24.01.2022 What are and why do we use Floor Books at St Nicks? Some families will be used to a more digital world approach to educational programs and documentation from early childhood services, so understanding the process behind Floor Book documentation can be hard to see... In Early Childhood, whether we study through TAFE, University or a private college, we are taught the value of the PROCESS rather than the PRODUCT. We focus on what and how something evolved and what the children... did and experimented and contributed, as opposed to what the end result looks like. At the end of the day, Floor Books are the children's books. It's their documentation of what they did and learnt today and what they would like to record. Attached are just some of the benefits that Floor Books have for children. As we start to progress into our second month, educator's will be creating individual portfolios for children where they will be storing and presenting their documentation on each child's learning and development... More information as to how you can view and contribute to this will come in the next week. Next time you read your room's Floor Book and speak to the educator's about your child's day, I encourage you to think about PROCESS of how the Floor Book was created each day.

18.01.2022 We often get comments about how great lunch smells and looks! On Friday, Karlene made a Terryaki Chicken Stir Fry. For the first 4 weeks, we have been using menu plans from St Nicholas Lochinvar to get us started. Karlene and Lauren hope to have our own 6-week menu plan up and running from next week and look forward to sharing this with you all shortly.

17.01.2022 Over the last month, we have been brainstorming and reflecting as a team about how we can get Karlene, our cook, more involved with our educational programs and with connecting with families. Together, with a lot of help from Millie to put all of our ideas together, we have made a Community Kitchen Book. In our Community Kitchen Book, you will find copies of our weekly menus as well as copies of our recipes. If you would like a copy, let us know and we'll photocopy one for yo...u! We also have a section for our family recipes and already have two recipes from families in our nursery room - thank you! If you cook something at home that you and your family love and think we will too, please take a family recipe template and fill it in. It would be fantastic to work with families to develop and evolve our menus to include some of your own traditional recipes

15.01.2022 Following on from a sensory play experience with oranges and lemons in the 'Tookun Room ', where Airlie had commented that they smelled like juice, we planned an experience where the children made their own orange juice. Airlie said, We squeezed oranges to make juice and then we drank it. Annabel said It was yummy!... The children in the 'Tookun Room' are taking increased responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing. We discussed how oranges contain Vitamin C that can protect us from colds and flu in the Winter months.

13.01.2022 When opening a new service, forming trusting relationships with children and partnerships with their families is something that we know is really important. To succeed in building these relationships, we also need to ensure that as a team, our educators feel welcome and secure in the service. This month, our staff are celebrating 'Feel Good February' and have each been given a secret person to do random acts of kindness for. Look at how amazing our team is here at Raymond Terrace as they have started to get to know more about each other!

13.01.2022 Thank you to all of the families who joined us for our Easter morning tea! We hope you all had a fantastic time and a wonderful Easter long weekend!

11.01.2022 I would like to let you all know that we will be farewelling Susan from our 'Wila Room' team this Friday. Susan has been successful in her application for a room leader position at St Nicholas Newcastle West. Whilst this is a great loss for us at Raymond Terrace, this is an exciting time for Susan and one that should definitely be celebrated.... Susan will start her new role 29 April and, as she will be on annual leave for the next two weeks, her last day with us will be this Friday, 12 April. . On behalf of all of the team and families at St Nicholas Raymond Terrace, I'd like to thank her for the last 3 months and wish her all the best with her new role. - Lauren.

11.01.2022 Happy belated birthday to Millie for Monday! Millie is the room leader of our 'Wila' nursery room. She's on the early shift this week, so if you didn't catch her today make sure you say happy birthday tomorrow morning!

10.01.2022 Thursday in the 'Wila Room', Emelia wanted to find a way to engage our babies and infants with the local Raymond Terrace community. Emelia knew that the children have started using and exploring the wooden blocks in the room and decided to print and contact images and photos of some of the local buildings and landmarks to the blocks. The educators in the room spent the day talking with the children and giving names to the different buildings in hope of strengthening their connection with the community and encourage a curiosity of their world.

10.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Researchers at the University of Arizona found nine different species of bacteria on people’s shoes, and determined that these bacteria live longer on our shoes than in other places? Also, did you know children under two put their hands in their mouths an average of 80 times an hour?... To promote a clean and safe environment for our youngest and most vulnerable children at St Nicholas Raymond Terrace, we would like to propose a ‘No Shoe’ policy when entering the 'Wila Room'. Whilst we understand that most families are in a rush of a morning and that stopping to take off your shoes can add an additional 5 minutes to your drop off, we want to keep the focus on the benefits that this will have for the children within our care. In the 'Wila Room', our learning takes place mostly on the ground as we learn to sit, crawl and then to stand and walk. We also do most of our exploring by mouthing objects and these are also accessible to us easier when they are on the ground. To show respect for our children, and for their health and wellbeing, given that their immune systems are much more vulnerable than ours, we would like to see all visitors to the 'Wila Room' to remove their shoes so as not to bring any dirt, germs or bacteria into the room that they may have trodden on outside of the centre. All educators will be trialling this for the next two weeks and will be removing their shoes before they enter the 'Wila Room'. All educators at St Nicholas Raymond Terrace will be encouraged to critically reflect and document their own thoughts and research during the two week trial and we would like to know your thoughts...

08.01.2022 The children in the 'Keewong' and 'Tookun' rooms were very lucky today to have the opportunity to meet the author of a brand new storybook titled, 'Mia Counts to Ten on the Farm'. Jacqueline Stevens, whose son Daniel attends the 'Keewong Room', engaged the children in a storytelling session. The children really enjoyed the story and were able to practice their 1:1 correspondence number skills from 1-10. The children participated by asking and answering questions and, through... this experience, now have a greater understanding of what an author is. Thank you so much, Jacqueline!

08.01.2022 This morning, the children in the 'Tookun' and 'Keewong' rooms started to learn about ANZAC Day. The educators used the book, 'My Grandad Marches On ANZAC Day' by Catriona Hoy and Benjamin Johnson to introduce ANZAC Day. Mandy explained to the children what ANZAC means and also talked about some of our parents, who work in the military - "wearing uniforms means they also protect our country." They talked about medals, marching on ANZAC Day and most importantly, showing respec...t. They then talked about the wreaths and significance of the poppies and rosemary. The children helped the educators create their own wreaths to display at our Community Connections station in the main foyer. Learning more about Australia's cultural traditions and history is a way of connecting children with their community and their world. We hope that by teaching the children a little about ANZAC Day, we can help them understand why it is such a significant day and what they might expect if and when they attend an ANZAC Day service in the future.
