15.01.2022 You're going to want to listen to this one, but here's the idea: . The thirst of Jesus for you and I is real. God thirsts for a relationship with us. He thirst...s to save us. He thirsts to heal and restore us. His thirst for us impels him to pursue us. . At this moment, the living God thirsts for you. At this moment, the living God is pursuing you. . One of St. Mother Teresa's reminders to her sisters was the urgent need for each of them to be transfixed and transformed by the thirst of Jesus. It's our starting point. . Here's the idea with the image for this week's episode. We discuss that we as priests are given a share in Jesus's thirst for each and every person. That's why we'll gladly sit in the confessional for hours. That's why at some point along the journey, we radically redirected our entire lives so that we could be in that little box. We thirst to give you God's mercy. In the name of Jesus, we've been pursuing you for years. . The thirst of Jesus proclaimed on Calvary continues in the confessional. . Give it a listen. May provide a paradigm shift for you as you go to confession. https://podcasts.apple.com//he-thirsts-for-y/id1508820894 . PC: @martin.jernberg DC: @kylie.dougherty See more

14.01.2022 Friends this Sunday, we will celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, also called the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. The Feast was est...ablished by Pope Pius XI in 1925 with his encyclical, Quas primas, In the first, to respond to a world that was rejecting Christ amid growing secularism. In these times, when we are challenged in our faith and our ability to worship together due to COVID19, may this special feast remind us that Jesus Christ is indeed Our King who reigns forever. To ask Christ to be your King is to put your trust in His Providence, to commit to fitting your plans into His (not vice versa), so that His will will be done on earth-in-us- as it is in heaven. I encourage you to download dedicated prayer and liturgical resources for families and parishes on this special feast day on Sunday which you’ll find here on the Archdiocese of Sydney website: https://bit.ly/36OXDsn O Jesus, King truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, Reign in our hearts #ChristReigns

13.01.2022 FREQUENT CONFESSION

12.01.2022 Today is the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows which commemorates the seven great sorrows which Mary lived in relation to Her Son, as they are recorded in the Gospel...s or through tradition. Today we are invited to reflect on Mary's deep suffering: 1. At the prophecy of Simeon: "You yourself shall be pierced with a sword - so that the thoughts of many hearts may be laid bare." (Luke 2:35). 2. At the flight into Egypt; "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt." (Mt 2:13). 3. Having lost the Holy Child at Jerusalem; "You see that your father and I have been searching for you in sorrow." (Luke 2:48). 4. Meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary; 5. Standing at the foot of the Cross; "Near the cross of Jesus there stood His mother." (John 19:25). 6. Jesus being taken from the Cross; 7. At the burial of Christ. 08.01.2022 Alongside many other churches around the world, St Mary's Cathedral was lit in red last night to mark Red Wednesday following a Mass celebrated by Dean Fr Don R...ichardson. This annual initiative of the charity, Aid to the Church In Need (ACN) on 25 November, helps raise awareness about the persecution of Christians around the world. ACN has this year focused its attention on the plight of Christians who are kidnapped or unjustly imprisoned because of their faith. As our cathedral is bathed in the blood of martyrs, we stand with the oppressed, acknowledging that we can often take freedom to practice our faith in safety too much for granted in Australia- a freedom denied to many of our fellow Christians around the world.

08.01.2022 The Sacrament of Penance is one of our greatest blessings as Catholics. As St Catherine of Siena said, it is only by weeding the garden of souls that we make sp...ace for virtues to flower. Repentance moves us to reform our lives through the everlasting love and mercy of Christ. By this sacrament we are restored to God’s grace and joined with Him in intimate friendship. As Catholics, we are also called to share that grace we receive through the Sacrament of Penance with others, with a world in need of God’s love and mercy. St Martha’s Strathfield parishioner Jessica Gereis shares in this short video clip her experience of sanctifying grace, of forgiveness in the midst of the Church. As I look towards launching our new Archdiocesan Mission Plan, Go Make Disciples on 12 December, I pray that all our parishes may be true centres of the new evangelisation, leading the faithful closer to Christ through the power of the sacraments. 07.01.2022 Prayer To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come in our tribulation, and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke your patronage also.... Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities. O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness. As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God's Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen.

07.01.2022 This Sunday marks the beginning of the Advent Season. The evergreen Advent wreath will be unveiled and the first of four Advent candles will be lit. The first... candle, which is violet, symbolises hope. Did you know that it is also known as the Prophecy candle in remembrance of the prophets who foretold the birth of Jesus. See more

07.01.2022 Earlier last month, Pope Francis announced that this year will be the Year of St Joseph. Pope Francis describes Saint Joseph as a beloved, tender, loving, obed...ient and accepting father; a father who is creatively courageous and hard-working. Joseph’s spiritual path is not one that explains, but accepts. He is able to accept life as it is, with all its contradictions, frustrations and disappointments. Joseph did not look for shortcuts but confronted reality with open eyes and accepted personal responsibility for it. For this reason, he encourages us to accept and welcome others as they are, without exception, and to show special concern for the weak. 05.01.2022 Friends, since my installation as your Archbishop in 2014, I’ve witnessed first-hand the many strengths of our Church in Sydney: its scale, cultural diversity, ...piety and zeal of its pastors and people. But Our Lord is calling us to become more powerful witnesses to God’s saving love- so our outreach can continue to nurture the faith of future generations of Catholics. On 12 December, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, I will be launching a new Archdiocesan Mission Plan, Go Make Disciples, aimed at making our parishes and other Eucharistic communities true centres of the new evangelisation. To compliment that mission, we all have a responsibility to share our faith stories with others, to help bring others into a closer encounter with Christ. I encourage you to watch my personal faith story, which I have shared in a video on the Go Make Disciples website here: www.gomakedisciples.org.au I trace my own journey from altar boy at St Michael's parish, Lane Cove, a pivotal moment in the Holy Land when I knew I was called to priesthood and later my ministry as your Archbishop, sharing some of the challenges and opportunities I have faced along the way which have helped me grow and nurture my faith and share it with others. I ask for your ongoing prayers as your shepherd, that through your help we may indeed lead many more Sydneysiders to grow in their love for Christ in the years ahead. God Bless you all. #GMDSydney #GoMakeDisciples

05.01.2022 Tonight, before calling it a day, I went out on the balcony overlooking the valley below the cabin I am staying in for vacation and took a last dip in the hot t...ub. As I sat in the pitch black of the dark and the silence of the night, I could see what I believe to be the planet Venus. When I first got in, the light was extraordinarily bright. As minutes passed, though, the light became dimmer as clouds moved between me and the Venus. At times the light flickered as it struggled through various thickness of clouds and a couple times it was not visible at all. The light had not ceased to shine, my ability to see it had. That got me reflecting. In that moment the light from Venus became symbolic of the love of God. The light does not change but my ability to see the light does. The clouds became symbolic of my own sinfulness which diminishes my vision to see God's love; if in a state of mortal sin it blocks my ability altogether. There have been times in my life where I could not see the love of God at all. It wasn't because it wasn't there, but the life I had chosen and the sins I had chosen blocked my ability to see it. There have been times when that light has been diminished as I have allowed worries, fears, and venial sins diminish my ability to see. Then another thought came to me: the light of Venus is a reflected light from the sun. This gave me another perspective. As a Catholic, I am supposed to live a life that reflects the life of Christ. At baptism, a candle was given with the instruction that I have been given the light of Christ and was to be sure that light was kept burning until the day I am called from this life. As sin keeps me from see the light of God's love, so it also prevents me from shining that love to others as well. Either way, sin introduces and promotes darkness. It blinds us to God's love and stymies us from reflecting God's love. In my opinion, there is much darkness in our society now. The fault lines of division rumble like tectonic plates ready to snap. The human person is so debased anymore that unrestricted abortion, all forms of misuse of our sexual faculties, a militant godlessness, and continual infighting plunge us into a great darkness where we so block the vision of the love of God that we think there be no God at all. It as if we have willfully plunged to the depths of the Marianas Trench and wonder why we feel unbelievable pressure and see no light. For some the answer is to introduce more of what we already have; more anger, more infighting, more wrath, more vengeance. It is as if pitch black isn't dark enough. What then do we do? A single candle in an otherwise completely dark room is powerful. The more lights that are lit, the more light breaks into the room. More, still, floods the room with light. More light still, and the room is fully lit. Where is the state of our souls? In darkness wrapped behind a bank of thick and stormy clouds? Or clearly in light and reflecting light? If we have a hard time seeing the love of God and others are having a hard time seeing the love of God in us, it is a sure sign that we have allowed the darkness of mortal sin to choke off the light. I had already resolved tomorrow to see the pastor at Holy Cross is Pigeon Forge to go to confession tomorrow. It is once again time to remove the clouds between me and the love of God so that I may see clearly. It saddens me that so few Catholics regularly if ever use this great sacrament either out of fear or out of pride. Dear reader, if we have a hard time seeing the love of God, perhaps it is because too much sin is blocking that light. Some sin arises from our own actions, some sin arises from our reactions to what has been done to us. There are fewer sins more capable of blocking the visage of God's love than holding grudges...they are like a wall cloud. I invite you, dear reader, to avail yourself of the great sacrament of Reconciliation with the same eagerness and faith of the blind man who walked up to Jesus and said, "Lord, I want to see!" May no desire to hold onto sin block us from seeing the love of God or reflecting the love of God. No sin is worth the price of perpetual darkness.
