25.01.2022 Warm wet conditions following summer rain events like the one we’ve just had create ideal conditions for parasites. Left unchecked their numbers can rapidly rise. Barbers Pole in particular cause huge damage. They can go unnoticed for a period as they don’t cause scouring. When picked up early in an egg count it is common for several samples to show low egg counts but a couple quite high indicating a percentage of the mob or herd is under pressure and it won’t be long before the rest are! At this early stage the mob will probably look fantastic ... it’s the perfect time to then drench and save lost production. A premium test ie 10 individual samples is best at this time of year. Enjoy the extra feed the rain brings but be sure to test that worms aren’t eating your profits.

25.01.2022 Have just spent a few hours at the South West Slopes Merino Breeders Field day in Harden NSW. What fantastic displays from the studs on display. Along with a great role up, interested in sourcing great genetics for an industry that is thriving (needless to say rain is required in most areas to assist and make things a bit easier!) Caught up with many clients as well as other good service providers such as Doug Walker of Fabstock https://www.fabstock.com.au/ (feed licks) and Trent Fordham of Riverina Wool Testers (pictured) http://www.wooltesters.com.au/

23.01.2022 We are open for business as usual. Worm pressures are picking up in those areas that received rain a few weeks ago. A great time to test ewes that are due to lamb soon. Stay safe and all the best from the team at StockWatch

22.01.2022 We would like to thank the team at Gordon Litchfield Wool for their support. StockWatch Worm test kits will be available as of next week from Gordon Litchfield Wool, Yass and Cooma Stores.

22.01.2022 Are these yours? We are looking for the owner of a set of samples we received in this morning’s mail - two StockWatch boxes taped together with black tape. Unfortunately the sender has forgotten to include a request form. Each box has three mobs to be tested ie 6 mobs in total. Paddock names on the samples are Bottom Cult, Car park & House, Ploughs Dam, Pump Pdk, One Tree and Woolshed Pdk. If these sound like yours please call Tom on 0488 089 676 and we can get your results to you as soon as possible.

16.01.2022 A couple of years ago we took on a work experience student from our local high school, Lachlan Reichstein. We offered him part time work soon after. Lachlan is currently studying science at ANU Canberra and works as a lab assistant with us during his uni breaks. The lab will be open right over the Christmas New Year period so you may encounter Lachlan during your dealings with the lab.

14.01.2022 The Worms aren't taking a break over the summer, so neither are we......they are just getting warmed up! Whether it's Barbers Pole or a scouring species we’ll be on deck to help you keep them in check. StockWatch will be testing right over the Christmas-New Year period. If you can get sample to us we'll test it. Please allow for postal delays with public holidays ie don't post the day before Christmas!! Thanks from the StockWatch Team.

13.01.2022 Recent rainfall events has continued what has been a pretty good season for internal parasites. Despite the dry winter and in many areas a late, short spring, parasites got a shot in the arm with rain in early December 2017 then again in January 2018 and more recently in Late February 2018. (and as I write this the north and east coast is getting another dumping of rain). Many clients, particularly sheep producers, are getting a bit of a shock to find quite high egg counts, ...ie 3000 epg or greater. It seem all or nothing in the Lab at present. Either counts are very high or quite low with not much in between. What is significant is that in most cases the stock looked well. It just goes to show that the only way to know for sure if your stock are wormy is to test them. We have of course tested for those that have left it a bit late and found egg counts significantly higher, proving the cause of losses in the paddock. So be prepared and test before things get out of hand. See more

12.01.2022 We all know the issues that arise when an Autumn break doesn't happen, feeding intensifies, it becomes so time consuming that it is nearly all you get a chance to do. Sourcing feed supplies with the cold weather approaching and the knowledge that growth will be limited the colder it gets. Not to mention the escalating price of feed and it's availability. So in this environment it's critical that everything is right otherwise we can be throwing good money and valuable time aw...ay. It is a common misconception that as it has been dry, worms will have died off too, not so. A moderate worm infection will rob an animal of it's ability to use or absorb the feed on offer. They may eat the same but growth and weight gain will not be adequate. Stock can look like they are fine and everything is rolling along OK but you would be amazed how often we pick up a major parasite infection in stock that are reported to look OK. I don't need to harp on about this too much because if you've read this far you probably understand all too well the costs! So if in doubt get in touch because potentially we can save you a lot of stress and thousands of dollars with a test or two. See more

12.01.2022 As the year draws to a close we would like to wish all a happy Christmas and New Year. The Lab remains open over the festive season. Please consider potential mail delays due to public holidays however if you can get it to us we'll test it. Probably not on Christmas day but I am sure you'll understand! Wishing you a dust storm free Christmas and a safe and happy New Year with plenty of rain! Worm test results currently range from zero to the thousands of eggs per gram with a variety of species active. All the best Tom and Fiona and the team at StockWatch.

12.01.2022 A large crowd turned up today and bid frantically on a great selection of merino rams at Bundilla Poll Merino’s. A credit to the Baldwin Family.

11.01.2022 Attended Roseville Corriedale ram sale at Kingsvale (near Young) NSW recently. Great selection of rams to spirited bidding from a wide geographical area. Tony and John Manchester, long term clients of StockWatch through routine worm testing and individual testing to apply genetic selection pressure, measure and test all performance drivers in both there Corriedale and Poll Dorset studs. The result is always great rams that perform for their clients. Well done to the Manchester family.

07.01.2022 It has been a while since our last post, despite the conditions parasites are still doing ok! An important point to consider; Stock that are drenched into drought lots are not necessarily worm free.... they can be but we test many that still manage to pick up a fair burden as they fossick close to the ground. Monitor these every so often to ensure your feed reserves are going your animals and not worms! A $35 test can save you thousands!!

06.01.2022 It pays to monitor and be on top of issues before they get on top of you! As we enter the last month of spring we thought it a good idea to advise of the observations in the lab and make a couple of suggestions as we enter the summer months. It is easy to think that worms may have found it too hard to survive the dry conditions and in some cases this along with good managment has been the case however with stock grazing very close to the gorund in most areas their propensit...y to pick up larval is intensified, as most larvae don't ever get up very high in pastures anyway and there is no diluition effect when grazing so close to the ground, each mouthfull can conatin a lot of larvae. With the cost of hay and grain at present it is very important that you are feeding your stock and not a belly fully of worms. Species change from the colder to the warmer months so continued montoring is essential to avoid damage from species such as Barbers Pole, which is just ramping up its spring/summer onslaught in areas that have been lucky enough to have received a shower or two. We will be open right over the summer to assit with any testing requirements. See more

01.01.2022 Harvest rain in Late Nov and Early Dec has had a significant impact on worm burdens across a wide area and it's not just the normal culprits, like Barbers Pole. Thin neck intestinal worm is enjoying the conditions and unlike Barbers Pole they can be the cause of the scouring currently in some mobs of sheep. Barbers pole is very active in some areas and it pays to be one step ahead of these, as if you get one step behind losses can be huge! With stock and wool prices at good levels we would encourage growers to worm test and not get caught out, so you can take full advantage of the favorable markets. (a missed worm burden costs in multiple ways; losses, weight loss, missed markets, extra feed and the list goes on). Any questions please give us a call on 0488 089 676
