07.05.2022 Wishing everyone a blessed day. Let’s reflect on a quote from one of the Doctors of the Eastern Church, St John Chrysostom: Happiness can only be achieved by looking inward and learning to enjoy whatever life has, and this requires transforming greed into gratitude. #stjohnchrysostom #orthodox #faith #byzantine #melkite #greekcatholic #liturgy #inspirational #quote #morningmotivation

02.05.2022 Do you recognise this statue? The statue of Jesus pictured was in the baptistery of our Melkite Church in Waterloo. Sadly, it has disappeared in the move to Darlington. We are hopeful that it may be in the possession of a family or individual. If you know what happened to this original statue or other historical items that were from Waterloo, please get in contact with Abouna Gerges or via social media as we would be interested in photographing pieces for documentation or organising a donation to the Melkite Heritage Display (w/acknowledgement).

25.01.2022 How many times was St. Michael the Archangel mentioned in the bible? Scripture often refers to Archangel Michael as either Chief Prince, the Great Prince, Archangel, Chief Archangel. Although some would question, it seems he was mentioned 7 times, directly or indirectly. See the below, would you agree?? But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, The Lord ...rebuke you. ~ Jude 1:9 At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. ~ Daniel 12:1 The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia, ~ Daniel 10:13 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. ~ 1 Thessalonians 4:16 But I will tell you what is inscribed in the book of truth: there is none who contends by my side against these except Michael, your prince. ~ Daniel 10:21 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers, ~ Matthew 13:41 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole worldhe was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. ~ Revelation 12:7-9 #stmichael #stmichaelthearchangel #angelofgod #archangelmichael #archangel #chiefprince #bible #biblescripture #biblestudy #oldtestament #newtestament #catholic #catholicchurch #melkite #stmichaelsmelkitechurch

25.01.2022 James of the Marches Jacob de Marchia, commonly known in English as St. James of the Marches, O.F.M., was an Italian Friar Minor, preacher and writer. He was a Papal legate and Inquisitor. Born: 1 September 1393, Monteprandone, Italy... Died: 28 November 1476, Naples, Italy Full name: Dominic Gangala Education: University of Perugia Feast: 28 November Major shrines: Monteprandone, Ascoli Piceno Meet one of the fathers of the modern pawnshop! James was born in the Marche of Ancona, in central Italy along the Adriatic Sea. After earning doctorates in canon and civil law at the University of Perugia, he joined the Friars Minor and began a very austere life. He fasted nine months of the year; he slept three hours a night. SaintBernardine of Siena told him to moderate his penances. James studied theology with SaintJohn of Capistrano. Ordained in 1420, James began a preaching career that took him all over Italy and through 13 Central and Eastern European countries. This extremely popular preacher converted many people250,000 at one estimateand helped spread devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. His sermons prompted numerous Catholics to reform their lives, and many men joined the Franciscans under his influence. With John of Capistrano, Albert of Sarteano, and Bernardine of Siena, James is considered one of the four pillars of the Observant movement among the Franciscans. These friars became known especially for their preaching. To combat extremely high interest rates, James establishedmontes pietatisliterally, mountains of charitynonprofit credit organizations that lent money on pawned objects at very low rates. Not everyone was happy with the work James did. Twice assassins lost their nerve when they came face to face with him. James died in 1476, and was canonized in 1726. 20.01.2022 Feast Day of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal On this day, we commemorate the apparition of Our Blessed Mother to Saint Catherine and celebrate the vision that Our Lady revealed to her the Miraculous Medal. It was in Paris, in 1830, a period when the Catholic Church was under attack from its many enemies. St Catherine had a vision of the Blessed Virgin, her beauty indescribable, standing on a globe. Rays of light shone forth from the precious gems on the Blessed Mother’s h...ands. Catherine saw an oval frame formed around her, bearing the words, O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. A voice said to Catherine, Have a medal struck after this model. Persons who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck. The image was approved upon a medal that Our Blessed Mother designed herself. The first batch was produced in 1832. Soon after, the devotion became global, and the medal was being worn by millions. Stories of miracles started pouring in from faithfuls who wear and pray the devotion to the Medal of the Immaculate Conception, (originally named). The front of the medal shows Our Lady standing on the globe (assumed into heaven), as her feet stand on the head of the serpent (Mary as our protection). The oval-shaped medal is circled with, O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. At the back of the medal, twelve stars (12 Apostles) surround a large M from which a cross (Jesus’ Cross and Redemption) arises. Below the M are two flaming hearts (the burning love of Jesus and Mary for us). Saint Catherine asked the Blessed Mother why rays of light did not shine forth from some gems of her hands. Our Lady answered that such darkness represented the graces which people forget to ask. Therefore, on this day, let us not only remember to wear the medal or carry it with us, but pray with devotion and ask with faith for her intercession and special graces, which have made countless of miracles possible. #stmary #blessedmother #virginmary #motherofchrist #theotokos #miraculousmedal #mothermary #ImmaculateHeartOfMary #ourlady #mothermaryprayforus #stmaryscathedral #catholicchurch #catholic #melkite #stmichaelsmelkitechurch

18.01.2022 Saint Francesco Antonio Fasani Francis Anthony Fasani, O.F.M. Conv. was an Italian friar of the Order of Conventual Friars Minor who has been declared a saint by the Catholic Church. He was a friend of another Conventual friar, the Blessed Antonio Lucci. Born: 6 August 1681, Lucera, Italy... Died: 29 November 1742, Lucera, Italy Patronage: Lucera Beautied: 15 April 1951 by Pope Pius XII Canonised: 13 April 1986 by Pope John Paul II Feast: 29 November Born in Lucera, Francesco entered the Conventual Franciscans in 1695. After his ordination 10 years later, he taught philosophy to younger friars, served as guardian of his friary, and later became provincial minister. When his term of office ended, Francesco became master of novices and finally pastor in his hometown. In his various ministries, he was loving, devout, and penitential. He was a sought-after confessor and preacher. One witness at the canonical hearings regarding Francesco’s holiness testified, In his preaching he spoke in a familiar way, filled as he was with the love of God and neighbor; fired by the Spirit, he made use of the word and deed of holy Scripture, stirring his listeners and moving them to do penance. Francesco showed himself a loyal friend of the poor, never hesitating to seek from benefactors what was needed. At his death in Lucera, children ran through the streets crying out, The saint is dead! The saint is dead! Francesco was canonized in 1986. #stfrancescoantoniofasani #stfrancesco #saintoftheday #feastday #nov29 #saint #catholicsaints #martydom #catholicchurch #injesusname #franciscanmedia #stmichaelsmelkitechurch

17.01.2022 Some fun facts on our beautiful Archangel St Michael and how his wonderful prayer came about.. Pope Leo XIII penned this prayer in 1884, immediately after being allowed by God to hear a conversation between our Lord and the devil. Happy St Michael’s day to all. May the church and it’s parishioners always be under his protection. Have a blessed day
