18.01.2022 YOGA THE MOTHER OF ALL ARTS Ancient Indian texts describe six art forms for enriching human life: Yogika, Mallika, Natya, Sangitika, Vyavaharik and Dhanushya. ...The eight limbed yaugika that uplifts every aspect of human existence- moral, physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual- is undoubtedly, the mother of all arts. The influence of yoga is visible in the case of dance. Some of the postures in classical dance bear a striking resemblance to asanas in yoga. The three virbhadrasana-s, for instance, evoke the vigorous tandava dance. An interesting story of Virbhadra, the warrior bearing a bow and arrow, an axe and a three pointed spear, is narrated by kalidasa in the epic poem, Kumarsambhava. In the tale, king Daksha, the father in law of Siva, was unhappy that his daughter, a princess had married a hermit. The king performed a sacrifice without inviting his own daughter Sati and his illustrious son in law. Despite the rebuff, Sati attended the yajna, where deeply offended by the insult of being ignored by her own parents, she immolated herself in the sacrificial fire. Lord Siva ,overcome with fury, pulled a strand of hair from his tangled locks and struck it forcefully against the ground, from which the mighty warrior, Virbhadra was born. Virbhadra, leading Siva’s army, stormed into Daksha’s kingdom and destroyed the Yajna, forced the devas and rishis to flee the site of sacrifice, and decapitated Daksha. The worthy warrior, born of a single strand of Siva’s hair is the personification of valour, prowess, courage and ferocity arising out of righteous anger. Virbhadrasana, the asana that bears the name of this powerful warrior, has three forms. These three postures exude the dynamism of the character of their namesake. They energise and revitalise not only the practitioner, but also the onlooker. #yoganusasanam #yogakarona #arogyayoga #iyengaryoga #yogalife #virbhadrasana

11.01.2022 Uttanasana BKS Iyengar says The heart beats are slowed down and the spinal nerves rejuvenated. Any depression felt in the mind is removed if one holds the pos...e for two minutes or more. The posture is a boon to people who get excited quickly, as it soothes the brain cells. After finishing the asana, one feels calm and cool, the eyes start to glow and the mind feels at peace. It takes a long time to get to this point of quietening. Between now and then we work at getting the legs completely straight and firm. We learn how to draw up the knee caps and firm the quadriceps, and then to maintain it. We learn to take the torso down without pulling on the sacrum and the hamstrings. We cannot use force. The use of force is the ego driving the asana. The ego causes a struggle. The asana needs to involve a passivity in the brain and an activity in the muscles. Although there is activity in the muscles there is no unnecessary muscular tension. This brings serenity to the mind. You cannot experience peace if there is an unending struggle in the body. #yoganusasanam #bksiyengar #iyengaryogadelhi #uttanasana #yogaathome #yogaformind

08.01.2022 Urdhva Prasarita Padasana The path of yoga is a spiritual quest. Fitness, however, is the most valuable side effects of asana-sadhana. The practice of Urdhva P...rasarita Padasana reduces excess fat, especially around the hips and abdomen. However it’s a mistake to do the asanas excessively or in isolation for the purpose of losing extra inches. It should be done as a part of the sequence and only attempted after preceding asanas. Asanas are not consumer goods, and as such, no asana should be practiced merely for its physical benefits. While lifting the legs waist tends to lift along with the legs. Consciously lower the waist and keep the lumber region in contact with the floor as the legs straighten. By keeping the weight over the feet we can lower the waist down and keep the lumber region in contact with the floor. But this we can do gradually after practising for long time. #yogapractice #iyengaryogaworldwide #yoganusasanam #iyengaryogazoom #bksiyengaryoga #iyengaryoga #yogaformind #yogaathome #urdhvaprasaritpadasana

02.01.2022 UTTANASANA TUNING THE STRINGS OF THE CELESTIAL VEENA We guage the suppleness of the body by the mobility of the spine. The condition of the spine however, det...ermines not only physical well being, but also our life force and spiritual strength. In yogic literature, the spine is often refered to as the Merudanda- a term which collectively includes the vertebral column, the spinal cord and the sensory and motor nerves emanating from it. Darsana upanishad has bestowed the Merudanda with another beautiful name -the Veena danda or the stem of the celestial Veena. It is comprised of two round gourds connected on the ends of a long hollow cylinder. These strings can be tightened or adjusted by means of pegs. The strings run over small wooden frets. The Veena is the instrument of Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. The name Veena danda is the most fitting metaphor for the spinal column, which is the source of all human attributes like wisdom, intellect, sensation, emotions, imagination, memory, creativity, ego and morality. The brain is the gourd at the upper end and the spinal column, the hollow stem of the instrument. The nerve fibre emanating from the brain are the strings, and the spinal vertebrae are the frets. The strumming of these strings is accomplished by breathing. Our physical Veena needs to be maintained just like the musical one. The nerve strings must be lovingly nurtured and firmly stretched at all times so that they resonate at every level: physical, mental, moral, intellectual and spiritual . If a portion of the Veena strings is excessively stretched in the wrong direction, the strings will snap. Similarly, if the lower spine holds back and the upper portion extends forward, there is a risk of injury. The stiffened muscles of the back must be softened and spread thinly and smoothly over the bones like butter on a slice of bread. Uttanasana is the surrender of one’s soul to the divine spirit. Mindful practice of uttanasana , with focus on the breath, becomes an act of rhythmic, effortless submission to one’s higher self or Inner being. #uttanasana #yoganusasanam #iyengaryoga #bksiyengar #yogakarona #arogyayoga
