washing hands regularly with soap and warm water helps prevent the spread of germs.

20.01.2022 Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction and in some cases, it can rapidly become life threatening. If a patient is suffering from Anaphylaxis, it must be trea...ted as a medical emergency and you must call Triple Zero (000). If you know someone who suffers from severe allergies, it's important to be aware of how you can help them in an emergency. Always follow DRSABCD and if available, administer an Adrenaline Auto-Injector (Epi-Pen). To administer an Adrenaline Auto-Injector (Epi-Pen): Form a firm first around the auto-injector, and pull off the BLUE safety release. Place the ORANGE end against the outer mid-thigh at a 90 degree angle (it can be injected through clothing). Push the top button down hard until a click is heard or felt, and hold in place for three seconds. Remove the auto-injector and dispose of it safely being careful not to touch the needle. Commence CPR if the patient becomes unconscious and is not breathing normally. Remember the golden rule: Orange to thigh, blue to sky!

20.01.2022 You did it, WA! You helped us reach over 200,000 downloads of the First Responder app! We're so pleased to see so many West Australians download the app. Thank you for your continuous support!

19.01.2022 Four off-duty police officers leapt into action after a 27-year-old man collapsed at a sporting centre in Leeming. The officers were playing indoor cricket on T...hursday 18 June 2020, when another player collapsed in the net next door. Hearing calls for help Sgt Simon Bowen immediately called 000, directing centre staff to bring the defibrillator. Sgt Brad Hasson and Det Sgts Nathan Carbone and Dan Whitney commenced CPR while Sgt Bowen connected the defibrillator. In the short time it took for St John Ambulance to arrive three shocks were delivered. The man, Dane, was treated at a nearby hospital where it was determined he had suffered a cardiac arrest. He has since made a full recovery. Dane said the incident highlights the importance of effective first aid training and defibrillators. If those police officers had not been there that night, as well as a functioning defibrillator, I can safely say I might not be here today, he said. I cannot express my thanks enough.

19.01.2022 Every year, approximately 34,000 Australians and New Zealanders suffer from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, with 80% occurring within our homes. This Restar...t A Heart Week, we're helping raise awareness about the importance of early CPR and defibrillation and you can help! Remember to CALL, PUSH and SHOCK - it could help save a life. - @Council of Ambulance Authorities - Australasia

18.01.2022 We couldn't help but notice that Perth roads are getting busier again. Don't even get us started on trying to merge onto Shelley Bridge... We all have place...s to go, but sometimes we need some help from the WA community. It's important to give way to emergency service vehicles when our lights and sirens are on. Here are three easy ways you can help us get to where we need to go. See more

15.01.2022 We had a scorcher of a weekend and this hot weather is set to continue for most of this week. Most of us are used to hot temperatures in December, but there are others who may be more susceptible to heat related illnesses such as: the elderly, overseas travellers and children. To avoid heat stress, we recommend the following to help you keep cool in the coming days:... Do not leave any persons or animals in a locked car Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol where possible Stay indoors and crank the air-con if you can Wear sunscreen Reduce physical activity For more tips to stay cool this summer visit HealthyWA's guide: http://ow.ly/HwAo50xoSDx

14.01.2022 As part of our standard procedure during COVID-19, and to ensure our patients receive the best and most appropriate prehospital care, our Crews will be asking a...ll patients if they have any flu like symptoms. This is to protect our amazing Volunteers and our Community of the Wheatbelt against the spread of any potentially infectious illness including COVID-19. When calling for an Ambulance, you will be asked by the 000 call taker if you have flu like symptoms. When our crews arrive, they will ask you the same questions. Please dont be scared to answer truthfully, even if you think you just have a mild cold. We have strict hygiene measures in place to keep you and our crews safe. Our goal is to help our community stay safe and stop the spread - but we cant do that without our resilient and fantastic Community behind us. Stay safe! The St John Team - Wheatbelt

14.01.2022 LUCKY ESCAPE FOR VOLLIE CREW A St John Ambulance crew is lucky to have avoided serious harm after they hit a horse on South Coast Highway late on Wednesday ...night. The volunteer crew hit the animal around 10pm on November 6 while returning to Jerramungup, after transferring a patient to Albany. Remarkably, they were not injured. St John's Great Southern acting regional manager Matthew Guile said it's a reminder of the dangers of country driving, and assured emergency services in the Jerramungup-Bremer Bay area would still be available if required. "Driving at dawn, dusk and in the evening does have some significant risks," he said. "We do a lot of patient transfers at those times of the day, as people need to get from one place to the other."

10.01.2022 We love a feel-good story! A mature couple was travelling down south through Highbury, when suddenly their tyre blew out. They swerved the car but managed to ...pull up on the side of the road safely. Community Paramedic Shelley (pictured below) just happened to be driving past on her way to Dumbleyung when she saw the car on the side of the road. Her instincts kicked in and she pulled over to check if there was any issue. Luckily, no one was hurt except the tyre! To warn oncoming traffic, she used her beacons to alert drivers as they drove past. Luckily this accident wasn't serious but it's great to see our people stopping to help others in need, regardless if it's a medical emergency or not! Well done Shelley, we're lucky to have you! 10.01.2022 Anyone who has had to call triple zero, knows it can be a frightening experience. Here is an insight into what its like to be a St John Communications Officer and be the one receiving the call

09.01.2022 We’ve all seen this guy before hanging around our roller doors and mailboxes. Red-Back spider bites can actually be dangerous for children and the elderly, so i...t’s important to know how to treat this type of bite. As Australians, we’re pretty well equipped to handle spider bites, but in case you need a refresher, here’s how you can treat a bite: Follow the DRSABCD action plan Lay the patient down, rest and reassure. Ensure you monitor their condition for any changes. Apply a cold pack or cold compression to lessen the pain for no longer than 20 minutes Seek medical aid if the person bitten is a young child or elderly, has collapsed or is suffering from severe pain. If you’ve been bitten, you may experience some unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, swelling and profuse sweating. Try to remain calm and seek medical attention. You shouldn’t necessarily need an ambulance for a spider bite, but in severe life-threatening cases always call Triple Zero (000).

07.01.2022 Men are statistically less likely to seek medical aid when suffering from a medical condition, both physical or mental. According to Men's Health Week, a male h...as a life expectancy of 78.0 years while females can expect to live to 82.3 years old. Men also take their own lives at 4 times the rate of women - on average, that's 5 men a day. This Men's Health Week, we want to help raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early treatment of illnesses that affect men. We all have the power to change this. Tag a mate and help us raise awareness. We thank you for supporting this initiative. More information about Men's Health Week can be found here: https://www.menshealthweek.org.au/

06.01.2022 If someone you know has asthma, you may want to read this. Its really important that you use a spacer with a puffer if someone is suffering from an asthma atta...ck. Using a spacer means the patient receives a more effective dose of Ventolin. It could really make a difference if theyre having a severe attack. If a spacer is not available to the patient, you can improvise by using a plastic bottle. All you need to do is cut a hole at the bottom and poke the puffer through the space. Always call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency situation, especially if the patient is not breathing normally. 05.01.2022 Amazing! Never too young to learn first aid...

04.01.2022 Most of us are familiar with the Rescue Anne CPR mannequins used in our first aid courses, but do you know the lady you've been placing your lips on? L'Inconnue de la Seine (the unknown woman of the Seine), has an interesting story that has been shrouded in mystery for around 150 years. The legend depicts a young woman who mysteriously washed up one day in the Seine. After being discovered, she was transported to the Paris morgue and put on public display, for the purpose of ...identification. No one was able to identify her, but the public was surprised by her gentle smile, even in death. An attendant at the morgue was apparently so transfixed by her beauty, he created a cast of her face, so he may capture it forever. This inspired a series of masks to populate around Europe in appreciation of her Mona Lisa smile. Many years later, toy manufacturer, Asmund Laerdal was approached to help develop a doll to demonstrate CPR. He drew inspiration from L'Inconnue de la Seine, as he remembered her serene face hanging in the form of a mask at his in-law's house. The CPR mannequins we use today have the same face that belonged to this unknown individual. Many versions of the story have surfaced over the years, but this one seems to paint the most detailed picture. L'Inconnue de la Seine is now known as the 'Most Kissed Girl in History'.

03.01.2022 No matter where you are, we're here for you... but it helps if we know exactly where you are first. If you call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance, the first qu...estion you are asked is "What is the address of the emergency?" In order for us to get help to you as quickly as possible, please ensure you are providing us with the correct address. Describing nearby landmarks with identifying features will help too. In the event that you don't know where you are, you can always use the First Responder app. Our app can geo-locate you and identify your latitude and longitude coordinates. You can even call Triple Zero through the app as well. Please note you will need access to 3G/4G to use this feature.
