21.01.2022 Congratulations to the St Mary's Cathedral Choir, Sydney Choristers who received the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation today by Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP during today's 10:30am Solemn Mass for the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. 20.01.2022 Friends, since my installation as your Archbishop in 2014, I’ve witnessed first-hand the many strengths of our Church in Sydney: its scale, cultural diversity, ...piety and zeal of its pastors and people. But Our Lord is calling us to become more powerful witnesses to God’s saving love- so our outreach can continue to nurture the faith of future generations of Catholics. On 12 December, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, I will be launching a new Archdiocesan Mission Plan, Go Make Disciples, aimed at making our parishes and other Eucharistic communities true centres of the new evangelisation. To compliment that mission, we all have a responsibility to share our faith stories with others, to help bring others into a closer encounter with Christ. I encourage you to watch my personal faith story, which I have shared in a video on the Go Make Disciples website here: www.gomakedisciples.org.au I trace my own journey from altar boy at St Michael's parish, Lane Cove, a pivotal moment in the Holy Land when I knew I was called to priesthood and later my ministry as your Archbishop, sharing some of the challenges and opportunities I have faced along the way which have helped me grow and nurture my faith and share it with others. I ask for your ongoing prayers as your shepherd, that through your help we may indeed lead many more Sydneysiders to grow in their love for Christ in the years ahead. God Bless you all. #GMDSydney #GoMakeDisciples

04.01.2022 Today we celebrate the Feast of St Martin of Tours, the patron saint of soldiers The cathedral is blessed to have a stained glass window dedicated to St Martin at the south western corner of the cathedral. The imagery is explained below: As a young soldier, Martin encountered a beggar in Amiens. The beggar was unclothed and it was very cold. Martin removed his cloak and with his sword, he cut it in half. He gave this half to the beggar and dressed himself in the remnant. That... night, Martin had a vision in which Christ appeared to him. The vision spoke to him, "Martin, a mere catechumen has clothed me." A catechumen is one who is being instructed in the Christian faith. In the early centuries of Christianity, that was a long process of instruction - and Martin was deeply dedicated to it. About the age of 20, Martin made clear to his superiors that he would no longer fight, following his formed Christian conscience. He refused his pay prior to a battle and announced he would not join in the combat. After this, Martin went on to live a pious life establising monasteries such as the Liguge Abbey. In 371, Martin became the bishop of Tours. On this Remembrance Day, we ask that through the intercession of St Martin of Tours, we pray for all the fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their loved ones and the world.
