25.01.2022 National Walk Safely to School Day is today! While the event can't go ahead in Victoria due to Stage Three and Four restrictions, the event's objectives are a timely reminder to all children and adults that walking regularly significantly improves physical and mental health and general well-being. Its vital children remain physically active - every day - and walking regularly is the best exercise. ... Try walking around the block, in the park, up and down the stairs, to the shops and with your dog (if you have one). But remember, until they are ten, children must ALWAYS hold an adult's hand when crossing the road. https://facebook.com/events/s/national-walk-safely-to-school/286486872409533/?ti=as

20.01.2022 ~ GO GIRLS CYBER EDITION ~ On Tuesday October, 13th a group of Grade 5/6 girls were privileged to be able to take part in Go Girl’s Cyber event. Run each year by Deakin University, COVID restrictions provided our girls with a unique opportunity to participate in this inspiring event. The event began with cyber safety, but also a brilliant suggestion for setting yourself up to create a positive digital footprint to assist the girls in their future study and career pursuits. T...he girls were then sent to virtual google meets with their assigned speaker - we had 3 groups in total each hooked into a different guest speaker. The girls were exposed to the expertise of a variety of women who are top in their fields. Guest speakers included women who work on the international space station, work for google, criminal investigation and other fields. The girls had opportunities to ask questions of their speaker. Although many were unsure what to expect and were not even sure they would like it, we are so proud of the girls for grabbing this opportunity with both hands. To be honest I was expecting something a little more boring and not as interactive . I was thinking it would be boring I wasn’t expecting for it to be as interactive as it was and to be honest I was sort of expecting it to be boring!! But it definitely wasn’t!! Afterwards the feedback from the girls was exceptionally positive, with many not realising how intertwined cyber skills are to almost all career choices. ‘That lots of jobs are to do with IT not just jobs that are mainly IT. That you don’t have to be great at math to get a job in tech ! We are grateful to Deakin University for proving this wonderful event and hope that now it has worked remotely our girls might have this opportunity again. Special thanks to Mrs Piasente for her assistance on the day and to Miss Arthur for her tech support for this event. ~

16.01.2022 COIN TRAIL FUNDRAISER #KINDSCHOOLS There was much excitement leading up to the Youth Off The Streets Kind Schools coin trail challenge last week to see who had the longest trail. With the Room B taking out the competition with the longest line and Room C having the most valuable line. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the senior #kindschools Youth Off The Streets coin trail fundraiser for this wonderful Charity. We managed to raise an amazing total of $1031.50.... Why were we raising money for Youth Off The Streets? As part of the religion program in 5/6 we have been looking at those less fortunate than ourselves and searching for a practical way in which we can contribute to better opportunities for those less fortunate than us. The 5/6 students identified the homeless of our community, especially the youth. Youth Off The Streets is a non-denominational community organisation working for disadvantaged young people who may be homeless, drug dependent and/or recovering from abuse. Youth Off The Streets supports these young people as they work to turn their lives around and overcome immense personal trauma such as neglect, physical, psychological and/or emotional abuse. It is their goal that these young people will leave our care drug free, with a high school education, living skills and a full-time or part time job in hand. Since opening in 1991, Youth Off The Streets has grown from a single food van delivering meals to young homeless people on the streets of Kings Cross to a major youth specific agency offering a full continuum of care through delivery of a wide range of services. Their 35 services include aboriginal programs, crisis accommodation, alcohol and other drug services, counselling, accredited high schools, outreach and residential programs. Volunteers support us every step of the way. Father Chris Riley's Youth Off The Streets, together with the money raised from our schools coin challenge, hope to change the lives of 47,000 homeless young people in Australia who experience neglect, abuse or sleep rough outdoors. Every young person deserves to feel safe and supported and that's why we're reaching out to you for help.

07.01.2022 JUNIOR ATHLETICS Friday 4th December, saw the running of the Junior Athletic Sports on our school oval. Unfortunately COVID19 restrictions prevented parents from attending much to everyone's disappointment. Without parental help, grade 6 students from the leadership teams manned and operated the events with staff taking students around to the different activities. This worked really well with the senior boys and girls taking their roles very seriously and they demonstrated in...itiative and leadership in successfully managing their particular events. The junior pupils were full of enthusiasm and applied themselves wholeheartedly to each event. They are to be congratulated for their efforts and sportsmanship - well done. The school was very happy to be able to go ahead with the sports in a year where most things have had to be cancelled. Results: Coyne (Blue) 178.5 pts, Phelan (Red) 172.5 pts, Reardon (Gold) 160.4 pts. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Mr Hughes, who always goes above and beyond for our students.

04.01.2022 What a challenging, difficult and emotional time it has been this past term. The staff at St Laurence's wish to thank all our families for hanging in there and getting the job done again, under such overwhelming circumstances. We wish to thank our dedicated staff for their continued e...nthusiasm and dedication. Wishing you all a very happy, safe holiday break. We can't wait to see you all back at St Laurence's next term. 03.01.2022 *15/2 - UPDATED INFORMATION* The following letter has been emailed out to St Laurence families: I would like to let you know about how our school will be operating for the next few days during this period of state lock down.... We will do all we can to support the wellbeing of our students and families at this uncertain time. Please take the opportunity in this lovely weather to have some family time if possible. This could include: cooking, reading, helping in the garden or on the farm, playing board games, riding bikes, walking and other exercise. It is Shrove Tuesday tomorrow so pancakes could be on the menu! We will also be sending some suggested learning activities that your child may engage with tomorrow and Wednesday. This will be sent out by the end of the school day. This learning does not require submission. Although it is short notice, we are going to conduct phone parent/teacher interviews tomorrow and Wednesday afternoons from 12 pm until 3.30 pm. Bookings will be open this afternoon on PAM. Please don’t be concerned if this is too short a notice for you as we will make alternative arrangements TBC. If you have any concerns please contact your child’s teacher or myself via email. Take care, stay safe and hopefully we will resume as usual on Thursday. Kind Regards, Liz O'Loughlin

03.01.2022 FRENCH DAY French Day offers students an opportunity to use language learned during the year in a meaningful and purposeful way. Our students worked very hard in the lead up to French Day this year, learning or revising French, learning songs, and new games using French as their main language. Activities were restricted to their own classrooms, with Grade 5 and 6 students preparing and running each of the activities. The fives and sixes are to be commended for the very profes...sional way they conducted themselves, the care they took in preparing the items used on the day and for keeping students in the French Language. The junior and middle classes worked very hard to learn the language they need to play games and earn their credit cards in order to buy things. The students enjoyed Flemming's Berries' waffles and sorbet and everyone enjoyed the film 'A Monster in Paris'. I look forward to next year's French Day, when hopefully, parents can come again and participate. Merci to all those who helped to make it such a special day. Cordialement Mme Gatehouse
