25.01.2022 Well done to our Artist of the Week, year 8 Photography and Video student Maya Budiman. Maya’s series of self-portraits are a stunning application of her photographic skills and knowledge. Her manipulation of lighting, camera positioning and focus are particularly strong, and they combine beautifully to create a warm and personal space. Maya’s photos reflect both her passion for visual imagery and technical maturity that belies her years. Well done Maya! #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL

25.01.2022 Each week our St Leonard’s College Chaplain, Reverend Judith Watkins, provides an uplifting and encouraging reflection for our College community in our weekly newsletter that invites our College community to nurture our spirits, whatever faith or non-faith background we may have. Last week she shared this prayer by Leunig which we thought the broader community may also enjoy, particularly pertinent in recent times as our staff and students return to St Leonard’s College; a place where all ‘may find acceptance and belonging’. #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL

24.01.2022 Our year 9 hikers are just about to head off on the Great South West walking track! It’s wonderful to see our students being able to immerse themselves back into some of these highly engaging experiential activities in the great outdoors. We are confident they will enjoy the adventure ahead of them and wish them well. #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL

24.01.2022 The Parents Website by Independent Schools Victoria shares a helpful article outlining why literacy isn't the only type of ABC for young children to learn - understanding Anatomy, Boundaries and Consent is increasingly important for children to have the tools to navigate these topics. It’s never too early to start having this conversation and it's a dialogue that should continue into the teenage years. Giving children the language, and confidence, to discuss things that might otherwise be uncomfortable is an important life skill. #StLeonardsCollege #StLeoanrds #STL https://theparentswebsite.com.au/10-childrens-books-on-the/

21.01.2022 Last week our year 4 students celebrated their 2020 learning journey through their International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme Exhibition, which was an inquiry into Social Justice issues. An element of this was the students' use of art as a mode to express their developing understanding of these issues. The artworks were displayed in our new Leonardian Centre and students were recorded describing their artworks as a part of their online sharing for the Exhibition. The below imagery is a snapshot of the amazing artworks they created. Well done to all our year 4 students and the staff who have nurtured them throughout the inquiry. #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL

16.01.2022 Well done to our Artist of the Week, year 5 student Amelia Nankervis, on her impressive kookaburra artwork. Amelia shared, "My interest in kookaburras started at the start of the second lockdown. I was watercolour painting some animals that live in Australia, mostly wombats, wallabies, kangaroos, other Aussie birds, and then a kookaburra. I was pleased with my results of that first kookaburra so I painted more. Those weren’t as good as the first, but I kept working on them. I... found some ways I could work on them without even doing much. I printed out pictures and put them up next to my bed, so I could look at them and notice things about them that I haven’t noticed before. I still use watercolour, as I find it easier to paint with. But I find I make it not look very watery. From the start I was inspired by the works of Beatrix Potter, so I researched more about her. I was also inspired by a lot of people I see and know. Sometimes they influence my artworks. Kookaburras have become my favourite animal, and I paint nearly every day now. Well done Amelia - your dedication, talent and skill are outstanding! #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL See more

14.01.2022 Last week, our year 7 students enjoyed a spectacular experience at Camp Ibis, our permanent campsite on the Banksia Peninsula in the Gippsland Lakes area. Students enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a variety of outdoor adventures, including bush and beach walking, orienteering, sailing, canoeing and more. Whilst undertaking these activities students also learnt about the local environment and history. Our outdoor education program has been designed to expand on students’ current knowledge so that they develop a better understanding of themselves, their capabilities, and how they can use their skills to further their leadership and communication abilities, and contribute to a healthy and sustainable future. #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL

13.01.2022 Well done to our Artist of the Week, year 12 VCE Media student Matthew Annable. My digital photography series is called Rebirth. I think the pressure of society for women to conform to this loss of self is stronger than it is for men which is why I chose to focus in this case on the rebirth of a woman. With a focus on Wedding Photography, Trash the Dress and the digital collage works of David Hockney as sources of inspiration, Matthew’s work pays homage to the feminine with a familial tenderness. We would like to congratulate Matthew for demonstrating a great deal of skill in his craft. #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL

13.01.2022 This week our year 3 students engaged in an exciting, team building ‘Camp-in Experience’ at the College, facilitated by the Outdoor Education team and our Junior School teachers. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience involving a Ninja Warrior course, Indigenous song and damper with a campfire, indoor games, pool games, orienteering, talent show, billy cart building, design and obstacle course. Thoroughly loved by all, it was a very worthwhile and valued experience. A big thank you to our amazing staff who facilitated this memorable experience for our year 3 students! #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL

11.01.2022 On Tuesday 16 February, members of the College’s Academic Directorate gathered virtually for the second of three workshops focused on The Power of Making Thinking Visible. These workshops have been designed in partnership with the Harvard Graduate School of Education and educationalist Ron Ritchhart, with whom the College has collaborated now, as part of an ongoing professional learning program, for over six years. Fittingly, yesterday enabled us to revisit how to make thinki...ng visible at a distance and with Victoria’s snap lockdown and our three days of home learning, this could not have come at a better time! Key reflections from our readings and professional dialogue highlighted the fundamental importance of establishing relationships between teachers and learners, and between learners and learners, to ensure a supportive and connected learning environment whether online or in a physical community. This, after all, is the basis of all learning, and what frees us to think courageously. Another pertinent point reminded us of the primacy of collaboration in the thinking process: learning and thinking are as much a collective enterprise as they are an individual endeavour. And of course, when it comes to our work as educators, we need to model dispositions such as adaptability, flexibility, agility and resilience that is, ultimately, how we teach them, through the ongoing process of enculturation. Worthwhile and timely reflections for all whether at home, behind the screen, or face to face. 07.01.2022 As a result of COVID-19 regulations, our 7.00am music rehearsals are being conducted outdoors in the fresh air. This morning our students enjoyed rehearsing in our new central agora which provides the ideal space for these sessions. Students also rehearsed out the front of our new Leonardian Centre overlooking our beautiful College grounds. Recently our woodwind, brass and singing lessons have also been conducted outdoors. It has been uplifting to hear the musical talents and melodic voices of our young people resonating through the College. #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL

04.01.2022 Today our College marked Remembrance Day with a ceremony that was conducted in our new Leonardian Centre and live-streamed to all classrooms and offices throughout the College. Remembrance Day recognises the day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918. The service included an introduction by Ruby (2021 College Captain), a reading of Flanders Fields by Justin (2021 College Captain), Owen (Year 8) gave a Cello performance, Meg (Year 11) sang the ...Australian National Anthem, Kristian and Lisa (Year 4) carried and placed the wreath, our bugler Jamie (Year 8) played the Last Post and a minute’s silence was held to remember all those who have died in wars. Lest We Forget. #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL #LestWeForget

02.01.2022 Well done to our Artist of the Week, year 6 student Grace Goodwin, on her impressive charcoal drawing. As part of the Year 6 Unit: Express yourself, Grace has been introduced to observational drawing skills and assorted drawing techniques to create a series of unique and personal self-portraits. The sensitivity demonstrated in Grace’s portrait together with the ability to elicit an emotional response through the eyes should be commended. Well done Grace! #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL

02.01.2022 Well done to our Artist of the Week, year 11 student Elle Daniels. Elle shared, "My mixed media artwork focuses on the world’s value and fixation towards possessions and wealth, and how this causes more significant parts of life to be overlooked. The use of bold colours reflect the marketing and manipulation techniques that companies use in order to attract people into purchasing their products. Whilst the vigorous pastel application reflects the flawed industries which are driven by consumerism as well as the impacts that this has on the environment. I aimed for my artwork to be bold and striking in order to catch people's attention, which has been particularly emphasised through the large scale of it and how layered and chaotic it is. Well done, Elle, on your creativity and expression! #StLeonardsCollege #StLeonards #STL
