22.01.2022 Living and working alone during lockdown, the myriad of birds visiting my courtyard were the only living creatures I saw on most days. Their daily routines and obliviousness to the chaos and upheaval occurring in the human world kept me feeling grounded. A focus on smaller works gave a regular sense of achievement to keep me feeling motivated, extra free time lent itself to experimenting with new subject matter and brighter palettes a much needed sense of fun. - Andria Beig...hton Bird Portrait No.5 Acrylic on canvas 35.5 x 28cm View this work along with the other pieces contributed to our Art in Iso group show now on our website - www.thestockroom.com.au/art-in-iso #linkinbio #andriabeighton #artiniso #groupshow #groupexhibition #exhibition #virtualexhibition #artinisolation #artduringcovid19 #onlineexhibition #artinthetimeofcorona #covid19 #supportthearts #painting #colour #colourblock #colourblocking #birdpainting #thestockroomgallery #thestockroom #supportingtheartskeepsustogether #cityofyarra

21.01.2022 Lockdown allowed me to experiment with new ways of creating. Air-dry clay was something Id wanted to work with for a long time. But these forms still look like drawings to me - lines and shapes. Transmission towers are a kind of necessary visual pollution. They have always been present in my suburban experience. Designed purely for function, they have a brutal type of beauty. Equally spaced in isolation, yet linked to each other in a network of essential energy - very much ...like humanitys current situation. - Leadbeater Silver transmission & Shadows (of the Silver Transmission piece) Airdry clay and silver aerosol paint Available for purchase now as part of our Art in Iso exhibition - www.thestockroom.com.au/art-in-iso

18.01.2022 Bluebells represents a personal and soft melancholy. As the winter blues make way for the colours of spring, this portrait is layered with the uncertainties of our days ahead in lockdown. Bluebells describes the infinite beauty of nature which persists through our times of isolation and solitude. - Caitlin Rigby Bluebells... Acrylic on canvas 30 x 30 cm SOLD This work was one of the first to sell from the Art in Iso exhibition and its easy to see why! 17.01.2022 Ewan is 11 spray painted stencils on plywood, I have been using this time to push the medium of stencil art and get as much detail as possible in my portraits. Self teaching myself new graphic design skills has been a challenge but I have a lot of time to experiment for hours on end. I also tried using thicker paper for this stencil so I could retain the stencils, which I normally never do as I use normal paper. Using thicker paper always worried me that I would lose the det...ail. Isolation gave me more time to think about where I want to head with my stenciling, but at times, struggled with motivation to do anything because it was dark and I felt miserable. I find it hard not working without deadlines so I used the time in isolation to impose my own deadlines in the hope of having a whole series of work for 2021. I do miss being able to go outside and paint or just exploring the streets. - ARGH Ewan Spray paint and stencils on plywood 30cm x 35cm $300 - Swipe Left for some #WIP pics of this incredibly detailed piece Original available for purchase now as part of our Art in Iso group exhibition - www.thestockroom.com.au/art-in-iso #linkinbio

15.01.2022 This assemblage piece, Persephone, was created for an exhibition that was cancelled due to the pandemic. It was created with no intended symbolism or story line, though I find one always emerges as the creative process evolves, sometimes it is revealed even after it is created, after a bit of time has passed, upon reflection. Like the goddess herself, Persephone spent many months in the cold underworld (my dark and lonely studio shelf) waiting to be reborn into the world of... the living (post pandemic). She wears authentic 1800s American dress remnants, saved from a garment worn by souls long gone from this earth, her friends in the underworld. The butterfly helps her travel between worlds and the antique Czech button is a symbol of the pomegranate seeds that sealed her fate. This piece is a reminder that as the earth turns, nothing is stagnant. The cycles of life are always fluctuating and even if it seems dark and never-ending right now, change is imminent and there is always going to be sunshine when we re-emerge from the darkness. - Lucia Mocnay Persephone Wood, plastic, butterfly, antique lace and antique glass button in glass cloche (14cm x 27cm) $890 - Available now to view and purchase as part of our Art in Iso exhibition, view online here - www.thestockroom.com.au/art-in-iso
14.01.2022 As the world changed, and continues to change, with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are forced to engage with a new world that is both familiar and unfamiliar. Many of our surroundings, daily routines and interactions with others have become somewhat strange. These times have encouraged and enabled a period of reflection and introspection. Collectively, we have had more time to consider our own place in the world as our experience has narrowed. I have created a self...-portrait that echoes these ideas, blending aesthetic accuracy with a disjointed, dissolving form: the familiar and the unfamiliar. In a nod to my artistic practice I have recorded this hybridised representation on a discarded piece of courier packaging. This is a reminder of a time when the world was more predictable, operating, for the most part, as expected. - Damien Veal Self portrait Acrylic on cardboard 60cm x 78cm $550 - Purchase this work and view the other pieces contributed to our Art in Iso group show now on our website - www.thestockroom.com.au/art-in-iso

13.01.2022 The detail of this ink illustration by Kane 'Trait' Horspool is just stunning... but it was the words he wrote to accompany the piece that really moved me. They reflect what this year has felt like for many people and remind us that Covid is only a small part of what people in this country are currently navigating. Here’s a snippet... A week before lockdown began my wife brought our second child into this world. Our beautiful little girl was born into a small isolated world.... Our eldest daughter had just begun kindergarten and was now locked away in our home, away from her new friends and the other children in the street. Children are not meant to be raised this way. It takes a village to raise a child. We were suddenly without the support of family, friends and neighbours. We were balancing home schooling with nurturing a new born. Facilitating creative play with limited resources and trying to avoid the television. But it could have been worse, our backyard was a saviour. Salute to all the single mothers, parents in apartment blocks and especially to all those caring for children with special needs. After two weeks of paternity leave, I went back to work. As a field officer in the NSW National Parks we didn’t shut down but continued our work, focusing on rehabilitating and rebuilding the areas devastated by the fires of the past summer. The work was hard and dirty but it was much harder for my wife at home with our two girls, attempting online kindergarten classes whilst sleep deprived, breast feeding, nurturing sleepy eyes and little minds. And she did it all with so much strength, commitment and undivided love that was truly inspirational... 12.01.2022 I drew this piece in the three weeks between lockdowns. Life felt like a strange vortex, constricted and questionable. What do you do with your psychology when there’s no sense of vision. 12.01.2022 Kaitlin Beckett always achieves amazing detail in any piece she creates, sculpture or painting. But the intricacies in her contribution to our Art in Iso exhibition are next level I started this sculpture intending to include it in my solo show in October 2019. I had completed the fish body a few months before the show date but realised I was probably not going to finish the rest in time and I had other projects I wanted to prioritise, so I put it aside and forgot abou...t it. During lockdown I picked it up again and decided to finish it - with no deadlines or plans for the finished piece, I knew I could take my time and I had the luxury of changing my mind as I went. I could test different techniques and pull it all apart again if I chose to. So many artists seemed to be tackling amazing projects during lockdown. On social media everyones productivity and creativity seemed to be blooming and I almost felt pressure to create more and post more to keep up. I decided to do the opposite - pull back, take a breather, work on projects I would not normally work on, and do it all slowly and carefully. The piece went through several iterations before I settled on this design. The central mechanical section was built up very gradually over weeks, adjusting the positions of all the layers before setting them in place. The head of the large fish was sanded back and sculpted at least 3 times. The finished piece is the most detailed sculpture I have done to date. I believe the lockdown period gave me the freedom to experiment without time pressure, learn as I created, make mistakes, and it is the reason I completed it at all. I have called it Keep Calm and Carry On, which felt like a good mantra during the chaos. - Kaitlin Beckett Keep Calm and Carry On Mixed media assemblage 12cm tall x 24cm wide x 2.5cm deep $720 - Take a virtual tour of the show, as well as view and purchase available works from it online here - www.thestockroom.com.au/art-in-iso
11.01.2022 My practice consistently involves having about three or four projects on the go, at any one time. This offers the opportunity to randomly pounce on any which one, when inspiration strikes. My former source of inspiration was drawn from encounters with external objects and life outside the comfort of my own home. I would go for long distance cycles around the urban environment and find places that sparked an interest. I would sit down and start sketching, plotting concepts ...for paintings within my visual diary. In these environments things that sparked vision and creativity would be textures of surfaces, human behaviour, objects of pollution and the amalgamation of actions and events which create these chaotic environments. With these settings in mind, I try to form an apprehensively disorganised form of reality, materialising and encompassing an individual who is experiencing forms of dread or anxiety. With the onset of COVID, isolation, and the cancellations of shows, I found myself lacking the external stimulation which I once drew so much from. This affected my ability to source inspiration and produce work at the rate I was pre-pandemic. With this new way of living, and not having access to the stimulation of these external settings, I first found myself less productive and struggling to find motivation. However, the more I experienced the every-day life of isolation, I found myself tapping into the emotional relationship I had with painting and noticed reoccurring symbols within my work and within my inner vision. To say the least, recent times have been exceptionally introspective and as a result, my practice has transformed from relying heavily on the external world for pools of inspiration to searching internally and reflecting on what that world has to offer too. - Joel Dirt STAGE FRIGHT Oil paint on pine canvas 41cm x 51cm $850 - View this work along with the other pieces contributed to our Art in Iso group show now on our website - www.thestockroom.com.au/art-in-iso

09.01.2022 Perhaps one of the most compelling works currently on display as part of our Art in Iso group exhibition is this portrait of Meyne Wyatt by Lee Stain. Titled I DONT WANNA SIT DOWN! this painting is referenced from Meynes emotional monologue extracted from his play City of Gold that featured on the TV series Q+A earlier this year. Watch the monologue and read more about this piece online here - www.thestockroom.com.au/art-in-iso ... Wed also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Meyne on his Packing Room Prize win yesterday and being named one of this years Archibald Prize finalists with his incredible self portrait. 06.01.2022 The idea of social change has always felt so out of grasp for me; Ive always felt like real change was, and is, such a hard thing to inspire, and comes down to the most serendipitous of pivotal moments and events. I started creating this work at the beginning of 2020, following the bush fires and the battle for climate change awareness, I was thinking, almost obsessively, about these pivotal moments, the idea of a frozen moment in time and of capturing a single freeze fra...me of such an event. Little did I know, what the following months would bring, and the ironic connection this piece would have given the point in time that it would be painted and finished. I havent really had any inspiration throughout the months weve experienced so far of this pandemic, I find it hard to draw inspiration because so much of my work was, and is, inspired by things that I would personally do or be exposed to in everyday life. 2020 has forced me to take a back seat to these experiences in a way, letting something else take the reigns and drive the year. Were all just trying to ride it out, heres hoping that some good will come from our fall from grace - 23rd Key Fall From Grace by 23rd Key 6 layer stencil on board 120cm x 142cm This work is also available as a 40x40cm print. 06.01.2022 These paintings were a way to connect with friends and create a project for myself and them during the first Melbourne lockdown. I asked for people to take selfies that captured their Iso experience, that I could then make paintings of.
