25.01.2022 St Joseph's was recently invited to participate in a competition "Christmas in the Classroom" held by the Upper Hunter Mining Dialogue and Hunter River Times. We were given a set budget to purchase and create Christmas decorations to create a display within our school. The front office was selected to showcase student creations. Students handmade a First Nations art piece, stained glass windowpanes, clay decorations, origami and paper baubles. With much joy and elation for our school's hard work and inclusivity, our school has placed 2nd out of 16 schools within the Upper Hunter. Many thanks to all the students who participated and supported this project and to Mr Clarence who led the team. A full report will be in the next Newsletter.
25.01.2022 Today's focus for NAIDOC was bush medicine and bush tucker! During Pastoral Class, students learned how to use the flora and fauna around the school then, with COVID-19 in mind, took some Red Ash (soap tree) leaves outside to create an anti-bacterial lather! At lunch time, the staff were treated to contemporary bush tucker; a Croft's vanilla sponge iced with lemon myrtle icing and strawberry gum syrup, garnished with the bush lollies grevillea and bottlebrush. Yum!
24.01.2022 TAS students have constructed some great tools in their classes. Students in Year 10 Timber crafted Bow Saws while students in Year 9 Metalwork created Tack Hammers and Sliding Bevels. The quality of workmanship has been outstanding. Great job!
24.01.2022 Class of 2020 Hmmm, maybe not! Staff joined with Year 12 students today in their traditional dress-up day. Some of them blended in so well with the students that not even the principal recognised them!
24.01.2022 The awesome canteen staff cooked up a marvellous Christmas Feast today. Mouthwatering hot roast pork and chicken with roast vegetables or cold chicken and ham with pasta salad and garden salad were enjoyed by 110 students and staff. Dessert was a delicious choice of pavlova or Crunchie cheesecake. We can't wait to see what delectable treats they will be selling next!
23.01.2022 Year 12 Business Studies students were given the opportunity to engage with the Economics Literacy Centre’s Business Studies HSC Review Day. With insights from senior markers, textbook authors and leaders in the Business Studies Community, our students were given extra tools to succeed further in their HSC. The day was an overall success and Mr Criticos would like to commend the students for their motivation and drive to succeed.
22.01.2022 It’s R U OK? Day today. See these helpful hints below.
20.01.2022 Yesterday students from the Farm Club watched the local artificial breeding technician, Brendan Coonan, inseminate the school stud cows. We have used some Canadian genetics and a bull called Alcatraz that will hopefully give us a great Angus show steer.

18.01.2022 Year 8 went head-to-head in a solar oven cook-off. Despite the wind, a top of 75 degrees was reached using good science skills and the power of the sun! Well done Year 8!
18.01.2022 Yesterday Year 10 students had an opportunity to engage in the ROADwhyz Program with a difference this year. Students learnt about car maintenance including changing tyres and the importance of being 'road ready'. The obstacle course with blood alcohol goggles and mobile phones also outlined to students the importance of withstanding risk factors when driving. A big thank you to ROADwhyz leader, Michelle Davis, for her emotive Zoom presentation that undoubtedly left a mark on students and emphasised the impact that poor choices on the road can have on others. A powerful day for Year 10 students!
17.01.2022 A very special evening as our Year 12 cohort came together for the final time. It is wonderful to be able to celebrate with them as they finished their HSC Examinations this week. Good luck Year 12 and we can’t wait to hear about where your journey takes you next.
17.01.2022 Our Drama department is still going full steam ahead until the end of the year! To celebrate NAIDOC Week, students in Year 9 Drama spent some time with Miss Pegrum and Mrs Carr workshopping an Australian play. Some wonderful discussions took place before staging a selected extract and then viewing a scene from the play online. The students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and look forward to participating in more workshops like this. ... Year 12 Drama students viewed a streamed performance of Norm and Ahmed - one of their prescribed HSC texts. Normally seen live, but due to COVID-19, many innovative methods have been trialled in order for the students to continue their learning. Over 350 other drama students in the state tuned in for the streamed viewing.
15.01.2022 Introducing....Rose. In keeping with the theme, Hyacinth's calf has been named Rose. Thank you to everyone who suggested names. Two more calves have been born - Violet and Chilli. An apt name, Chilli was born during the recent cold weather. They are all so cute!... We are anxiously awaiting the birth of several more calves at the Olive Grove property.
13.01.2022 Year 7 Pastoral Classes participated in a competition run by their Leader of Wellbeing, Mr Geoffrey. Students had to create a class poster during Pastoral Classes. 1st place was awarded to 7 Blue (who may have had a slight advantage with help from Miss Bayliss who is also an art teacher). Their prize is Marvin the Meerkat, the mascot that the class gets to look after for the week until the next challenge. Well done also to 7 White who came a close second. I wonder which will be the next class to win Marvin!
10.01.2022 It's a girl! Hyacinth (named after Mrs Bucket) calved earlier this week at the school's Olive Grove property. Hyacinth was donated to the Agriculture faculty by Elite Poll Herefords. This cute bundle of joy needs a name! Please comment below with your suggestions. We will announce her name in two weeks.
09.01.2022 Year 7 Food Technology students have been learning about Aboriginal foods and cooking methods. They have cooked a delicious kangaroo stir fry.
08.01.2022 This year St Joseph's teamed up with 2NM/Power FM, St Vincent de Paul and Muswellbrook PCYC in order to help those less fortunate in our community. Today the school handed over our hampers to the Muswellbrook PCYC. The school community rose to the challenge with over 30+ baskets gathered. This is an amazing effort for all involved. Like always, we are very proud of the generosity that this school exhibits, particularly given how challenging 2020 was for everyone.
08.01.2022 Year 7 Film Music: Students in Year 7 have been working extremely hard on learning all about Film Music and why it’s vital for conveying emotion, action and atmosphere. The students even learnt the bass line from the Mission Impossible Theme in only 30 minutes!
07.01.2022 The St Joseph’s Guitar Masterclasses meet every Wednesday in the Music and Drama rooms. We have an Extension Masterclass lead by the Master himself, Mr Douglass! In this jam session students learn the finer art of guitar solos, expression, phrasing and the skills of working in a large group. We also have a Beginners Masterclass with Mrs Dent and Mrs Edwards. So far we have learnt the chords C, G, Em and D all in three weeks! Everyone is welcome, so come along and rock out!
06.01.2022 Last week our Year 12 Drama students completed the practical component of their HSC. Two NESA markers over two days watched four individual performances. With COVID restrictions in place, the group performance did not take place this year. Two other students submitted a set design and promotion and program material in late August. Students spent many hours preparing their Individual Projects and we wish them all the best for the results that will be released in December.
06.01.2022 Today we farewelled our Year 12 students after their awards ceremony. Not even Covid could stop our traditional 'clapping out' ceremony. Good bye and good luck Year 12! Enjoy the next step in your journey.
