25.01.2022 Koalas: So Cute & Cuddly Please help them to survive on French Island! With the Australia wide bushfires (and the destruction the fires caused especially to wil...dlife) over the last 6 months much publicity has been given to our unique marsupial wildlife, and the most emotive publicity has been given to the Koala. Much money has been donated by individuals, and state & federal governments have pledged funds, for the rescue and preservation of our iconic fauna. French Island Koalas are unique. They live in a disease-free (Chlamydia free), predator-free, and relatively low traffic environment. Without human intervention on the island they double their population every 3 years. When they continue to eat and eventually kill the remaining Manna and Swamp Gums (theyve already wiped out the Blue Gum forest on the island) theyll die a slow death through starvation. Government intervention has helped in the past to control the rate of increase in the Koala population on the island through hormonal implant desexing and relocation of individuals, but this has been on an ad hoc basis. The State Environment Minister Lily DAmbrosio needs to commit funds for an annual hormonal implant desexing program to save French Island Koalas and the trees they feed on to ensure their survival into the future. The aim is for 85% of Koala females to be hormonally desexed... previous campaigns have not got above 50%... an ongoing fully funded program is needed for at least the next 5 years. Friends of French Island NP (FOFI) have this week written to the Minister requesting commitment of funds for an ongoing control program. You can help support the survival of Koalas on French Island by also contacting the Minister: [email protected] to express your concern.
