18.01.2022 I thought this might be of interest to people in the group. Next week Uni of Newcastle Cultural Collections are running a #UONMissedInHistory event. It's an all day, online event to update and add information to Wikipedia about people and places that aren't currently included. It's a great opportunity to learn how to use Wikipedia and also add a bit more about our region and it's people. I plan on adding info to the Stockton page, as well as working on some biographies. It's a great project, one you can do from the comfort of your home. Tutorials and instructions will be included in the day. More info at the link below. https://libguides.newcastle.edu.au/Missed_In_History
16.01.2022 Our condolences to Jean's family. A Life member of the Stockton Historical Society and President in 1996, Jean was an integral part of the team that got the SHS off the ground and due to her efforts remains an active group in 2020. RIP Jean. See the link below our Vol 1 No 1 Journal when Jean presided as President.
16.01.2022 Next year will see the 40th Anniversary of Stockton Over the Years Vol 1. To celebrate we have embarked on the task of producing Stockton Over the Years Vol 4 for publication in 2021. So much has happened around Stockton since 1981, we want your thoughts of what topics should be covered. Comment below with your thoughts.

02.01.2022 Tooth and Company were renowned for engaging some of the most talented architects of the time for designing their hotels, including the many hotel renovations t...hey undertook. One of the architectural firms that completed many projects for Tooth was the Newcastle-based Pitt & Merewether, which was started by Nigel Bronte Pitt (1886-1972) and Edward Robert Hickson Merewether (1889-1964) in 1913. Nigel was born in Sydney and at the age of 20 he began an indenture with the prominent architectural firm Robertson & Marks. It was while working here that he met fellow student Edward Merewether. Merewether was from Newcastle but was educated in Sydney. He was also indentured to Robertson & Marks while studying architecture at Sydney Architectural College Architectural School. Both Pitt & Merewether excelled at their studies. In 1913 Pitt & Merewether decided to start their own architectural firm in Newcastle, however these plans were interrupted by the start of World War I and Merewether’s war service. Pitt continued the business on a small scale, with Merewether returning in 1918. It was in 1924, following the death of architect Wal Porter, that Pitt & Merewether’s practice flourished. Porter had been Tooth & Company’s primary architect in the area, and following his death, Pitt & Merewether were awarded much of Tooth’s hotel design and renovation work. Pitt & Merewether took on an extensive number of hotel projects for Tooth & Co, particularly between the 1920s and 1940s. During this period they produced 29 new hotel designs and 31 hotel renovations. They also undertook a large amount of work for BHP. Their expertise also saw them appointed as the Newcastle agents for a number of Sydney architectural firms including Robertson & Marks. Poor health saw Edward Merewether retire to Sydney in 1943. It was the intention for Edward’s son E.J. (John) Merewether to join the firm, however he chose to form his own Sydney-based architectural firm Merewether & Bagot. Pitt continued the firm with his son Rowan, who later formed Pitt & Pitt in 1952. Pitt was very well-respected and was a foundation member of the Newcastle and District Architects Association, teacher of architecture at Newcastle Technical College and member of the Town Planning Committee of the Newcastle Betterment Board. Some of the Newcastle hotels that Pitt & Merewether worked on for Tooth included the Crown & Anchor, Orient and Beach Hotels in Newcastle; Gladstone and Boatrowers Hotels in Stockton; Exchange Hotel in Lambton; Parkview, Criterion and Station Hotels in Islington; and the Cambridge and Hamilton Hotels in Hamilton.
