25.01.2022 Determined that the show would go on for last year's musical "Cindy", students and staff at St Paul’s Warragul Junior School transformed what would normally be a live show into a movie musical masterpiece. In its very different format, the movie musical was a new adventure and a great opportunity for students to learn about the five main stages of filmmaking that included development, pre-production, production, post-production and distribution. A group of Year 5 students ...became resident ‘recording artists’ rehearsing all of the songs and then laying down the tracks to be used for each of the songs. Meanwhile, the Year 6 main cast members were busy learning all their lines, the backstage crew put in hours of work to design sets for each of the scenes and students in other classes learnt their choreography in preparation for the filming of their ‘class songs’. Having performed musicals live on stage in past years, students have learnt about the differences and advantages of filming scenes and songs compared to performing live on stage. The musical was comprised of two shows that allowed Year 6 students the chance to have a main speaking role. The St Paul’s teachers themselves filmed, edited and pieced together multiple shots to create two films of vibrant, inclusive musical numbers of great sound quality as a result of having the songs pre-recorded. The videos were premiered to the Year 6 students during their Graduation Dinner and Musical Premiere evening. The students dressed up and walked the red carpet which made the evening that little more special for them. In normal times, the Junior School musical is held at the West Gippsland Arts Centre in front of families and members of the community and includes every student in the St Paul’s Junior School. Although it is disappointing that the musical could not be viewed live this year, families were able to view the final video of Cindy and see their children’s Performing Arts endeavours come to life on the screen.

23.01.2022 Some lovely words from one of our Prefects Tip :)

22.01.2022 To help brighten the spirits of students during remote learning, two teachers at St Pauls Warragul Junior School have approached their everyday remote class time a little differently, adding a theme for general language and communications to the mix. They have taken on the role of Wildlife Warriors, with the pseudonyms of Ranger Rap and Ranger Kooloos. The idea behind the role-playing is to encourage the students to interact more and discuss their ideas and thoughts about t...he wildlife, sparking their imaginations. Each morning message from the rangers provides additional activities and tasks such as animal riddles for the students to solve and clues for the students to research and solve to discover various animals. All of this is in addition to general class time curriculum, but it does tie in with the unit the students are studying on Animal and Plant Adaptations. See more

21.01.2022 Due to this second round of remote learning the opportunity for the Warragul Junior School to perform their annual Musical at the Arts Centre was not a possibility. So the Performing Arts teachers decided to make the musical into a movie this year. One of the biggest hurdles is that singing in big groups is not allowed at the moment so to get around this, they decided to focus in on the art of lip syncing, which is of course how things are done in movie musicals anyway. As a part of the remote learning program the students have been rehearsing at home and completing some fun lip sync challenges. Please enjoy a snapshot of some of the staff joining in the fun with the childrens rehearsals :)

18.01.2022 Restrictions due to COVID-19 certainly changed the lives of everyone in today's world, including young athletes with hopes and dreams to take their sport to the... next level. The Elite Sports Performers (ESP) Program at St Paul's assisted their 50 ESP students by providing inspirational videos from Olympic and professional athletes and coaches to help motivate them to continue balancing training regimes with their schoolwork and family time. The possibility that motivation levels of students could decline as the length of the lockdown progressed was the driving force behind Scott Armour (Coordinator of the ESP Program) and his ESP team for reaching out to some of Australia’s leading athletes and coaches for assistance. Scott said Without access to the students I wanted a way to get brief messages of support and encouragement to our young athletes. In the first lockdown, the videos focused on getting athletes to show how they had adapted their training to home-based sessions during the lockdown. In the second lockdown, we centred the videos around strategies to get the ESP student athletes to remain positive and focus on their training. Former Olympians, elite athletes, Australian coaches and industry professionals recorded videos just for the students about how they are moving forward with their training despite the pandemic putting a hold on their sport. They also provided valuable tips and advice to help the students be mentally and physically prepared to step straight back into their sport when it returns. Some of the Australian athletes, coaches and industry leaders included: Dean Vickerman, Melbourne United Head Coach and St Paul’s Alumnus Mark Knowles, former Olympic hockey player and Commonwealth Games flag bearer Anabelle Smith, Olympic bronze medallist and Australian diving team member Brenton Jones, professional cyclist (London) and St Paul’s Alumnus Bronwyn Knox, triple Olympian and Australian water polo team member Alex Gummer, professional soccer player (Switzerland) and St Paul's Alumna Kate Smyth, Australian Commonwealth marathon runner Harry McKay and Fraser Phillips, Carlton footballers and St Paul’s ESP graduates Sarah Rowe, Gaelic footballer (Ireland) and Collingwood AFLW player Ben McKay (North Melbourne Football Club) and Taylah Giliam (WNBL player), former St Paul's ESP students Millie Bongiorno, Australian alpine snowboarder Aoife and Maeve Coughlan, national judo and former St Paul's ESP students Hannah Macdougall, elite para-cyclist and former Paralympic swimmer Jamie Macmillan, North Melbourne Football Club Laura Hingston, VIS athlete and member of the Australian diving team Nathan Brown, St Kilda footballer Ashleigh Brennan, two-time Olympic Gymnast and Commonwealth Gold Medallist Maddie Garrick, Co-captain for the Deakin Melbourne Boomers’ WNBL team Caitlin Parker, Australian boxing champion

Well done girls!

Her Mum wanted to pass on this message "Thank you to all of the wonderful staff who are being so supportive of the Year 12 students during such a challenging year."

12.01.2022 With our Year 6 students almost at the end of their Primary School years and getting ready to take the step into Year 7 at Secondary School we have asked a few of them about some of their favourite times in Junior School. STEPHANIE MCCRACKEN Stephanie started at St Paul’s in three-year-old kinder and has been involved in musicals, concerts, public speaking and the 2019 Tournament of Minds STEM team. She has enjoyed all the amazing teachers’ and great facilities at the Junio...r School and loves drama, in particular the scenarios they got to mime and recreate this year. She is looking forward to Year 7 at St Paul’s, especially being organised and independent. Outside of school Stephanie likes to play sport, piano and loves to travel. She would like to mention Miss McGrath who taught me to follow my dreams and show the world what is right. Her advice to future Year 6 students is to make the most of the year, work hard in school and be organised.

11.01.2022 Year 6 profile - Angus Cooper Angus started at St Paul’s Traralgon Campus in four-year-old kinder and has been involved in the St Paul’s basketball team, plays saxophone and is the House Leader for Gold House. He has enjoyed the small classes at St Paul’s and "all of the teachers, There is just a special feeling with the community at St Paul's in Traralgon, I think".... He is looking forward to Year 7 at St Paul’s, in particular "all the electives, meeting new students, still being able to go over to the Junior School and see my siblings sometimes and finally having my own locker". Some of his most fond memories of the Junior School are "when Mr McNabb used to spray us with water on hot days, the sausage sizzle at the wetlands in 2017 and being the first Year 5 class to go to Canberra. I also liked all of the activities and especially the camps we went on like Forest Edge, Camp Rumbug, Sovereign Hill and Urban Camp. And before all of that, the Year 2 sleepover". Outside of school Angus likes to ride motorbikes, play AFL, basketball, go camping, read books and watch movies. He would like to mention Miss Olivier and Mr Battista as two teachers who have particularly inspired him. His advice to future Year 6 students is, "well to be honest there is not much advice I can give because we have missed out on so much this year, but I would say take every opportunity you have".

10.01.2022 Just before students returned to remote learning, Year 3 students at our Traralgon Campus had lots of fun taking part in a series of STEM challenges. The students experimented with a variety of everyday resources such as cups, cubes, paddle pop sticks, straws, pegs and cardboard strips to complete the challenges. Some of the challenges included building the tallest the structure, building a structure with one cube as the base, and make something stand out in an impressive way. The challenges, although fun, were designed to show students some of the key skills and traits they need in order to successfully engage in STEM learning experiences such as being resilient, persistent, creative and reflective.

06.01.2022 Despite returning to remote teaching and learning, St Pauls recently ensured that the all-important Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews were still able to take place. Our two Seconday Campuses held their interviews via Zoom calls with each family from Years 7 to 12, the teaching staff held the interviews just as they would face to face. Head of Warragul Secondary School, Ms Laura Butterworth said We loved connecting face to face with our parent body and sharing their child...s progress with them. We also shared stories and some laughter which was the perfect way to spend an evening. All of our lessons are continuing live through our Learning Management System, MyStPauls, so our students continue to learn from every corner of Gippsland and beyond. We are thankful to all of our wonderful families for joining us online. Being provided with a convenient, efficient and informative avenue to discuss their childs progress, families were very happy to still have a connection with their childrens teachers. The Stayner family who took part in the interviews with their Year 8 son, AJ said Feeling very privileged to have been able to meet with AJs teachers tonight. Such a lovely experience to see everyone face-to-face and touch base with how the year has been going. Thanks to the teachers for making online learning such a great experience. Well done to all teachers who were involved in continuing to offer this all-important interaction of interviews with families on top of their hard work and dedication to continue providing their quality education online to students during remote learning.

06.01.2022 What a perfect day the Traralgon Junior School Years 3 and 4 students had for their wetlands experience last week. To provide students with an opportunity to engage in outdoor learning experiences the teachers came together to create a wetland experience for their students which was full of team building and environmental learning activities.

06.01.2022 In a fitting tribute, this year the St Paul's Alumni Association acknowledges the work of many of our members as they worked and served their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. They are our helpers and we are proud to call them our own. Infectious Diseases Nurse at Royal Melbourne Hospital - Rosie Dickison (Class of 2008) What is the most challenging element of working through this pandemic?... Working in a COVID-19 ward through this pandemic challenged me in many ways. I had a career change into nursing less than two years ago, so I am in many ways still a baby nurse, but I found myself in a very confronting situation. We were often with people in their last moments instead of their loved ones, which is not an experience I could relate to any other. When you spend every shift in full PPE, setting up video calls so people can say goodbye to their family or holding their hands, you really just want to go home and hug your own family! So with restrictions easing, I am now looking forward to heading home to Moe for a visit. What is your greatest reward during this time? I would have to say the silver lining has been the pride I have found in myself and my colleagues in health care. Nurses have received a lot of recognition through this pandemic and it really made a big difference to morale. I have gotten to work with a lot of excellent people and the shared experience of COVID-19 nursing is something that

06.01.2022 TEACHER PROFILE - MATT SHEARING Matt has been teaching at St Pauls since the beginning of 2019 and is both a Mathematics teacher and Head of Year 7 at the Warragul Campus. Before coming to St Pauls, Matt completed a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Secondary Teaching at Monash University, Clayton. While Matt was studying, he led STEM expeditions that took Australian students to the United States of America to visit NASAs Johnson Space Centre in Houston and Google He...adquarters in San Francisco. Matt is a St Pauls Alumnus (Class of 2007) and has great memories as a student of the many sporting opportunities, particularly representing the school in soccer, cross country, cricket, gymnastics and athletics. He was a member of Gilmore House and points out that The most consistent highlight of every year though was Mr Ken Wilsons ANZAC day speeches. We asked Matt some questions about his teaching What made you come back to St Pauls to teach? This is a hard question for me to answer without sounding incredibly biased. I wanted to come back and teach at St Pauls because I think we are the best. We have amazing resources, amazing staff, and most importantly, amazing students. What is special about Year 7 at St Pauls? I think Year 7 at St Pauls exposes students to a wide range of experiences through our elective program as well as our clubs and societies. It gives everyone the opportunity to try a little bit of everything and helps them discover what they are passionate about. What subjects are you most passionate about and why? Mathematics was always my favourite subject as a student and that is still true as a teacher. I love the challenge of the problems and it is always satisfying finding a solution to a tricky question. The Head of Secondary School at Warragul, Ms Laura Butterworth said Matthew is a well-loved member of the teaching staff here at St Pauls. From Year 7 through to Year 12 he inspires our students to not only enjoy Mathematics, but to thrive in the classroom. He is always searching for innovative teaching strategies which engage his learners and develop their confidence. In his role as the Head of Year 7 he is welcoming, nurturing and fun and quickly establishes a rapport with our Year 7 students when they arrive. As an Alumnus of our school we are thrilled to have Matthew as both a teacher and a leader of our community. While Matt can often be found playing table tennis with the Year 7 students at recess or lunch, outside of work Matt loves to play soccer which he has been playing since he was eight years old. Its a great way of keeping up with mates and staying fit. When we asked Matt about something that his peers and students may not know about him he told us that he once had a 38 hour long birthday. He flew from Melbourne > Sydney > Los Angeles > Houston > Huntsville AL, leaving Melbourne around 7:00 am and arriving at his hotel in Huntsville around 6:00 pm, about 25 hours later!

The students have been attending scheduled remote rehearsal meetings in their sectional groups of strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, voices and piano duet, both with students from their campus and collectively on a cross-campus basis. A large ensemble focus in Terms 1 and 2 saw Academy musicians working in a combined orchestral and choral setting across t...he School; while a small ensemble focus for Terms 3 and 4 is currently seeing students preparing their parts for chamber projects within their orchestral, vocal and keyboard sections. Earlier this year, the students were lucky to experience their first Sitzprobe before the pandemic restrictions a full orchestral and choral rehearsal with students from both the Warragul and Traralgon Campuses. The St Pauls Academy of Music is open to students by audition and offers a dedicated focus through timetabled classes for the development of students chamber and orchestral skills. With professionally delivered instrumental and vocal workshops in addition to combined, cross-campus orchestral and choral rehearsals, Academy students will have opportunities to perform at a range of venues.

03.01.2022 Warragul Campus Year 8 Japanese students recently had an amazing virtual experience linking with the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum where they listened via video conference to a presentation from Keiko Ogura, an actual survivor of the atomic bomb blast that was dropped on Hiroshima. This year was the 75th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing and Ogura san was only eight years old when it occurred. Ogura san captivated the students with her inspiring story of survival. Ogur...a san also shared how she is an advocate for world peace and encouraged the students to act on this message. This was a unique experience to have an actual survivor speak to the students and share her memories of that time. Ogura san became an official A-bomb survivor of the Hiroshima Peace Cultural Foundation in 2011. In 2013 she received the Hiroshima Peace Center Foundations 25th Kiyoshi Tanimoto Peace prize. The presentation links in with the Culture Unit the Year 8 students are studying and the students will also write letters to Ogura san that will be sent to Japan.

Supported by Landcare, the event was the beginning of the schools intent to build a frog bog and a bee habitat to further develop the grounds of the campus into a sustainable green environment that will enable ongoing hands-on education in the new environmental space. It was also in r...ecognition of National Tree Planting Day which was officially held on August 2.
