22.01.2022 MARCH 22ND 2020 REUNION CANCELLATION NOTICE. Unfortunately it has been necessary to cancel the Reunion next Sunday due to concerns over the COVID-19 virus. Depending on how this pandemic unfolds an attempt to organise a Reunion later this year may be considered.... Stay well everyone!

20.01.2022 This enquiry recently came from a former student. He wrote: Hi, I am just wondering if you might be able to confirm that Gerry Petrie passed away earlier this year? He had a great influence on me and many others whilst at Joeys. Thanks. An enquiry to former school secretary Patricia Insall confirmed this sad news. Here is Pats reply: I am sad to say that Gerry did pass away. He was a fabulous teacher and he helped so many young boys become confident, my Stephen as well.... Below are the death notice and funeral notice found in the on-line classifieds of the Herald Sun Newspaper - PETRIE. Gerard Francis OAM 10.2.1935 - 8.2.2017 Loved husband of Marie. To allow us to share the highs and lows of a life based on an education from St Josephs Technical School, South Melbourne a Reunion will be held in November 2018 to recognise the 30th Anniversary of the closing of the school in 1988. More details later.

20.01.2022 Hi everyone, well it was a fantastic full school Reunion on Sunday 18th November 2018. A very good attendance was matched by Melbournes perfect weather. Thank you to Principal Simon Millar for allowing us to use the school facilities at Galilee Regional Catholic Primary School (previously the site of St Josephs Tech). Our timing was excellent as the school art show was last week and it proved a wonderful backdrop to our event. You will see some of the work in the accompanyi...ng photos. Our eldest attendee on the day was Ken "Feathers" Bird who was enrolled in 1939. In 2016 Frank Hillas had taken that honour being enrolled in 1932 but sadly he passed away earlier this year. Thanks to everyone who assisted on the day including our cooks from the Port Melbourne Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society who donated their time in return for a donation to the organisation. Finally a special thanks to the three man Reunion Committee for their efforts - Jim Power, Felix Goodyear & Tony Allday. PS Thanks to Joseph Mielak for several of the photos. See more

20.01.2022 2018 will be the 30th Anniversary of the closing of the school. To mark the occasion a Reunion will be held in October or November, 2018. The youngest student would now be in his early 40s. Fortunately the school grounds and former Brothers residence are still in place to help us recall the many memories. More details in coming months. If you wish to be part of the organising committee please let me know (Tony) via my email address [email protected].

17.01.2022 May the politicians and business leaders of the world show great vision in 2020, by setting aside the allure of power and wealth and work from the heart to provide a better future for all earths inhabitants and the environment.

17.01.2022 WHY TEXTING AND DRIVING AT THE SAME TIME SUCKS... The driver wrote, "I rlly shld pul ovr to text ths, but fk it - I can do both...." Not likely he ever knew what happened - the rail hit him square in the torso and pushed him through the front and back seats and the tailgate... HAVE A HAPPY EASTER - DRIVE SAFELY

14.01.2022 HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OLD BOYS AND YOUR FAMILIES. May 2017 bring you Good Health and Happiness. This is also an opportune time to remember those who enabled us to reap the benefits of an education at St Josephs Technical School, South Melbourne - our parents or guardians, the Christian Brothers and the lay teachers, other support staff and those who volunteered countless hours to raise funds for the betterment of the school and its students. Thank you to all of them.

11.01.2022 This time with Corona virus or COVID-19 has certainly been challenging, more so for some than others and in a variety of ways. What it has done too is highlight the many benefits of modern technology. Many times I have read comments on this site that "it is decades since we have seen each other". Well, why wait for a Reunion - although we still want to see you there - there are many ways to contact each other, both seeing & hearing each other, regardless of you live, no travel required. Skype, Zoom, Google Meets, Microsoft Teams & Facetime are just a few of the platforms out there that can be used. Make an effort to contact your mate and get things happening.

11.01.2022 Thank you Max Harrup for supplying these photos of "1949 South Melbourne Christian Brothers Technical School Gymnastic Display" at South Melbourne Town Hall.

10.01.2022 As we know the classrooms at St Josephs Technical School, South Melbourne fell silent at the end of the last term in 1988. In 1993 younger students returned to the grounds as Galilee Regional Catholic Primary School opened its doors following the closure of four local Catholic Primary schools.... Congratulations to all concerned as the school celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2018 Thankfully we are still able to enjoy the surrounds today. St Josephs Tech full school Reunion Sunday 18th November 2018

10.01.2022 The Australian Story The first invitation to the Christian Brothers to minister within the Church in Australia occurred in 1832, during the life of Blessed Edmund Rice. However it was not until 1843, at the invitation of Archbishop Polding, that the first Irish Brothers arrived in Sydney for a short period. The Brothers returned in 1868 to Melbourne under the leadership of Brother Patrick Ambrose Treacy at the invitation of Bishop Goold. In that first party were Brothers Patr...ick Ambrose Treacy, Dominic Fursey Bodkin, John Barnabas Lynch and Patrick Joseph Nolan. They arrived in Port Philip Bay on the Donald McKay on November 18th, 1868. The first school was at St. Francis in Elizabeth Street, Melbourne and its establishment caused quite an excited stir among many of the Irish Immigrants who had made Melbourne their home. Over the ensuing few years schools were established in East Melbourne (1871), South Melbourne (1874), Brisbane (1875), Ballarat and Dunedin New Zealand (1876), St. Kilda and Geelong (1878), Adelaide (1879) and Balmain (1887) in Sydney. Over time the Christian Brothers established or helped staff over 120 schools in every Australian State and Territory. Four Australian Provinces of Christian Brothers were in existence before the formation of EREA in 2007. The four Provinces were; St. Patricks [Tasmania and Victoria], St. Francis Xavier [Queensland the Northern Territory], St. Marys [New South Wales and the ACT] and Holy Spirit [South Australia and Western Australia]. 05.01.2022 Here are some flags/pennants from the School Reunion Collection which are put on display at Reunions. It is hoped to have a Reunion sometime in 2021 but it will all depend on the course COVID-19 takes.

05.01.2022 A Time to Reflect Spend time in reflection about our connection to each other. If we are feeling challenged and overwhelmed or fearful, lets take a minute to think through the things we must be grateful for. Reflect on what might come from our time in isolation, a renewed sense of peace? An exodus from our materialism and greed? An enlightenment of equality? A collective sense of human connectedness and compassion? A desire to end global warming and protection of our natural environment? A gift from the Holy Spirit to end poverty and stand up for the oppressed, marginalised and vulnerable? The times to come may be difficult. They may also offer a chance for us to find a new direction, take a better path, and maybe build a better world. (Author unknown).
