25.01.2022 Chilli and Pepper are Little Red Flying Foxes (Pteropus scapulatus). These guys are very family orientated, if you ever get the chance to spot them in a colony they will often be seen clumping together tightly in groups of up to 20, whereas other fruit bats will hang roughly at a wingspan apart. Here they can be seen forming the typical Little Red Clump.

21.01.2022 It’s a tough life being a little bat. Little Chili is having some snuggles with his teddy bear. Did you know that Flying Foxes are classified as a keystone species? To be a Keystone Species an animal must play a unique and crucial role in the way an ecosystem functions. Without keystone species, the ecosystem would be dramatically different or cease to exist altogether. In this case our beloved Flying Foxes work extremely hard while flying out at night, they pollinate and... disperse the seeds of native Australian hardwood trees. FF can disperse up to 60,000 seeds per night over a distance of 50km, ensuring the genetic health and diversity within our forests. Australian hardwood native trees are also most receptive to pollination at night, so while the birds and bees are sleeping, our little guys are out and about foraging for blossoms and pollinating them as they consume their sweet nectar along the way. Without Flying Foxes like Chili here - who will go on to contribute an incredible ecological service, our forests and other animals like Koalas who are completely dependent upon them would simply cease to exist. Thank you to The Care Initiative Project for their continued support in our journey of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing native animals.

16.01.2022 CACTUS Little Cactus, found by a member of the public, given his situation, we assumed the worst. On arrival he was looking a bit ractus cactus, but on closer inspection he was in fact alive. Taking slow, shallow breaths, his eyes were sealed shut after being bitten by green ants, covered in bat flies and burrowing mites, he had minor membrane damage from being grounded and he was severely dehydrated - what a long list of things to deal with for a little bat! ... He was quickly scooped up and given immediate first aid on scene, and then taken into care for some long term lovin! He’s only been in care 5 days, but look at the improvements!!

08.01.2022 Baby season 2020 has well and truly kicked off. This little premie boy was dropped by his mum in a local colony. He was lying in the cold, wet grass barely alive. Given warmth, fluids and his first feed of colostrum, unfortunately baby number 1 didn’t make it through his first night. Our flying foxes are continually faced with the ever growing threats and the stress of urban development and continued deforestation, domestic animal attacks, persistent fogging and dispersals b...y local councils, barb wire entanglements, electrocution on powerlines, being hit by cars and intentionally being injured/killed by uneducated members of the public. Many of these stressors are causing mums to be to have late spontaneous abortions, early premature births and abandoning/dropping of pups. Now is especially the time of year to look out for Flying Foxes. Any bat alone in the day is in trouble. Please keep a look out for any pups who may have been dropped and report to your local wildlife organisation. We preach no touch, no risk - although the chance is contracting ABLV is extremely low, it is imperative for the safety of both you and the injured/orphaned bat that no contact is made via an unvaccinated person.

08.01.2022 Little Chili learning all about the importance of native foods.

07.01.2022 Cheers to Red Skippy James for repping the shirts! Trip at the brain \m/ shirts available from www.beserk.com.au

07.01.2022 Mrs Thornbill will be returning home tomorrow. She enjoyed her stay in her private suite while receiving daily room service. Her eye has its sparkle back

06.01.2022 Tiny 70 gram girl adjusting well after coming into care Check the comments for a short video of her enjoying the comfort of her dummy and new mummy. Any bat alone in the day is in need of assessment by a permitted and vaccinated carer. They could be orphaned, injured, sick or abandoned and in need of life saving rescue. Remember - no touch, no risk! People who are not vaccinated for ABLV should never handle a bat. This keeps both you AND the bat safe and sound! #pteropusalecto #blackflyingfox #skypuppy #pup #mammal #vaccinatedcarer #rescue #rehab #release #cute #baby #childofthenight #loveyou

A bit of a stinky boy to start with, this tiny 250gram joey has had his first bath, and is settling into care being offered warmth, fluids and all the love he could ever need around the clock!
