15.01.2022 Today is All Saints Day and our parish is honouring and celebrating all of hose who have entered heaven - including saints who are recognised by the Church and those who are not. All Saints' Day is a solemn holy day of the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1. Although millions, or even billions of people may already be saints, All Saints' Day observances tend to focus on known saints -- those recognised in the canon of the saints by the Catholic Church.... All Saints' Day is also commemorated by members of the Eastern Orthodox Church as well as some protestant churches, such as Lutheran and Anglican churches. All Saints' Day was formally started by Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Virgin Mary and all the Martyrs on May 13 in 609 AD. Boniface IV also established All Souls' Day, which follows All Saints. The holy day was eventually established on November 1 by Pope Gregory III in the mid-eighth century as a day dedicated to the saints and their relics. The May 13 celebration was subsequently abandoned. In Ireland, the Church celebrated All Saints' Day on April 20, to avoid associating the day with the traditional harvest festivals and pagan feasts associated with Samhain, celebrated at the same time. Following the establishment of the Frankish Empire, and following the reign of Charlemagne, the holy day, which was already celebrated on November 1, became a holy day of obligation by decree of Pope Gregory IV and Louis the Pious, who was king over a portion of Charlemagne's former empire. 11.01.2022 Today our parish honoured the Sisters of Mercy on Mercy Day. Fr John and Fr Vince con-celebrated the Mass in front of pupils from St Xavier's and St Mary's and Mercy associates along with parishioners. Associate members presented a posy of flowers to Sr Christine, Sr Gabrielle and Sr Regina along with students from St Mary's College who also honoured the Sisters with flowers. Venerable Catherine McAuley placed her community under the patronage of Our Lady of Mercy because Mar...y is the one who has the deepest knowledge of the mystery of God's mercy. Catherine sought to bring the mercy of God the Father to all those in need. Mercy Day is a special day of celebration and an opportunity for all Mercy Sisters, their associates, and partners in ministry to celebrate and rejoice with Mary, the Mother of Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy arrived in Gunnedah in the summer of 1879 - 141 years ago. Within a year the Sisters had built a convent opened two schools and welcomed boarders from around the region. In the following years, branch convents were opened all around the north west to provide education to one and all. The Sisters opened Gunnedah’s first high school, the town’s first business college, the first nursing home, and Gunnedah’s first hostel for aged care. Later they moved into pastoral care and other works in the community. Today our Sisters perform a valuable role in the parish and wider community and we pray for God's blessings on their ongoing works of Mercy. I will close with this prayer offered by the Sisters of St Joseph’s of the Sacred Heart on Mercy Day. A blessing from the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart: In this historic Covid year, and on this historic Mercy Day May you all be especially blessed in all your goings and comingså In the planting of your feet and hearts in the many sacred disconnections and reconnections of this holy time. As Josephites, we give thanks for your companionship and commitment for the power of your love, your strength of passion and generosity We remain blessed by all our Mercy Sisters across the world With much gratitude and love Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart

05.01.2022 The Feast Day of the Archangels- Gabriel, Rafael and Saint Michael the Archangel, the patron Saint of Police officers - is also Police Remembrance Day: Each year, September 29 holds a special significance for Police throughout Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomon Islands. It is a day for police to pause to honour officers whose lives have been cut short while performing their duty as a police officer. This important day is also a time to remember ...police officers who have lost their lives through illness or other circumstances. The National Police Memorial in Canberra was completed and dedicated on September 29, 2006 (National Police Remembrance Day). Let us pray for our police past and present: The Police Prayer God of all people, we know it is from you that we have learned what goodness and justice are. You have given us the task of maintaining law and order in our community. We seek the strength to meet the many challenges encountered in this endeavour. Give us the courage and the resolution to do our duty at all times, and such a respect and love for justice that neither promise nor threat will ever make us depart from it. Help us with your guidance to be the Guardian and the Friend of the whole community; a friend to children, an example to youth, a counselor and adviser to all citizens. Grant us the skill, and the wisdom, to make us always stronger in protecting and supporting the community. Guide us in knowing when to enforce and when to relax the letter of the law. Help us to be a personal example of the honesty, the goodness, and the justice which it is our duty to maintain, and grant that our actions will inspire in our community confidence in its police officers. We make our prayer to you, confident of your love and your compassion. Amen
