15.01.2022 Announcing our first instructor for AWMAC 2018, Stoccata's very own founder, Provost Stephen Hand, who will be teaching 2 classes at the event. Stephen Hand sta...rted fencing in 1979 and in the mid 80s started exploring historical swordsmanship. In 1998 he and two colleagues founded the Stoccata School of Defence. Stephen taught at the first ever international HEMA event in the USA in 2000 and was the first Australian to win an international tournament, winning the WMAW rapier tournament against competitors from six different countries in 2001. Stephen has taught across North America and Europe and has published over twenty books and articles on HEMA. Stephen is teaching the following classes: Fundamental principles of combat with large shields --------------------------------------------------------------------- Despite showing vastly different sizes and shapes of shield, the duelling shield sections of various 15th century German manuals and the sword and rotella sections of 16th century Italian manuals show identical guards and parries. These guards and parries are also illustrated in earlier medieval artwork indicating a continuity in the style of shield use over many centuries. This class outlines the system of shield use described in the 15th and 16th century manuals and is applicable to all large flat or gently curved shields. Introduction to Saviolo ----------------------------- In 1595 the Italian fencing master Vincentio Saviolo wrote the first comprehensive fencing manual in English. He described a hybrid rapier system combining Italian and Spanish principles which so disgusted George Silver that it prompted him to write Paradoxes of Defence. This class outlines the basic principles of Saviolo's system of single rapier.

11.01.2022 A Special Announcement! On the morning of Saturday 17th November 2018, Stoccata Blue Mountains held its inaugural Prize fight, for two of its students, Matt Gordon, and Steve Evans. Provosts and Stoccata members trekked into the mountains to help Matt and Steve play their Scholar's Prize. After six bouts each against other players, both students were judged by the watching Provosts to have achieved the standard Stoccata School of Defence requires of its scholars candidates,... and were awarded their Prize, the rank of Scholar in Silver's Shortsword. The Ansererers gave the candidates a variety of styles of swordplay to deal with, including rapier according to Fabris, Bolognaise sidesword, Italian rapier and even a longsword bout. We all had a great time and the two candidates acquitted themselves very creditably. Such occasions can only happen with the assistance and cooperation of multiple members of Stoccata School of Defence, who take time off to travel often long distances to make it happen. Thank you all!
