18.01.2022 On a cool evening 98 years ago, Wednesday 12 July 1922, a very special event was occurring on stage at Maryborough City Hall. On that night, Allan Wilkie’s tra...velling Shakespeare company was performing A Midsummer Night’s Dream. With a tireless work ethic, Allan Wilkie made a tremendous contribution to theatre in Australia and New Zealand. Throughout the 1920s his travelling theatre company performed thousands of times in country towns and capital cities. Over the years they would perform 27 of Shakespeare’s plays. They were greatly anticipated wherever they went and much appreciated by audiences. There was a great deal of excitement associated with this visit to Maryborough. On the Tuesday night they performed The Taming of the Shrew, but most of the acclaim was for the Wednesday night performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In the centuries that have passed since it was written and first performed in the 1590s, it has been heralded as one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies. Amongst the travelling thespians there was one actress who had a particular interest in the Maryborough visit: P.L. Travers. Twenty-two years earlier, she had been born a few blocks away in the Kent Street residence above the bank where her adored father was the manager - which is now The Story Bank Maryborough. A dozen years after this return to her hometown, she would publish the first of her Mary Poppins books. Travers’ role that night on our stage was that of Titania; the queen of the fairies. The reviews in the Maryborough Chronicle the following day were glowing, stating that Travers was charmingly graceful as Titania and her lines flowed musically from her lips. The paper referred to her costume as a flimsy transparent dress composed of three shades of ninon, with delicate gauze wings. In the Tuesday night performance of The Taming of the Shrew, Travers had a smaller role: that of a bridesmaid, and her costume was described as a beautiful gown of rose pink with puffed sleeves and rose pink tabard trimmed with silver. She wore a sequin band round her hair. Other roles that Travers was playing at this time included one of the witches in Macbeth and Nerissa in The Merchant of Venice. Five years later, having moved to London to pursue her writing career, and living near the Inns of Court, she would write back to Australia: Occasionally I see the flying black cloak of a barrister going past my window, and then I remember myself as Nerissa in Merchant of Venice The success of the visit to Maryborough with large, fashionable and appreciative audiences was described by one local critic as gratifying evidence of the existence in this city of a taste for high class dramatic art that needs only such an opportunity as this to become manifest. The experience of the travelling so widely, performing so frequently and learning the lines written by the famous Bard would certainly have helped shape the mind and outlook of the young Travers. Writers and storytellers help to define, shape and direct our culture. Both Travers and Shakespeare have in their own ways contributed greatly to how we see the world. See more
