23.01.2022 Last night at practice, the president of the national association of bellringers (anzab.org.au) Peter Harrisonwho also happens to be our Ringing Masterwas interviewed by the ABC about preparations for Armistice Day ringing and Ringing Remembers (bellringing.org/ringingremembers). The interview will be broadcast as part of the ABC's Armistice Day coverage on Sunday 11th November. Also in the lead-up to Armistice Day, our Captain Murray-Luke Peard will talk to the Friends of St Mary’s Cathedral on Thursday 8th November about the Ringing Remembers initiative to recruit 1,400 new ringers across the world, in memory of the 1,400 ringers who lost their lives in World War I. 21.01.2022 Today we're celebrating with one of our longer serving ringers, Paul Doyle, who turned 70 this week. His brother, Jim, has also joined us from Canberra for morning ringing and the festivities afterwards.

21.01.2022 The bells of St Mary's Cathedral are currently half-muffled for ANZAC Day. We rang them like this before the Vigil Mass last night, and there is a peal attempt this afternoon. The bells will be ringing from 1pm, and all being well we should finish around 4:30pm. EDIT: We were successful with our peal attempt. Details can be found at https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1229100

20.01.2022 This Sunday, on the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, we rememberamongst othersSergeant Arthur Robert Henry Joyner, who is known to have rung at St Mark's, Darling Point, and could well have rung at St Mary's as well. A resident of Paddington, he died 04/12/1916 aged 22 years. The attached image, which has become a well known WWI photograph, was taken by him at ANZAC cove, 8am on 25th April 1915.

18.01.2022 Happy New Year to everyone! The ringers at St Mary's had our usual New Year's Eve practice last night. As has become custom on these special practices, we "fired" the bells as the last bit of ringing we do to ring out the old year. This involves trying to get all the bells to sound almost simultaneously, which is difficult to do. Here is a video with the last bit of firing as we ended our ringing for 2018.

15.01.2022 Today we rang a half muffled Quarter Peal before the 1:10pm lunchtime Mass. We were ringing in memory of Archbishop Emeritus Leonard Faulkner of Adelaide. He was Archbishop of Adelaide when the previous ring of bells from this tower were installed in St Francis Xavier Cathedral in 1996. His funeral was at St Francis Xavier Cathedral on Monday. We were also ringing in memory of one of the ringers from Adelaide who sadly passed away yesterday afternoon. Anne Haskard was a life member of the Australia and New Zealand Association of Bellringers, and a good friend to many Sydney ringers. Here is a video of us ringing our "service touch" - 120 changes of Plain Bob Minor half muffled just before the start of Mass. Details of the Quarter Peal can be found at http://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1231801

14.01.2022 Well, congratulations to our colleagues at The Bell Tower Home of the Swan Bells Perth: you've achieved fame as one of the questions in a Sporcle quiz! Keeping company with some pretty impressive landmarks...

10.01.2022 Today was the unveiling of the memorial plaque to John (Jack) Cummins, who passed away in 2016. The plaque was unveiled by the Dean the Very Rev Don Richardson and with two of Jack's children, Damien and Virginia. After some moving words by ringers and family Fr Don Richardson then blessed the plaque and some handbells were rung. Family and friends of Jack's children were present, along with ringers who knew Jack. We celebrated his life with a special bit of ringing on the tower bells before showing his grandchildren the bells while his children reminisced about their time up in the tower. We were glad to mark Jack's life and importance to the tower with those who knew him, and it was quite apt for his children that it was done on Father's Day.

09.01.2022 The Bells of St Mary's Cathedral are half muffled and about to start ringing for the state funeral of Mr John Johnson KCSG. We will be ringing from 10 to 10:30am.

07.01.2022 Happy Easter from all the bellringers at St Mary's Cathedral. This is a snipet of some of the ringing for Mass on Easter Day.

05.01.2022 Today we're celebrating one of our ringer's birthdays. Richard is living in Australia for a few years and this is his first birthday away from home, so we made sure he enjoyed the day in his current home.

02.01.2022 On Thursday 8th November, our Captain, Murray-Luke Peard, will talk about ringing and "Ringing Remembers", hosted by the Friends of St Mary’s Cathedral. The "Ringing Remembers" initiative aims to commemorate the 1,400 ringers who died in the Great War by recruiting 1,400 new ringers around the world. 01.01.2022 On Sunday we celebrated the 90th birthday of past Tower Captain and distinguished ringer at both St Mary's and St Andrew's, Tom Goodyer. Here is a short clip of the firing in his honour, followed by the opening changes of Stedman Cinques. Tom is ringing the 6th. https://youtu.be/9hzBTHGbuos
