21.01.2022 From Little Things Big Things Grow . With our newly established native plant nursery flourishing after the great work by last year’s Year 9s, two classes of Middle School students last week had the opportunity to experience gardening. Mr Casanova's Year 8 PC group and Mr Kannussaar's Year 9 RE class each spent a lesson thinning out the seedling "forest" that had grown over the summer school holidays, ably supported by environmental guru Ms Kuerschner. ... The remaining seedlings have now been provided with the best opportunity to thrive - prior to being planted out in appropriate locations around the Lower Eyre Peninsula later this year. There will be more Middle School visits to the nursery in the meantime, with weeding the primary activity. With Catholic Social Teachings a core component of students' Religious Education curriculum, our native plant propagation project provides a practical and relevant way to "Care for God's Creation" and actively supports Pope Francis' "Laudato Si" encyclical. It is also important to note that assistance from external agencies Trees ForLife, Greening Australia and the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board has been vital with the initial setup and will continue to be so if ongoing success of the project is to occur. #treesforlife #greeningaustralia #plantingseeds #plantingtrees

20.01.2022 Happy retirement Mr Morris! Mr Andrew Morris has a part of the St Joseph’s School family for the past 42 years (commenced in 1978), as a teacher of Drama, English and Religious Education, and for some of that time served as a dedicated, faith-filled Deputy Principal. This is a very impressive milestone of 42 significant years of service in one community. In his life and work, Andrew has truly embodied the Josephite charism of selfless service, based on a strong Christian fait...h and sense of justice. He has been incredibly generous in his hospitality, support of students and staff, and his commitment to many school musicals. Andrew’s passion for theatre has provided opportunities for thousands of students over the years to develop their skills and excel. Andrew has been a keeper of the Josephite flame in so many ways and he leaves us, students and staff present and past, with a legacy of wonderful memories and sincere gratitude for all that he has contributed. To honour this incredible service, the Performing Arts Centre will from next year be re-named, the ‘Morris Theatre’. He will also be long remembered by many for being the voice of ‘Sports Day’ for many, many, many years! Andrew recently said one of his highlights was being able to teach in the same school as his son, Mr Joe Morris (and we are sure he meant to include his wife, Mrs Jane Morris, in that sentence as well)! As you would know from previous posts, Andrew was a very deserving recipient of the 2020 ‘Rowan Ramsey Community Award’ this year for his dedication and service to St Joseph’s School. We wish him all the very best for his retirement and we will certainly miss seeing Andrew’s smiling face around school and hope he remembers to pop in and visit from time to time (if he is not too busy surfing!) 17.01.2022 Happy Retirement Mr Rowe! The St Joseph’s School community has been fortunate to have Mr Kym Rowe as a teacher here since 1992. Kym has been a passionate advocate for Geography, the environment and the arts and has directed countless school musicals. Kym is a talented musician and will be greatly missed leading music at our liturgies, school and staff events. It would be hard to find someone more committed to the Parish and our school, and this was recognised two years ago w...hen Kym was the recipient of the ‘Rowan Ramsey Community Award’. In recent times, Kym has established a mentoring program in his role as Chaplain, strengthening the bond between school and parish and providing additional support to those who need it. Mr Rowe, you will be sorely missed for your wisdom, your passion and the unquantifiable contribution you had made to our St Joseph’s School community. We wish Kym and his wife Anne all the best as they both settle into retirement life. Enjoy your time with your ever growing family! 11.01.2022 What is happening at St Joe's? With all the building movement on our SJS Soccer Oval at the moment, everyone has been asking the question, 'What's going on?'. Well it may look a bit 'interesting' as you drive past our school on Mortlock Tce for the next 12 months or so, but it will certainly be worth it. Check out this fly through from Russell and Yelland Architects of our exciting new Primary School Building and Pre-School due to open early in 2022.... Once the building works are complete the transportable buildings currently residing on our oval will be removed (phew!) Catholic Education South Australia #RaisingHeartsAndMinds #sjssnaps

11.01.2022 Sound on! What a fabulous way to start a Friday morning. Our Reception Year 5 students (and their teachers) joined in with the singing and actions to Peter Combes’s famous songs. Peter's songs are funny and irresistibly catchy, and it is thought that almost every child in every School in Australia knows the songs and actions to ‘Wash Your Face in Orange Juice (Mr Clicketty Cane)’, and we all had fun joining in with the silliness too. The audience participation was fabulous ...and we loved seeing Maya do the actions to one of Peters songs while he sang along. Little Reception student, Jimi even requested a song at the end of the concert and to his surprise Peter agreed to sing it if everyone agreed to join in. Peter’s visit got the staff talking about when they went to his concerts when they were young children and some even remember having his records, cassette tapes and VHS tapes. Thank you for visiting us Peter Combe, we had a great time! Catholic Education South Australia #sjssnaps #RaisingHeartsAndMinds Peter Combe

02.01.2022 Happy New Year Friends! It is certainly a Happy New Year for these two aspiring young actors from SJS, Tasmin Durdin and Eden Scott who have been selected to participate in the ‘Junior Theatre Festival Australia’ Pilot Program to pilot a brand new musical on behalf of the creators in the USA (Music Theatre International). Tasmin and Eden are currentlyl participating in a week-long workshop in Adelaide which commenced yesterday. The purpose of the Pilot Workshop program is to ...offer students the chance to perform an adaptation of a new musical in a workshop setting. These shows are in development and not yet released for public performance. It is where they test scripts and scores for the authors on behalf of Music Theatre International Australasia. Students rehearse the music, choreography and dialogue in a workshop environment with an informal presentation at the end for an audience made up of authors, creators and families of participants. Tasmin and Eden will be performing with other students who love musicals and much as they do, but one of the most valuable elements of participating in the pilot program, is getting to work with industry professionals from Broadway. They will work with the team from iTheatrics New York, who create the Broadway JR, KIDS and ONLINE EDITION musicals. This year, they have a great blend of American and Australian talent leading the pilot workshops. We wish Tasmin and Eden the most fabulous time and we look forward to them bringing back and sharing their talents at St Joe’s, especially as it is a SJS Musical year for us (and aren’t we all just busting to know what our Direction Team has chosen for us this year)! Enjoy girls! Catholic Education South Australia #RaisingHeartsAndMinds #sjssnaps

01.01.2022 Pancake Perfection It has been another very successful Shrove Tuesday filled with teamwork, precision organisation, lots of maple syrup and an insane amount of pancake shaker mixers, which resulted in close to 800 pancakes being made for the students. It was a huge effort by staff and students combined, to ensure that there were lots of happy faces and plenty of pancakes to go around. Some members of the newly elected Primary SRC helped serve the pancakes to Primary classes, ...whilst the Year 12 Integrated Learning Religion and Spirituality class, along with Year 12 Student Leaders, prepared pancakes for the Secondary levels as part of their first task about charity and outreach. A huge thank you to our APRIM, Ms Nicole Russell, for her organisation and coordination of this activity. A big thanks must go to Mrs Cathie Story who delivered piping hot pancakes for the staff to enjoy at recess. Catholic Education South Australia #sjssnaps #RaisingHeartsAndMinds #shrovetuesday
