22.01.2022 Ready to chill! Todays activity was hands off, unabashed screen time, listening to (watching) stories. There are so many free story options for kids at the moment but we chose Storytime from Space, where astronauts read stories to kids from the International Space Station @iss. Its easily found on YouTube and so cool! This then led to a loooong conversation about how people do things in space, like doing a poo of course. 21.01.2022 This is definitely an activity that stretches across age groups from 5 - 12! All you need are a bunch of superpowers, a few settings + problems, and some verbs. Easy!! Just like the lucky dip story, the surprise element of this is really motivating for kids, and the more fun and interesting the powers and settings, the more imaginations will be inspired. My daughter decided to do her story as a comic - Ant Girl and the oozing Aliens A key tip here is that the supe...rpowers should have limits. If there are no limits to superpowers then the hero can not be challenged and thats the end of the story right there! This is a great activity to use creative thinking and creative problem-solving skills! 20.01.2022 This is a great activity if you have kids of different ages. Its also one that is useful to remind the kids ( and us ) to appreciate the small things. We made a gratitude tree, while Rufus and Jack (@lambemily) created a beautiful wishing tree! The first step was going out for a walk and collecting some leaves and other items to decorate the tree. At home, we drew the outline of the tree, and then did bark rubbing with crayons to help our trunk feel more real. The kid...s then worked together to decorate the tree with birds, and the items collected outside. For the gratitude tree, Willow and Luca wrote gratitude statements and stuck them around the tree For the wishing tree, Rufus and Jack each took an envelope, cut up magic coloured paper and wanted to write private wishes that they then sealed and put under the tree as seeds of hope for whats ahead Whichever type of tree you decide to make, the kids can keep coming back to it and adding wishes or gratitude statements. 20.01.2022 If you dont know Tina Matthews you should. Tina is absolutely wonderful with the kids at our holiday camps, and we feel lucky to have her! Not only is she an award winning writer and illustrator of kids books, but shes also an esteemed puppeteer! And how many people can say that!? Tina worked as a puppet maker and writer in childrens theatre and television for 25 years, including ABC TVs Bananas in Pyjamas and The Ferrals. But, what Im completely star struck by, is that she worked with Jim Henson on the beloved 80s cult fave Labyrinth, with David Bowie (*swoon*). . 10.01.2022 Just say the words bake in my house and the kids are instantly engaged. So we were excited when todays activity was Character cooking - inventing, making and baking our own exciting characters to use as inspiration for some stories! We happened to have some Fimo in the house (remember how much you loved using this when you were a kid?). But if you dont have any Fimo you can make your own bakable clay, or even make edible characters out of puff pastry or cookie dough. ... This activity should consume at least a couple of hours (extra if youre making the bakable clay - recipe included in the blog post). Link in bio. . Characters are a key story element and the more detail and depth we give them, the more exciting the story will be. Its great to get kids into the habit of creating characters, and assigning them characteristics, early. Creating characters is also an amazing exercise in teaching empathy. 08.01.2022 I often hear kids say that they cant think of any ideas, and they want to just give up. I choose not to believe them. Because kids always have ideas. Its just a matter of having the confidence to let them out. Its a matter of them realising that the first idea probably wont be the best idea. It will probably be a really bad idea. And so will the second, and maybe even the third. But thats OK. In fact thats normal. Because once they find the courage to let that first ide...a out into the world, once they overcome their fear of having bad ideas, something wonderful will happen. One idea will lead to another, and another, and another, and another. Their confidence will grow and so will the ideas. And then, eventually, there will be a good idea, a great idea, and a brilliant idea! Then its just a matter of doing something useful with them! . If your child wants to give up, try and encourage them to write down their bad ideas. Just get them out, all of them, no matter what they are. And then maybe do a brainstorm together. This is a great way to get them to see that coming up with ideas is a process. 07.01.2022 More character cooking! This was definitely one of our most favourite activities! Such a fun one. Heres how: Make Bakable Clay (Salt Dough): 1 cup salt, 2 cups flour, 3/4 cup of water, 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil Mix flour & salt. Add oil, then slowly add water. Mix to a doughy consistency. Add children ... if you dare Knead with hands until smooth & combined. ... Pre-heat the oven to 180C. Make your characters. (We made superheroes!) Then bake! It should take 1-2 hours. But depends on the size and thickness of the creations, so keep checking. Once cooked, let the characters cool, then paint with water-based acrylics. Et Voila! Cooked characters ready to embark on an adventure! Create a story! 04.01.2022 Today our activity was very simple and cathartic. We sorted through my daughters books, that had been spilling off her shelves, and made a big pile of the ones that she had grown out of (and probably werent going to be welcome hand-me-downs by my son). She loved the idea of giving them away. She made a sign and we put them out the front of the house. Throughout the day she kept checking if any had been taken, which generated lots of excitement. By the end of the day there were only a few left! And her shelves are looking MUCH tidier. Win win. . If youre in a high traffic area, you could even ask for a book swap and get others to swap for one of their discarded books. (Just make sure you wipe it down with disinfectant before you take it inside!)

04.01.2022 We made a wishing well! We actually did it couple of weeks ago, but its had pride of place next to the fireplace since, with pencil and paper ready for when wish inspiration strikes and those wishes just need to be made! We used a small bucket (actually our halloween trick or treat one!), cardboard, paddle pop sticks, double-sided tape (but a glue gun would probably be better!), string, and a section from a rice cracker packet for the wish bucket. The wishing bucket i...s held onto the roof by a pencil that we sharpened at both ends and stuck through the cardboard. This way the bucket can be wound up and down to collect wishes and deliver them into the well. When were out weve even been saving any coins we find to throw into our wishing well. . This is great inspiration for a story starter ... imagine what would happen if you fell into your wishing well? Where would you end up? Is there a magical land at the bottom?
