24.01.2022 An incredibly limited release, only 600 bottles of 2017 Fighting Gully Road's ‘La Longa’ Sangiovese were produced. We have been growing a number of Sangiovese clones at the Fighting Gully Road site since 2007. Conditions leading up to the 2017 vintage made us feel we had the potential to create a truly unique wine made from only one clone. Sourced in the late 1990s from long-time friend Paolo di Marchi’s Isole e Olena vineyard in Chianti, his Cepparello gave me inspiration ...to create Australia’s first truly great Sangiovese wine. The grapes were hand-harvested, de-stemmed; and fermented using indigenous yeasts in an Italian-made French oak fermenter. The wine was aged in new and one-year-old barriques for 18 months prior to bottling, and aged for a further six months prior to release. Extremely limited production 600 bottles." Aromas of tar and roses, along with high acidity and tannins, are hallmarks of this wine. A famously finicky grape, nebbiolo is well worth the patience and persistence as its complexity is second to none. Missum" wine is from a small parcel of Nebbiolo fruit from the Darling family's Koombahla vineyard in Victoria's North East. The fruit was guided through ferment and elevage at Beechworth's Mayday Hills lunatic assylum with the assistance of Mark Walpole and Adrian Rodda. Gently destemmed and fermented for 30 days in a large open top fermenter, before transfer to old puncheons for a nine month elevage. Aromatics of green pepper and paprika, the wine has the varietal hallmarks of acid and tannin. 14.01.2022 Repost from the exceptional @neudorfvineyards over in New Zealand. Sheep are unbeatable mowers in the vineyard! 'Gentle in the vineyard - gentle in the winery' 1978 and the New Zealand fine wine industry was almost nonexistent. Judy and Tim Finn were fresh from the back to the land movement of the late sixties. They wanted to make beautiful wine and figured Tim’s masters in Animal Behaviour along with Judy’s unimpressive journalism career would be beneficial. Wrong. However..., they did have youth (temporary), self-belief (unwarranted), and friends. At one stage they had four mortgages and three jobs each. The old house at Neudorf had electricity in two rooms, an outside long drop, an inefficient wood stove, and no hot water. Judy and Tim look back with no regrets and more than thirty years later the wines they have crafted have been shared at tables across the globe and garnered some of the highest praise of all of New Zealand’s wines.
