19.01.2022 The world is grieving right now. For George Floyd and all those who came before him, and for our Indigenous brothers and sisters who have suffered (and continued to suffer) closer to home. In the words of Martin Luther King, "Rioting is the language of the unheard." For generations, minorities have been oppressed and brutalised. They have suffered while the rest of us have continued our lives, with the privilege to be completely unaware of their suffering. There was only o...ne outcome that could ever have eventuated from such a situation. There is a yogic concept of Ahimsa, meaning non-violence. Non-violence to yourself, and to others that inhabit this earth with us.This doesnt only mean physical violence, but also thoughts or words designed to hurt or cause suffering. Failure to make choices that minimise harm can also be considered a type of violence. It is up to every single one of us to do everything we can to actively dismantle structural racism and live Ahimsa in our daily lives. I have plenty to learn, and plenty to change in my life to be a true ally. To be not only "not racist", but instead, "anti-racist". Im listening to Black voices, and Im looking for ways to use our platform and privilege to amplify those voices. I would encourage every one of our followers and amazing community to do the same. Tabletop, Plank, Chaturanga, Downward Dog... our wrists bear a lot of load at full extension, and for that reason might get sore during or after we practice. We've also added a new 6:30am Slow Flow class with JB on Thursdays, so all you early birds can set your day up right with an hour of mindfulness, movement, and meditation You can book in for both of these new classes now! Yin/Yang classes begin with movement before transitioning to a Yin-style practice of longer-held, supported postures (typically on the floor). 15.01.2022 What does self-practice look like for you? Do you have a self-practice? Mine is much less since I started teaching - the curse of the yoga teacher, where all our energy is channeled into planning classes and teaching if we aren't careful. But still, I manage to sometimes roll out the mat and just play and explore. Sometimes what I discover makes it into a class, other times it's something that is individual to myself and my own body.... Sometimes I start the practice with a purpose in mind (I had intended to play with Wheel Pose here), other times I just move and explore, and see where that takes me. If you've ever been unsure about practicing on your own, just roll out your mat and start moving... and see where it takes you. 09.01.2022 Breathing high into your chest, especially using the "accessory muscles" in the front of your neck, is how your body is wired to breathe when being in the jungle, to get the maximum amount of oxygen into your lungs with each breath. Your brain you breathing like a is chasing you, and engages the fight/flight response - upping adrenaline and cortisol. This is experienced as stress and/or anxiety. A normal, functional breath involves d...iaphragmatic breathing, through the nose and into the belly and lower back, with only small involvement of the chest. This triggers our body relaxation responses but a good percentage of us are not naturally breathing this way. Try this: Find a space to sit or lie quietly and comfortably Close your eyes, or lower and soften your gaze Soften your belly, soften your jaw and your tongue Consciously breathe through your nose into both your belly and your lower back, rather than high up into your chest and collarbones Stay as long as you like, breathing gentle breaths into your belly and lower back Notice how this conscious, 360 breathing has the capacity to calm your mind, and lower feelings of stress or anxiety Whenever you're feeling that fight/flight response kick in - check in with your breath, and see if you can use diaphragmatic breathing as a tool to bring you back in balance #stress #anxiety #bellybreath #diaphragmaticbreathing #calm #praanayama #perthyoga #perthhills #mundaring #mundaringyoga See more

08.01.2022 "Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind" This is Sutra 1:2 from The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali - the seminal text written around 2,000 years ago. When we practice, we do so not only for our physical health and mobility, but the benefits to our mental health, as well. ... Postures (asana), Pranayama (breath), Pratyahara (sensory withdrawal) and Dharana (concentration) all come together in the time we share, helping us to balance our busy, fluctuating minds and cultivate stillness and peace Over time, and with regular practice, these benefits spill over into our daily life, too. We find our mind becoming quieter, with less mood-swings and instability. Have you felt these benefits in your daily life?

08.01.2022 One year ago today we picked up the keys for the Mundaring Masonic Lodge. After months of conversations, negotiations, soul-searching, budget revisions, and questioning our sanity, Stones Throw Yoga was born. We had a building.... Now we had to make it a home. It took us five months of long days, longer nights and more than a few tears, beers and bruised body parts. We rewired the whole building, and patched and painted every wall. JB nearly fell through the shala ceiling on a number of occasions, and Mel amassed a startling number of plants at home - ostensibly for the studio, but a fair few of them are still there! We replaced an aging septic system and restored an aging toilet block (the dungeon). JB fought with our magnificent shala fan for days before it finally worked. We sweated for months over our opening class schedule. We considered everything we could think of, many times over, striving for perfection, all the while knowing it was unattainable. We did all of this while working our day jobs, teaching yoga at other studios to make sure we kept our skills up, and covertly learning to dance for our wedding in November. Yes, were completely insane. We had so, so much help. We couldnt have done this without our friends, our family, and a talented and patient team of local tradies. Thank you all, so very much And we couldnt have done this without YOU. Our beautiful yoga family. The people that invested in our opening special offer, when we had nothing to offer but a promise of things to come. The people that stuck with us through (we hope) the worst of COVID-19. The people that believed in us. One year in, theres still long days, and longer nights. Theres still tears. And, occasionally, we still question our sanity But we are so, so happy we took the chance on something we believed in. Thank you for coming on this journey with us. Much love, Mel & JB

Why do we place more importance on something like our appearance, as if it is more relevant than the amazing things we can *do* and *achieve*?...
